    Family weekend

    We were a family group of 18 - ages ranging from 6 to 83. The house was large enough to all comfortably sit down to eat - something I think is very important. We all were able to sit in the large lounge in the evenings to play games. The games room was an added bonus. The kitchen is large and sociable and well equipped. The bedrooms were large and the beds comfy. The weather was against us but having so much space we were happy to stay put. If it had been sunny there is a large garden with table and chairs. Woodlands is an excellent company to deal with and I would have no hesitation in recommending them and the property we stayed in.

    Excellent stay for my hen do

    We recently stayed at Portman house for my hen do and were so delighted. The property is vast and situated in stunning grounds. We kept remarking on how it felt like we were in Italy! There were 17 of us staying and it didn't feel crowded at any point. The beds were comfortable and the house had all the amenities we required (Apart from fans during a heatwave - much the same as a lot of people and I'm sure that will change). There is a bar, Karaoke and cinema room in the basement which was incredibly cool (a must in the heatwave!) and a real added bonus to our weekend. I couldn't recommend The Portman and Woodlands Retreats as a company more. You will not be dissapointed should you chose to stay with them and we can't wait to return at some point!

    Lovely break away with mum friends

    We stayed as a group of 10 mum friends on a mini-break together for a rest and a chance to catch up with one another. The house was fantastic. Plenty of space for all of us and we especially enjoyed sitting outside in the sunshine chatting, visiting local towns and restaurants and relaxing in the house. We hired a caterer on one evening which went really well too. The house is beautifully presented and very comfortable. The only reason I put a 4 for condition was because some of our party commented on the slightly incongruous art choices.

    Five night family stay

    Portman House gave our family one of the most memorable five‑night breaks we’ve ever had. Nine of us and two dogs settled in instantly — the house wraps around you with comfort and grandeur. The views over the Pylle countryside are breathtaking, the lounge and bedrooms are pure luxury, and the cellar bar and hot tub made every evening feel special. We hosted a regimental‑style dinner with a fine‑dining chef and a Highland piper, and the house rose to the occasion magnificently. Perfect weather meant we spent hours outside soaking in the surroundings. We even wandered to the local church and discovered the resting places of the Portman family, which added a lovely historical thread to the stay. Leaving was genuinely difficult — five nights didn’t feel long enough. The only disappointment was the kitchen. It needs a deep clean: juvenile flies, food debris under the cooker, and remnants from previous guests. We cleaned far more than expected, especially before the caterers arrived (who even remarked they’d never seen it that clean before). It didn’t spoil our stay, but Portman House deserves a kitchen as immaculate as the rest of the property. Everything else was exceptional, and we would absolutely return.

    Wonderful and blissful weekend

    We arrived to find the most beautiful and comfortable property, set in glorious countryside with every amenity one could ask for. Portman House could not have been a more perfect venue for a happy, fun-filled, relaxing and perfect Hen Weekend. Just exactly right!
