About the host
Hosted by Simon Retallack
My wife and I bought this house in 2015 and transformed it into a light, modern, sustainable and comfortable home. After living in London for 20 years, not one day goes by when we regret moving here - we love the space, the peace and having nature on our doorstep.
Why they chose this property
The house is set in the village of Farringdon, which has quiet, charming streets of thatched houses, a Norman-era church including 2,000-year old yew trees in the church-yard and two pubs - the Rose and Crown and the Golden Pheasant. It is the starting point for several beautiful walks to neighbouring villages, including Chawton where Jane Austen lived and wrote several of her most famous novels. The Jane Austen House and Chawton House (which was owned by her brother) can both be visited. Winchester, once the Saxon capital of England, is just half an hour away by car and the beaches of West Wittering, East Head and Hayling Island are all within an hour's drive, as is the New Forest.
What makes this property unique
Set on the edge of the beautiful, ancient village of Farringdon in north-east Hampshire, the house was completely modernised and extended in 2020 and 2022 is the first year it has been made available for holiday rental.
Downstairs, it offers a large open-plan kitchen-dining space, a smart sitting room, an informal snug (complete with piano), a utility/coat/boot room, a pantry and a downstairs loo. Upstairs, guests will have access to a master bedroom with super-king-size bed, spectacular views, an en-suite bathroom and dressing room; a second bedroom with king-size bed; a third bedroom with two single beds and a family bathroom.
Guests will have access to books, board games, DVDs, 3 TVs and an outdoor ping pong table.
Outside the garden is well-tended, with lawns, flower beds and mature trees. It also has a patio with an outside dining table and chairs. The house overlooks fields and distant wooded hills.
If you are after peace and tranquillity, in comfort and style, this is the place!
