The Screes - 800 meters from Wastwater - Herdwick Cottages
We are sure The Screes will be a popular property for anyone looking to enjoy some of Britain's most dramatic mountain and lake scenery. This dog-friendly two-bedroom apartment has been fitted out for comfort and ease of use, and couldn't be handier for anyone planning their ascent of England's highest mountain, Scafell Pike.
The open-plan lounge/dining area is a good sociable space and the kitchen is well laid out with modern kitchen units and appliances. It has been known to rain sometimes in this area, so you may be making use of the useful hall area for drying your wet outdoor gear. The bathroom has a good-size walk-in shower and when it's time for bed, you'll find a peaceful haven in either the double, or the twin bedrooms. All the rooms are on ground floor level. When the weather is kind, step outside into the communal garden and marvel at the mountain and lake views. You will be gazing at The Screes (the steep stone-strewn slope running down into Wastwater) after which the property is named, and if you look left, you will see the view of the trio of mountains at the head of Wasdale which was bestowed with the title of Britain's Favourite View back in 2007 (the view hasn't changed since then!).
Whilst you are in a sublime, peaceful location here, you aren't too far from civilisation. It's not too far to drive if you fancy a pub meal, a visit to pretty seaside villages of Ravenglass and St Bees, and the attractions of neighbouring valley Eskdale, such as the Ravenglass and Eskdale narrow gauge railway. The village of Gosforth is a 13 minute drive away and has a bakery, and pubs. Those who visit the Lakes frequently, often miss coming over to this wilder and quieter side of the National Park. Some say, this is the 'connoisseur's Lake District - spectacular, unspoilt, and peaceful, with a landscape that will stay with you forever.
