About this property
Escape to an Idyllic Countryside Couple's Retreat
Tucked away in the Devon countryside, The Cartshed is a beautifully restored barn offering peace, privacy and breathtaking valley views. Perfect for couples or quiet escapes, this charming retreat features a cosy open-plan living space, wood-burning stove, mezzanine bedroom and a private enclosed garden. Wake to birdsong, enjoy slow mornings with coffee overlooking the fields, and unwind in a setting where nature and tranquillity take centre stage. Sadly no children accepted.
Here at Your Devon Escape we are on hand to assist with any queries or questions.
This countryside retreat offers a lot to explore on the doorstep. There are several local walks to enjoy from the property (don’t forget your wellies). Or if you want to explore further afield, head up to Dartmoor National Park or onto the South West Coast Path.
The local pub is just a couple of miles away in Harbertonford, where you can also find a convenience shop and local fuel garage. The towns of Dartmouth and Salcombe are a twenty-minute drive away. These beautiful coastal towns are the perfect day out; indulge on local seafood and wander the cobbled streets.
Nearby beaches, Slapton Sands and Blackpool Sands, are nine- and ten-mile drive respectively. Much-loved by locals and visitors alike with lifeguards during the summer months and a selection of amenities, they are perfect for a trip to the seaside.
The farm itself is over a thousand years old. At dusk and dawn, keep an eye out for deer in the steep fields and barn owls that occasionally nest in the cider barn. During the summer months, buzzards’ nest in the valley and dozens of swallows that swoop through fields before having a good natter on the telegraph line (we counted sixty-seven on the line last year!)
Originally, The Cartshed was where the horse-drawn carts and machinery were stored. Opposite is the cider barn, which was used to house a very large apple crusher and press to make cider and stable the farm horses. If you’re here in autumn, you’re welcome to help yourself to the apples and blackberries that fall from the trees!

Thoughtfully restored and full of character, this charming barn sleeps up to four guests and is perfectly suited to couples or those seeking a restorative rural break.
Inside, the open-plan living space feels calm and welcoming, flooded with natural light and framed by far-reaching valley views. Comfortable sofas invite you to unwind, while the well-equipped kitchen makes it easy to prepare relaxed meals using local Devon produce (please note: portable oven provided, no microwave). In the cooler months, the wood-burning stove becomes the heart of the home, creating a wonderfully cosy setting for evenings spent reading, chatting, or simply enjoying the stillness.
Up on the mezzanine level, the bedroom features a comfortable double bed and looks out across the living space and the rolling countryside beyond. A sofa bed is also available if required at an additional charge, offering flexible accommodation for additional guests when arranged in advance.
Step outside through the French doors and into your private enclosed garden, a tranquil spot where mornings begin with coffee and countryside views, and evenings end to the sound of birdsong drifting from the nearby woods. The natural pond beside the property, fed by a woodland stream, attracts herons, ducks and the occasional kingfisher, adding to the sense of being truly immersed in nature.
Surrounded by rolling fields, woodland walks and open skies, The Cartshed is a place to reconnect, recharge and enjoy life at a gentler pace. Whether you spend your days exploring the Devon countryside or simply soaking up the peace and quiet, this is a rural retreat designed to leave you feeling refreshed and restored.
The nearest train station is Totnes which is approximately 10 miles away.
Parking:
Private parking for one car.
Children:
Sadly no children accepted to the close proximity of the pond.
Occupancy:
A sofa bed is also available if required at an additional charge.
Please Note:
The Farm has an abundance of natural wildlife, which is what makes this countryside retreat so special. The owners’ birds Kath & Kim the peahens, Rex the chicken (sadly, we lost Camilla to Mr Fox), and Effy the black Pollie dog are all very friendly and will like to say hello, but the owners will do their best to minimise their visits. There are also two new additions to the family, Muffin and Sheeba the rescue cats, both are very shy and like to stay in the farmhouse. The animals are not allowed in The Cartshed to avoid any issues with guests with pet allergies.
Rental Conditions:
Prior to your stay, we require you to complete a pre-arrival form and sign & agree to our rental conditions.
