About this property

Pepper Cottage

Tucked away in a small hamlet in the Lake District, Pepper Cottage is a family-friendly property within a stones throw of pubs, shops and attractions. Guests can use the cottage as a base to explore the wondrous countryside, local villages and lakes or simply relax in comfortable surroundings in an area bursting with rural charm. The modern spacious interiors of the 2-bedroom cottage are welcoming, with open-plan living and the enclosed garden is a perfect playground for children and pets.

Immerse yourself in the natural beauty of Cumbria’s South Lakes at Pepper Cottage. This delightful, private retreat caters to families, groups of friends, couples and pets and can sleep up to 4 people in total.

The refurbished cottage can be found in the hamlet of Knipefold, just over a mile from Hawkshead, home to National Trust’s Beatrix Potter Gallery, independent shops, pubs, cafes and restaurants. The pretty town of Ambleside is just over 10 minutes’ drive away and Tarn Hows beauty spot, one of the Lake Districts most photographed areas, can be accessed on foot, by car or bicycle.

Living Room/Dining Area/Kitchen

The sociable 50sqm open plan area on the ground floor of Pepper Cottage is light and airy with open views of the countryside and access to a south facing patio through bi-fold doors.

In the lounge, guests can relax and unwind on a comfortable L-shaped leather sofa while watching a favourite movie or read a book on the reclining armchair by a log burning fireplace.

A fully equipped, bespoke kitchen with a casual breakfast bar links seamlessly to the lounge. Enjoy morning coffee listening to music on the entertainment system or share stories over a glass of wine as food is being prepared in the evening.

For a more formal dining experience, the table seats 6 people in the lounge area. Enjoy a full breakfast, Sunday roast, or themed buffet evening showcasing dishes made with local produce.

There are also opportunities for alfresco dining (weather permitting) courtesy of a BBQ, south facing patio and other seating areas.

Underfloor heating is timed too, to keep the property at an optimal temperature year-round.

Master Bedroom

All on one floor the Master Bedroom welcomes guests with soft white linens, scenic wall photographs and quirky soft furnishings. The largest of the two bedrooms, the master, also benefits from spectacular views over the garden and valley.

A comfortable King-size bed guarantees a good night’s sleep and the adjoining en-suite with walk-in rainfall style shower and freestanding bath is a place to soak in bubbles and unwind while enjoying uninterrupted views.

Second Bedroom

Furnished with two single beds, a lamp and photographs, this room caters to families and friends travelling together. Central heating keeps the warm cool in winter months and the room also boasts garden views.

Guests have the use of a separate bathroom with wet room, custom mirror, floor-to-ceiling tiles and modern amenities.

Outdoor Spaces

Stunning views and sunny afternoons are commonplace on the south facing patio of Pepper Cottage. A grassy garden and gravelled area surround the cottage – a safe play area for children and dogs. At the summit, a bench and chairs allow for quiet meditation, yoga or creative pursuits such as reading, writing, painting or sketching. Alternatively, simply take the time to enjoy a sunrise cup of coffee or a spot of evening stargazing with a loved one.

The Area

Pepper Cottage is in prime position to explore all that the Lake District offers. The charming 12th century village of Hawkshead is just over a mile south of the cottage and can be reached by car, bicycle or on foot. The village boasts delicatessens where you can stock up on local produce or enjoy a delicious lunch, four traditional pubs and you can follow in the footsteps of Beatrix Potter and William Wordsworth who went to school here.

Just 10 minutes’ drive away at the top of Lake Windermere, is the charming Lakeland town of Ambleside. Learn about local history at tiny Bridge House or Ambleside’s Roman Fort, gain some of the best lake views from Post Knott or take a cruise, kayak, canoe or rowboat out on the lake to explore 18 islands and scenic shorelines. Hikers may find the trails of ancient Skelghyll woods appealing or the trek to Stock Ghyll Force, an impressive 70ft cascading waterfall. Foodies and chocolate lovers shouldn’t leave without paying a visit to Old Bank House Chocolate Shop to pick up some tasty treats.

The quaint town of Grasmere north of Ambleside offers unique experiences from luxury spa establishments to shops selling custom Lakeland fragrances and cafes serving the famous Grasmere gingerbread. Literary lovers will also appreciate a trip to William Wordsworth’s Dove Cottage at Rydal Mount.

In addition to steam yacht gondola cruises on Coniston Water, there are plenty of things to see and do in Coniston village and along the water’s edge. Discover the Ruskin Museum, which showcases the history of Coniston from Stone Age times to recent years, follow the famous Cumbrian Way or enjoy a day of mountain biking in Grizedale Forest.
