About this property

Private Beach Home at Water's Edge--Enjoy!

This waterfront home at the water's edge on Hale Passage with 180 degree views, looks at majestic Mt. Baker and at night the beautiful lights of Bellingham Bay.

Views are spectacular. Watching the sun rise is a 'to be remembered' experience as are the full moons rising. As you walk into this home on the beach with hand-split cedar shakes, you see water everywhere. Bedrooms are furnished with American and English
antique furnishings. There is ceramic tile throughout the main floor and radiant heat in some areas. A Jøtul stove provides a special warmth on cool nights.

This private home on the beach is tucked against a hillside with easy access to boating, swimming, and beach combing. It is walking distance from the ferry landing--about 1 mile by beach and 1-1/2 miles by road. A regular sight are the seagulls, herons, kingfishers, eagles, seals, sea otter, and deer. At low tide, you have access to an inviting sandy tide flat with clams and crab, tide pools and beach-rock inhabitants. It is a haven to relax; a great place for families and friends.

A short 10-minute ferry ride takes you to rural Lummi Island--a small wooded Island. Lummi has a population of about 900 which probably doubles or triples in the summer months. Day trips can be made to Vancouver BC, Seattle or Mt Baker. You are 20 minutes from shopping in Bellingham, Lynden, and the Canadian border.

There are ten miles of roads for bikers--mostly following the beaches of the Island. For the beach comber there are many treasures--agates, shells, beach glass. It is a great place to relax and read as well--and to just enjoy the views.

Saturdays feature a Saturday market from June through August. You can purchase fresh produce, pastries, and local artists show their wares. There is one restaurants (the Beach Store Cafe) the Island as well as a general grocery store. Two churches on the Island hold services Sunday mornings--Island Chapel meets at the Lummi Island Grange Hall across the street from the post office and about a block north of the ferry dock.

Lots of room for us to visit comfortably. We did get caught by high tide on our walk & had to scramble up the neighbor's rocks!! Thank you for another great Lummi Island memory!

It was a very relaxing and delightful place to be at. We thoroughly enjoyed ourselves. We kayaked right out front, sunbathed, watched the fishing boats go by and walked along the beach. The house was immaculate and so cozy. The views were amazing.

The house is excellent and the view is gorgeous! The only reason for a ‘good’ rating rather than an ‘excellent’ rating is the steep driveway with little parking and maneuvering room.

This an amazing property. We came with family members, 5 adults and 2 children, and it was a great fit. The east view towards Bellingham and Mt.Baker is unforgettable. There’s a reason they call it Sunrise. We were lucky enough to have a negative low tide and saw starfish and a variety of crabs. Lummi island is a great low key alternative to the more popular San Juan Islands.

Wonderful place.

The sunrises were stunning, so nice to be right on the beach for beach combing. We saw bald engles, otters, seals, and a whale exhaling. Lovely home.

Absolutely gorgeous

Beautiful home with stunning views! The kids had a blast playing on the beach and chasing crabs. My 5 yr old had his birthday there and said it was the best ever! Very comfortable, clean, and relaxing. Hope to come back again! Thank you for letting us stay at your beautiful home!

Amazing Getaway

Views from this comfortable cabin are unparalleled. We had s'mores in the firepit, walked the beach at low tide, admired herons, eagles and deer all on the beach, and enjoyed the cottage garden flowers. Hiked Baker preserve, biked the quiet roads, and even played pickleball at the school. Hosts were very accommodating. Hope to return.

Girls trip

Seeking a laid back girls trip in Bellingham area. Thrilled to find Sunrise cottage available. Amazing location within walking distance to hikes and small store. Great beach combing right outside. Easy to get back to Bellingham on the ferry. Owner communicated the nuances of ferry travel. Vehicle available at property was incredibly useful. If you are looking for a relaxing respite, Sunrise is the perfect place. View of Mt Baker from property was incredible

Beauty everywhere!

Sunrise next to Mt. Baker; Chinook salmon and great blue herons along the shore; songbirds everywhere. I could have stayed a lifetime! The house is super comfortable, with all you need to cook and bake, sit on the deck or below near the beach, and hang out with friends. Louise and Mel are so nice, responsive, and rightfully proud of this place that has been in the family for generations. Thank you for sharing it!

Serenity and amazing views!

Arriving and getting down to the house, we were immediately overcome with the scenery and view. Though Mt Baker was still shrouded in clouds, the Puget Sound, islands, and mainland are all just out in front in a grand expanse. Sleeping at night with waves lapping the shore. Fires on the beach. What more could we ask for! Looking forward to going back. It is a real treasure. The one bed we slept in was very comfortable. The sunrise in the morning was extraordinary!

We had an AWESOMELY relax...

