Adults and children will enjoy the rockpools at both ends of the bay when the tide is out, rest on one of the many seats and look out at the only East Coast offshore statue "The Couple" facing out to sea. Newbiggin Lifeboat and Rocket House are one of the oldest in England and you can pop into the RNLI on a Sunday morning and chat to the friendly crew who practice most Sundays. At the far end of the bay is the Maritime Centre with large Glass windows with a lovely cafe, gift shop and Lifeboat Museum. Set in the centre by the band stand is a lovely Italian ice cream parlour belonging to the same family for years. The cliff top golf course has lovely views and a good cafe on site.
Newbiggin was once a thriving fishing village and some coble boats still fish every day. Nearby there are plenty of Supermarkets and shops and the historic market town of Morpeth is only 8 miles with a lovely Edwardian arcade to explore and some super bars and restaurants to try. From Dolphin Cottage, the heritage coast is easily reached where you can drive up through villages and all the way onto Holy Island should you wish, even Berwick upon Tweed is only 53 miles should you wish to visit the Scottish Borders on your holiday. Hadrian’s Wall is less than an hour away where you can walk some of the wall or see a Roman Fort.
The Northumberland National Park is a lovely day out with miles of rugged moors and forests head over to Kielder and make a day of it. Alnwick Castle is only 25 miles away where you can explore the home of the Duke of Northumberland and see the castle where some of Downton Abbey and Harry Potter was filmed. South of Dolphin Cottage and only 13 miles away is Whitley Bay with a wonderful promenade leading onto Tynemouth with miles of beaches, cafes, and a wonderful place to spend the day. After a day out you can relax in the rear enclosed yard or sit out the front or wander round to one of the benches and look out to sea, watching the activities down in the bay.
