Tigh-na-Sgoile is Scots Gaelic for ‘House by the School’ and is situated beside the old school of Foxhole, a hamlet in the Scottish Highlands near to Beauly, Inverness and mighty Loch Ness. The owners, living next door, have done a tremendous job converting this building into a luxurious, timber-clad holiday home perfect for those wanting to experience the best of the Highlands.
The design makes the most of the surroundings by placing bedrooms on the ground floor and living spaces on the first floor, so you can enjoy views of forest, fields, hills and a mountain. Entering the cottage there’s a spacious hall with the two bedrooms and bathroom off. There’s a twin room with bespoke woodwork headboards and shelving. This twin room has an en-suite shower room. The larger bedroom is versatile, set up as a super kingsize bed, but on request can be made into two single beds. The bathroom is a spacious shower room.
On the first floor there’s a beautiful open plan living space with an amazing amount of light pouring into this room and the balcony has a fantastic aspect out towards the woods. Eyes are drawn from the top of the stairs to the inviting wood burner which the seating is quite rightly orientated around. The dining space with table and four chairs is between the living space and kitchen and perfectly suitable for four adults. The kitchen is well-equipped and beautifully finished.
Foxhole is a rural hamlet which enjoys amazing views across rolling pasture to woodlands and the local Munro Ben Wyvis. The cottage is perfectly placed for those wanting to explore with the Abriachan Forest Trust and Great Glen Way only 2½ miles away. Picturesque Abriachan - well known as the home of Katherine Stewart author of ‘A Croft In The Hills’ and many other books - is just beyond the Great Glen Way and teeters on the edge of hills bordering Loch Ness. The views of the Loch from Abriachan are astounding and you will enjoy venturing up from Foxhole at different times of day to soak up the view. The road down to the loch means that you can be exploring shoreside of the Great Glen in only ten minutes from Tigh-na-Sgoile.
The road beside Loch Ness gives access to Inverness but also Drumnadrochit, Fort Augustus and beyond to the Isle of Skye, Fort William and many other amazing spots. Going the other way, down the hill from the cottage you reach the village of Kiltarlity in 2½ miles and the market town of Beauly in 6 miles. Beyond Beauly the NC500 lures visitors either northeast or north west to explore some of the best places in Scotland. Tigh-na-Sgoile is a superb base from which to explore the north of Scotland from. On the topic of hiking the Munros within easy reach of Tigh-na-Sgoile include Ben Wyvis and those up Glen Strathfarrar and Glen Affric. You can be in Cannich, the gateway to both collections of Munros in twenty minutes.
One or more beds can be linked to form double or twin beds (please advise the owner of your preference soon after booking).
