Neidpath Barmkin sits within the curtilage wall of Neidpath, and once housed the kitchens for the great castle. The large living room has an open log fire, TV and wonderful views over the river. The property is all on one floor with a Kingsize fourposter with ensuite shower room, a Twin zip & link Room and Double Boxed Bedroom plus a family bathroom and family shower room. The eat-in kitchen is well equipped and there is garden space front and back with table and chairs, as well as a lockable shed with bike rack and outside tap. The historic and lively town of Peebles is a 10 minute walk away.

A gem
The Barmkin has a wonderful location within the grounds of the castle and a garden overlooking the river - a real sun-trap. There was a generous welcome pack of fruit, bread, milk, tea and coffee and the kitchen was well-equipped. There is a steep path down to the river and it's a pleasant 1km walk into town.
We were there for a cycling holiday and there are several spectacular routes on very quiet roads. The Tweed Vallet Trail is traffic-free.
I would thoroughly recommend The Barmkin for a place to stay.

We had an absolutely amazing stay at Neidpath Castle for a special family birthday. My husband and I stayed in Queen Marys Chamber in the castle and our children stayed in Neidpath Barmkin cottage.
Our stay was perfect from start to finish. We had the whole castle to ourselves and loved exploring from down in the pit dungeon all the way up to the castle ramparts with it's beautiful views along the River Tweed.
Sandy was so helpful and made our stay extra special. She arranged an amazing private dining experience for us in the castles beautiful tapestry room in front of a roaring fire. Private chefs Dougie and Christine provided us with an incredible meal made with beautiful local ingredients. A truly memorable meal in.
Staying in Queen Mary's Chamber with it's super comfortable four posted bed and extra deep roll top bath and our own private suite with open fire was a very special experience.
Our children loved staying in Neidpath Barmkin cottage with it's super comfortable bedrooms and beautiful lounge with open fire. A cottage with a very special atmosphere.
Our stay at Neidpath Castle was a truly unique and exceptional experience. A very special weekend that we'll be talking about for a very long time.

Fabulous place
A beautiful cottage with everything you could possibly need in an amazing location.
The only reason for the comfort medium rating is that we chose to stay despite having no power due to the worst storm for 100 years! - had that not been the case, the comfort rating would be excellent
The owners gave us other options but we decided to stay and they were very helpful with candles and logs - it was all part of the adventure!

Perfect
The location was ideal—nestled in nature and history, yet just a short walk or drive into Peebles. We had a guest with limited mobility, and the place was wonderfully accessible. The rooms were beautiful and cozy, making the stay absolutely perfect.

Perfect stay for our family
The Barmkin is an idyllic set up for any wedding guests that you may want on the Neidpath property! Both sets of our parents had their own quarters of the cottage including their own bedrooms and bathrooms. The shared kitchen and living room were spacious and stocked with everything one would need for morning breakfast. The Neidpath crew made sure that dietary needs were adhered to with attention to detail. Outside the cottage you will find the castle at the front and River Tweed behind the cottage. The men got ready in the Barmkin on the morning of our wedding, which made the extra bedroom and bathroom a plus! I can’t recommend this property enough!

A unique and fabulous place to stay. We try to come at least every 2 years
A gorgeous cottage that we started coming to when my daughter was a toddler. She’s now 19, and we still love it. In a fantastic location that can’t be beaten, and within walking distance of Peebles it’s perfect. The cottage is beautiful, well equipped and comfortable. We will be back next year - just wish we could stay longer than 5 nights!

Unique and atmospheric cottage in the grounds of Neidpath Castle with lovely views over the River
We absolutely loved our time at Neidpath Barmkin. A truly unique and memorable experience. Wonderfully comfortable lounge with great open fire. It was so peaceful at night and the bed was so comfortable. Great rainforest shower and bath too. Everything we needed in the kitchen and a outbuilding with washing facilities and perfect for bike storage. Great walks and mountainbiking from the house. A really beautiful location with fantastic views over the Tweed and woodlands. Rachel and team couldn't have been more helpful with booking and queries. Thank you so much!

Christmas in Scotland
Amazing. Wonderful. Enchanting. We had a family Christmas gathering and it did not disappoint. There was even a decorated tree waiting for us. The weather outside was actually frightful but we built a fire and loved the time together. They even delivered more firewood on Christmas morning!

A charming cottage in the grounds of a castle!
This cottage was accommodation for our wedding party, but I would recommend it to anybody looking for a stay in somewhere special. The cottage sleeps 6, with a beautiful interior and a welcoming open fire. With stunning riverside walks on your doorstep and a stones thrown from village pubs and restaurants, it's a must stay for anybody visiting peebles!

Perfect
Very beautiful inside, loved the view’s across the Tweed to the trees on the hillside. The communication informing us of cottage key’s location etc excellent. The food in the fridge was satisfactory. The layout of the cottage was clean, tidy, not cluttered and sufficient room for guests staying there. Thoroughly enjoyed it.

Overlooking the Tweed and a short walk to Peebles, what more can you want?
Lovely stay in the Barmkin. It’s very comfortable with a lovely spacious sitting room overlooking the Tweed. Fabulous log fire and roomy kitchen. The two bedrooms are very nice at each end of the cottage, but the bunk room is definitely for children only. Fabulous location and we walked into Peebles very easily along the river and back again. The Team at Neidpath provided us with fresh bread. Biscuits, milk, eggs and tea/coffee/sugar/loo paper/washing up liquid were all provided which was a real bonus!

As beautiful as always
This was our 3rd stay here and was a welcoming as always . The accommodation is a rustic shabby chic and feels like it gives you a big hug when you walk in . The walks and views are breathtaking and amazing from the top of the castle. Always enjoyed my stay and feel totally recharged on departure.

Can’t beat the location
It’s perfect for what we needed at the wedding. We had somewhere for the older guests to relax and for the younger kids to sleep without losing anyone for hours at a time. As a place to stay its brilliant and can’t be beaten.

Great place
We loved the Barmkin - plenty of room for all of us (only downside was one room is bunk beds which would be great for kids but not adults or babies!)
Good kitchen, plenty of crockery for visiting eaters, fabulous living room with plenty of wood for the fire. We really enjoyed it and hope to come back. Peebles is great and the walks along the river, especially in autumn, were just lovely.

About the host
Hosted by Lulu Benson
Neidpath Castle has been passed down through the centuries since the 1100s, when it was first built by the Frasers. Most recently, it was inherited by the Wemyss family in 1810 and is still owned by a branch of that family today.
Why they chose this property
The property was passed down the generations to the present owners.
What makes this property unique
Neidpath Barmkin, is uniquely situated high above the great River Tweed, in the walls of the ancient castle, first built in the 1100s. The Barmkin provides light filled, peaceful accommodation, with comfortable beds, including a luxurious four poster, and a cosy open log fire. Nearby Peebles, has a host of delightful shops and museums as well as a theatre/cinema. Day trips to Edinburgh, by bus, are one of the best ways to enjoy the capital whilst staying in rural peace.
