The Hobogîte: 4-Star Stone Cottage, EXCLUSIVE use Heated Pool & Acre of Gardens
Welcome to the Old Stone “Hobogîte” - A Quiet Rural Getaway for two - Free WiFi - EXCLUSIVE use of brand new 30 sq.m. Pool and an acre of Gardens...
While our lovely Charentais barn was being renovated, we often camped out in an old stone outhouse - our daughter affectionately christened this the Hobo house, and the name has stuck. It was so nice in this friendly little cottage that we decided to convert it, and rent it out as a gîte - but only when there's no-one in the barn. This is how you will have the whole acre of gardens - and the pool (from May to September) - entirely to yourselves. We are proud to have been awarded the prestigious 4-Star accolade by Charentes Tourisme under the 'Meublés de Tourisme" scheme.
This is a true get-away-from-it-all escape; if you see 3 cars a day passing on the small road at the end of the drive, you should feel honoured! You are however just 5km away from the N10 motorway, and 6km from the local town of Ruffec and the Charente River - for swimming, canoeing, fine dining, or simply sitting and enjoying it all.
As you will see from the pictures, we have carried out the conversion sympathetically, to a very high standard, providing everything we think is important; a local oak dining table, a dishwasher, Denby bone china, sharp knives, two types of corkscrew, a huge flat-screen TV with 5.1 cinema surround-sound & lots of good DVDs, a large firm and especially comfortable bed, a multi-jet “shower pod” like something out of Star Trek... and outside, a vast north-facing shady hangar with a large ceiling fan for those hot summer lunches, a choice of two barbecues and of course outdoor ping-pong, all sheltered from both sun and rain.
Free Wi-Fi is provided throughout. Even down by the pool, so you can do a little casual surfing as you relax under a parasol on the comfortable pillows of the hardwood sun-loungers. Or in a deckchair under the small plantation of mature pine trees which provide a pretty spot to relax with a book in pine-scented shade. Not forgetting a cooling shower in the huge "walk-around" shower in the wet-room of the Pool House, converted from what is probably the finest stone-built chicken coop west of the Charente!
After your lunch in the cool of the shaded hangar, another swim, and a 6km cycle-ride or drive into Ruffec, to the twice-weekly market or the spanking new branch of E.Leclerc, for vital supplies, you'll be ready for an extremely leisurely al-fresco apéritif and barbecue. Remember, here in the wonderful summer micro-climate of the Charente, it stays warm until 2am...
And so to bed ... in that very comfortable bed ... in the old stone “hobogîte” ...

Rob & Lene, decided to buy a holiday home in the Charente as we entered our 5th decade 10 years ago. While our lovely Charentaise barn was being renovated, we often camped out in an old stone outhouse. Our daughter affectionately christened this the Hobo House, and the name stuck. It was so nice in the "Hobo House" that we decided to convert it and rent it out, but only when there’s no-one in the barn. Why they chose this property
Our rural retreat is on the edge of a tiny hamlet; if we see 3 cars a day passing the road at the end of our drive, we feel honoured! We are however just 5km away from the N10 motorway, and our local town of Ruffec.
We are proud to say that we have our very own 'USP' (Unique Selling Point) - we only rent out the gite when we are not using our converted barn, so you have sole use of the pool and of course of the whole acre of gardens, laid mostly to lawn and gravel terraces, with a small plantation of mature pine trees providing welcome summer shade.

What makes this property unique
We wanted to go for our holidays somewhere far enough south to get proper hot summer weather, but not so far that it was more than an easy day's drive. The Hobogite is just 400 miles from Calais, on motorways which have very little traffic - even in the summer, as they don't head either towards or away from Paris.
This is a quiet rural location where you can really lose yourself, far away from the usual hurly-burly. The Charente has a wonderful micro-climate which provides lots of sun, and very few overcast or cloudy days; it apparently has the most sunshine of any area in France away from the Mediterranean.
