To the north, Hadrian’s Wall can be reached within an hour’s drive and offers a more historic trail for walkers to take. The Derwent Valley Railway Path leads east towards the outskirts of Durham and is very popular with cyclists, whilst the Waskerley Way leads west and on into the vast open spaces of Weardale. For guests wanting to enjoy a spot of history and culture, the cathedral city of Durham offers plenty of attractions to enjoy at all times of year. Also of interest nearby is Hexham’s abbey, or the open-air Beamish Museum. For lovers of retail therapy, Newcastle upon Tyne, Gateshead and the Metrocentre are a short drive away. For food and drink you will be spoilt for choice. The nearby village of Lanchester offers a good variety of places to eat, including village pubs, an Italian restaurant, Greek restaurant and a couple of takeaways. The Knitsley Farm Shop is a little over an enjoyable 2 mile walk. It has a fabulous selection of home produce and locally sourced food and drink. The town of Consett is perfect for supermarket shopping and has a variety of shops, cafés, pubs and restaurants. There is an indoor sports centre, swimming baths, cinema and theatre, and outdoor markets held on a Thursday and Friday. Situated off a country lane, this bungalow was lovely and quiet. It was small but well-appointed, very clean, and is an ideal spot to get away from it all.Would definitely recommend as a crash-out break.