We had an AWESOMELY relaxing time at this neat little tucked away jewel by the water. The views were amazing and even though we picked a blustery time of year to go, we were lulled to sleep by the sounds of the waves crashing ever so sweetly on the shore. The greatest part is we were able to take our dogs along. They are like our children so it was special for us to have them come too. I think we all did a lot of sleeping! Thank you Louise and Mel for sharing this spectacular place with others. It has everything you need for a restful time away from the hubbub of bizzy life. We'll be back! Tom and Tammy

Great family getaway

Clean and comfortable with plenty of space. Gorgeous views, we watched the sunrise every day. We hiked, kayaked and went tide pooling. The minus tide was pretty late (10pm) but we put on our boots and went out and found crabs, star fish and plenty of oyster beds. The boys loved the three otters that swam by and the rope swing on the preserve hike. The kitchen had all the cooking utensils but we didn’t find the sponges until we left (the drawer under the sink pulled open, who knew.). The spice stock was low, but it’s off season so I should have been better prepared. Thank you for a great vacation.

Relaxation, beautiful scenery, and fun family times!

The property is family friendly and has beautiful views. Our first evening we saw orca whales in the sound. The kids saw dolphins (we believe), star fish, and we caught a lot of rock and Dungeness crab. The house was very accommodating. There are three bedrooms. The two upstairs have a joining bathroom. The master bedroom has a huge tub that looks out onto the sound. The kitchen was well equipped for cooking. We loved the outdoor fire pit and the evenings roasting marshmallows. We really enjoyed our Labor Day weekend and we made a lot of fun family memories at this property! Thank you!!

Beach Front Mt. Baker Views

Lovely beach front home with direct access to the rocky, log strewn beach. The home was comfortable and cozy with an electric wood burning stove in the living space. The dining area accommodated 10 for Thanksgiving dinner and the kitchen was large and open. The master bedroom also provided floor to ceiling views of Mt. Baker. The master bathroom has a soaking tub and sink. The toilet is shared by the adjacent bedroom. The shower is in the first floor bathroom which is located off of the living room and must be shared by all three bedrooms. The first floor bedroom also with views of Mt. Baker has a half bath. We didn’t have kids with us so didn’t use the bunk beds on the loft. The front of the house has gorgeous red cedar trees. We parked in the garage (very steep driveway) which was helpful in unloading directly into the house. We loved Lummi Island and it’s was a special relaxing retreat for a long Thanksgiving weekend with family.

PERFECT in every way

Our nine-night stay at Sunrise was perfect for everyone in our group. We had four generations of family from 4 states. The weather was wonderful and the view magnificent. We thought we had the best view on Lummi as we could see Mt. Baker, the ferry, and Bellingham lights at night. We explored the island by foot, bike, and car. We had lunch at the Willows, loved the locally grown farmstands, and enjoyed every minute on the marvelously large deck and evenings around fire pit. The kitchen was equipped with everything we needed for our family. And having the high chair and Pack-n-Play provided was great. For our group and amount of time we were there, the extra large, wonderful refrigerator was a necessity. Don't rely on local store for anything during peak summertime season. Our only regret was that we had no minus tides during our stay. We had hoped to experience the mudflats and sea life that are featured in photos of this great house. Also, our son left a duffel bag behind which Mel delivered to Bellingham the next week. The peaceful experience and view from Sunrise rivals any place on the planet!!

The house had everything we needed, very well appointed with all that you need to cook, relax and enjoy, location was amazing, everything was perfect. Took our Kayaks, easy out in and out. My husband and I retired to our property on Lummi Island. We lived in Sunrise for two years and then moved to a new home built on the Island. We love the Island and its rural quality.

Why they chose this property

My grandmother purchased the property in 1945 and then she and my grandfather built Sunrise. The cedar shakes are hand split from cedar they found on the beach. It has been a family retreat for many years and I am the third generation to own the property.

Our children and now our grandson played on the beach at Sunrise. It is safely away from the road (about 250 feet).

Mel and I bought the property from my parents and aunts and uncles in about 1969. We spent every summer and many weekends at Sunrise throughout the years. Our kids love it and our grandson no longer plays on the beach, but prefers to fish, casting for anything that will bite when he comes.

We started renting Sunrise in 2007 as a vacation rental after we built a new home on the Island. We will never sell this wonderful retreat, but can share it with others as well as family.

This is a special family place and we are been pleased to share it.

What makes this property unique

Sunrise is at the water's edge, away from the road. I love beach combing and walk the beach north to the ferry dock and south to Sunrise Cove whenever possible. Agates, shells, and sea glass our my special finds.

On minus tides there are crab and clams on the tide flat. When our grandson was young, walking the tide flat was a treat as I watched him jump on the horse clam holes and pick up starfish.

We have always been boaters and have enjoyed the ease of getting out on the water. Some of our guests have brought canoes and kayaks. Some have brought smaller outboard boats and rubber rafts.
