NEIGHBORHOOD
Moltrasio is a small town on the western branch of Lake Como. Located between Cernobbio and Carate Urio, it’s just a short drive from the city of Como and the Swiss border.
In the center of Moltrasio, you’ll find restaurants, small shops, a little beach, and lakeside villas.
Nearby Cernobbio offers more restaurants and a beach area.
GETTING AROUND
For convenience, we recommend that guests arrive by car. The city of Como is a 15-minute drive away.
Traveling without a car can be more challenging, but it’s still entirely doable. Buses from Moltrasio go to Como and other lakeside towns. Look for lines C10 and C20 operated by ASF Autolinee. The C20 stop is close to the building. Tickets can be purchased from the driver (cash only) or at authorized sales points in the area or in Como (see ASF Autolinee’s website).
Please note that buses do not run frequently and service ends around 10 PM. Taxis are available but not easily accessible in the region.
Ferries regularly depart from the pier at Piazza San Rocco in Moltrasio to nearby towns. Schedules and tickets are available on the Navigazione Laghi website. Tickets can also be purchased at the pier.
From Como, it’s easy to reach Milan and Switzerland (Lugano, Bellinzona, Locarno) by train. Public ferries from the Como city center also connect to other lakeside towns.
The nearest airports are Milan Malpensa, Milan Linate, and Orio al Serio in Bergamo. A direct airport shuttle can be arranged for an additional fee.
For any transportation questions, feel free to contact us—we’re happy to help you get to your favorite destination!
TIPS
We recommend dedicating a day to exploring the charming towns around the lake. Como is the urban center, but the small towns are gems with beautiful lakeside villas.
To travel and walk around Lake Como, especially in smaller towns and the mountains, comfortable shoes are essential.
There are many public drinking water fountains in the area, and the water is safe to drink unless otherwise indicated. Tap water is also drinkable. Bring your refillable water bottle!
If you're looking for an easy hike with lake and mountain views, the Greenway del Lago di Como is a simple and mostly flat trail. It runs through small towns from Colonno to Griante. You can reach Colonno by bus from Moltrasio.
Nature lovers can enjoy the Via Verde, a lakeside and woodland path from Moltrasio to Laglio.
Look for traditional restaurants to taste local cuisine, especially dishes made with fish from Lake Como.
In Italy, many shops (especially small ones) and services close during midday hours, so plan your shopping accordingly.
Lake Como is one of the deepest lakes in Europe and the deepest in Italy. Swimming and diving are prohibited in many areas and can be dangerous. For those who wish to take a dip, there are options: Moltrasio has a small beach. Nearby Lido di Cernobbio offers sunbeds and a swimming pool. In Como, there is an outdoor pool near Villa Olmo, though swimming in the lake is generally discouraged and often prohibited.
There are beaches in other lakeside towns as well. Careno has a small and lovely beach—note that it can get crowded on weekends.
Locals and visitors also enjoy going to Nesso, where adventurous swimmers can jump into the lake from the old Roman bridge near the waterfall.
The Lido di Bellagio and the pebbled beach of San Giovanni await those who want to explore the beautiful town of Bellagio, located at the center of the lake’s two branches.
Lake Como is in a mountainous region. While the surrounding pre-Alps may not seem high, the climate is influenced by the nearby mountains and temperatures can change quickly. Pay close attention to weather conditions when hiking and bring warm, waterproof clothing!
