Cleveden Cottage is a cosy, peaceful and wonderfully characterful detached cottage, steeped in history and tucked away in the quiet village of Newholm, just outside Whitby. Built in 1850, it is the oldest cottage in the village and was once home to Whitby novelist Mary Linskill, who wrote some of her books within its charming walls. Full of period features and timeless appeal, this is a true English country cottage offering a tranquil escape by the coast.

As befits a cottage of this age, Cleveden retains its original character throughout. The staircase is moderately steep with a low ceiling and handrail, adding to the charm of the property – taller guests may need to duck slightly when coming downstairs.

On the ground floor, the cottage welcomes you into a quaint and inviting lounge, where a sofa and armchairs are arranged around an open fire, creating the perfect spot to relax after a day of exploring. A separate dining room features a traditional dining table and chairs beside a wood-burning stove, ideal for long, leisurely meals together. The kitchen is a good size and well equipped for preparing family meals, and a door leads directly out into the enclosed garden.

Outside, the garden is a real highlight. With patio seating, a BBQ and stone steps leading up to a raised lawn, it’s a true sun trap and a wonderful space for al fresco dining, morning coffees or simply soaking up the peaceful surroundings. A ground-floor toilet completes the downstairs accommodation.

Upstairs, there are two well-proportioned double bedrooms, both beautifully decorated in a classic English country cottage style. One of the bedrooms also benefits from a small adjoining child’s room with a toddler bed, making it ideal for families with little ones. The family bathroom is also on this floor and features a shower over the bath.

Cleveden Cottage is situated in the quiet village of Newholm, on the outskirts of Whitby and just one mile from the stunning sandy beach at Sandsend, which can be reached on foot in around 20 minutes or by car in just 5 minutes. Sandsend is a beautiful coastal village with a sweeping beach, cafés, a pub and dramatic coastal scenery.

Whitby itself is a short drive away, or you can take advantage of the nearby park and ride, which is within walking distance of the cottage. Whitby offers a vibrant mix of independent shops, historic streets, harbourside walks, museums, cafés, pubs and restaurants, all set beneath the iconic Abbey and clifftop views.

The cottage is perfectly placed for exploring the glorious Yorkshire coastline as well as the vast open landscapes of the North York Moors National Park, with its heather-clad moors, wooded valleys, historic villages and endless walking and cycling routes. The nearby Cleveland Way is a spectacular cliff-top walking trail that runs along the coastline, connecting Whitby with charming seaside villages including Sandsend, Robin Hood’s Bay, Staithes, Runswick Bay and Saltburn.

Well-behaved dogs are very welcome at Cleveden Cottage and will be spoilt for choice when it comes to walks. Many local beaches, including Sandsend and Whitby, have dog-friendly areas all year round, making this an ideal choice for guests holidaying with their four-legged companions. Please keep your four legged friend downstairs during your stay. Pub within 1 mile.
