About this property
Bagenal Harvey & Boxwell Cottages
Historic relaxing cottages near the coast
Bagenal Harvey and Boxwell cottages are on a heritage site, flanking a superb 1500s castle (Tower House). Butlerstown has been in the ownership of the same family for many generations, and it has been the wish of the current owners for many years that its beauty and tranquility should be made more available to the public. Set in 100 acre farm and woodland, in the sunniest corner of Ireland, we are just 10 mins drive from the closest good beach. The castle cottages have their own private Herb Garden and Lavender Haggard, and there is a small soccer pitch for children to play on. Good local restaurants, pubs (such as Mary Barry's pub/restaurant), riding stables, golf courses, museums and bird heritage sites (such as the Saltee Islands, North Slob and Tacumshin Lake) are all within easy striking distance. Donkeys and other pet animals, and a traditionally run vegetable garden, ancient well and other special features all help to make Butlerstown a unique place.

We came from Dublin and staying in the Country side was just what we needed! It was the experience we wanted. Thank you and thanks to Jim for the tour of the castle so happy we didn’t miss out on that!
14 of us (6 adults and 8 children aged 3 to 9) had a wonderful stay at the cottages over new years. The cottages oozed character and the bedrooms were very comfortable. There was so much to explore for the kids. Anna was a very friendly and courteous host. Would definitely stay again.
We had booked Anna and Jim’s cottages for our party of 10 to enjoy our first trip to Ireland. Anna and Jim are wonderful hosts who made sure we had everything we needed. The cottages are comfortable, charming and unique, set in a fairly remote location, so a car is a must. Our youngest daughter enjoyed counting the lambs and feeding the resident donkeys and we were given a fascinating tour of the castle by Jim. We used the cottages as a base to explore the stunning beaches within 10-15 minutes drive, and to go further afield to explore the historic towns of Waterford, Wexford and Kilkenny. A trip to the local pub The Hideout also comes highly recommended - the landlady is very welcoming and it is an easy 1 mile walk down extremely quiet roads.
We loved the cottages and setting. There was plenty of space for the 11 of us inside and out. The children loved the outdoor space and feeding the donkeys, chicken and sheep. The hosts were very welcoming and the tour of the castle was a great adventure!
Our stay was more than we could have anticipated! The cottages were lovely and cozy.
The property was exceptional, with beautiful gardens and sweet animals. Anna and Jim were wonderful hosts and we loved everything about our tower tour with Jim.
Rented the Butlerstown Castle for family birthday celebration. Hosts really went all out. Prepared a cake for me. Gave fantastic historical tours which were enjoyed. They made us feel at home. I highly recommend. Would make a great corporate retreat venue.
located in a beatiful farm house wiht old castle & tower, with wonderful garden.
The cottage have been furnished traditionally , to maintain a nice and cozy.
the owners are lovely.
We had a wonderful stay here. Cottages are lovely and the gardens are beautiful. Lots of open sapce and donkeys to feed! Anna, Jim and Jack were so nice and helpful. Would definitely recommend a tour of the tour with Jim. He is very knowledgeable and entertaining.
My large family group stayed here for a week. It’s a beautiful, rustic property in rural Ireland filled with well chosen antiques and feels very comfortable. It is close to all that the sunny southeast of Ireland has to offer but also very rural if you just want peace and quite. Our hosts were fantastic and so accommodating to us. They have the gift of Irish hospitality.
We are a family group of 11years to 90 years. Everyone loved the venue, location and general area. The hosts Jim and Anna were so obliging and full of interesting knowledge. We couldn’t say anything negative about our stay.
A special stay - stunning accomodation surrounded by nature.
Otherwordly! If you are looking for something different, quiet and very beautiful, you'll love this place. We enjoyed luxurious accomodation, great outdoor space and privacy, and proximity to an idylic beach & other beauty spots. The children loved feeding the donkeys, and Anna took them off to feed the hens too, and we all loved our private tour of the castle which gave a real sense of what it was like to live there 500 odd years ago. It would also be a super spot for a larger group using the two cottages (which are spacious), and great for self catering.
Our stay at the Cottages was perfect! The cottages were so cute and the beds comfortable. It was clean and well kept and the groups were beautiful. As a bonus, we got a tour from Jim of the castle and his gardens. He took us right to the top and explained everything. We had people ranging from 77 to 10 in our party and everyone in between and they all love this place. We spent the evening playing cards in the yard or sitting on the lawn enjoying the perfect weather. If you want a relaxing taste of the Irish Countryside, this is the place to be! Wish we could have stayed longer.
We booked both of Anna’s Cottages for a family celebration, we were a mixed party of children, teenagers and adults young and not so young and everyone thoroughly enjoyed their stay. The kids had animals to feed and grounds to explore and we’re beyond happy and didn’t want to leave. Jim brought us on an amazing tour of the castle which we all loved. . And it was topped off by a fabulous evening in the main house with delicious food cooked by a neighbour of Anna’s. Everyone of us has vowed to return at a later date.....and yes what they say is true, the beds were soooo comfortable!!! Thank you so much Anna and Jim for a perfect weekend, see you both again soon x

Peaceful, serene, romatic and also a great place for spending time with loved ones and family
We booked both cottages for a family birthday celebration - three generations who all thoroughly enjoyed themselves. The cottages were beautifully restored and well stocked and in the most resplendent surroundings. Whether it’s a romantic break or a family get together this was indeed a most enchanting place in the shadow a fabulous castle - which, by the way, we got a grand tour of by Jim (thanks a million - I still can’t get over the amount of work you put into it - definitely a life-long passion of yours!!). The children loved feeding the animals (just a little bit more than the adults) - thanks Anna. Had the most wonderful weekend and will definitely return. Would recommend it to all. A magical place. Thanks Anna and Jim.
This place is one of a kind! My husband and I got married at Butlerstown, and we also brought our families and a few close friends to stay for a couple days in the run-up to the wedding. We would wholeheartedly recommend it to others who are looking for a similar wedding experience. We will not forget the feeling of being in the countryside with a castle outside our door. We wanted a beautiful, relaxing spot for our wedding weekend, but what we got was far more than that.
We had 16 people in our group, 12 of whom actually stayed onsite, and found that the cottages served our purposes well: we could all just fit into the same room to eat and relax (very few rentals offer this, especially nice ones!). As one would expect, we were a bit on top of each other, food prep and showers required coordination and so on, but it worked.
When it came to the wedding itself, Anna and Jim were phenomenal. They made the planning process easy and went above and beyond to make it a special weekend for us. On Anna’s recommendation we asked her neighbor Susan to cook our wedding dinner (delicious), which we ate in the main house. The presentation, the beautiful details of the house, and the exceedingly warm hospitality made it such an incredible day. You just don’t get this kind of attention and warmth at even the finest hotels and venues. We could not have been happier with our wedding day. Our families will be talking about this for a long time.
And we can second what others have said: the cottages are lovely; the beds are so comfortable; etc. We really enjoyed the castle tour by Jim, who has carried out a lot of the restoration and maintenance. It was a real highlight of a wonderful trip. Can’t recommend this place and our hosts more!
Anna and Jim are amazing!! Our stay at the castle was truly one we will cherish forever. We were a very large group of family friends (6 adults, 6 kids ages 6-11) and there was plenty of space for all to be cozy together or spread out when we wanted. The cottages are beautiful and we had such a wonderful time cooking meals, relaxing by the fireplace, and exploring the grounds. Jim gave us a wonderful tour of the castle- the kids were so amazed and excited. Anna was so sweet and made sure that the kids had time to feed the sheep and donkeys apple core treats. I cannot say enough how special our 5 days at the castle were!
We had a wonderful and inspiring week with grandparents and young children (7 people in total) at boxwell cottage and thoroughly enjoyed it. The beautifully renovated house, the lovely and spacious garden and the warm hospitality of Anna and Jim are amazing!
Great property, great rural location, short stroll to friendly local. Host was excellent, left you to relax and enjoy, yet was always there when needed.
The castle tour is fabulous and don't miss it.
All facilities were excellent.
These characterful, quirky and creaky cottages were great for our family get-together. Plenty of room for 8 adults and 3 children and a baby (cot available on request). Beautiful grounds with donkeys and sheep the children can feed with carrots. The cottages are well equipped with essentials, although no washing machine for longer stays. The surrounding area is beautiful and would recommend Karoo for breakfast or lunch. Correspondence with owner Anna was excellent, although did not meet her during our stay, we only met her husband Jim who was lovely and left us to get on with things. One thing that could be improved on is more showers as there is one for the two cottages and the rest of toilets have baths only. Although this did not spoil our stay at all. If you like modern and minimalist this is not for you. We all loved it and if you're looking for something a bit different you'll love it here.
We stayed at Tomhaggard cottages in April 2022 as a family of 13 in the run-up to my wedding. The scenery of the surrounding area, the rustic charm of the cottages and the fantastic hospitality of Anna and Jim made our stay unforgettable and truly special. Memories of preparing family meals in the well equipped kitchen, sitting around the roaring fire and feeding the donkeys will stay with us for a long time. On top of that, Jim's excellent tour of the castle just was a perfect finish to our stay in Tomhaggard. I can't recommend this place and its hosts enough - beautiful all round!
Can't thank Anna & Jim enough for their hospitality during our weekend stay. Anna was super helpful and also treated the children to donkey & hen-feeding, which they absolutely loved. Jim gave us a truly amazing tour of the castle, which was so informative and appreciated. A beautiful spot to visit - would highly recommend.
We really enjoyed a very nice weekend here; it lent itself to the how we wanted to celebrate a special birthday. Anna and Francoise helped facilitate a private party in the main house which we thoroughly enjoyed. The tour of the castle was very educational, Jim has a great grasp of the history of the place. There was only one drawback that we could have found inconvenient had we wanted to stay longer; this was that, although there are a number of bathrooms, there is only 1 shower available; that aside, we all felt at home in this lovely rural setting.
We were a large family group and booked both cottages. We absolutely loved our stay. The cottages are beautiful, and spacious enough that we could all gather together in one for the evenings. The grounds are fabulous, we loved the castle tour the Anna brought us on, and the kids loved feeding the donkeys. And the location is great with plenty to do close by. We were only sad that we weren't staying longer, but will definitely book again in the future.
