Bijou 17th Century Cottage

This unique, characterful property has been thoughtfully designed to make the best use of space available and is Grade 2 listed. It lies in a picturesque setting and results in a charming cottage with a wealth of interesting and original features – panelled wood doors and wardrobe and Stuart beams. The holiday home boasts a reading/dressing room, a log burner, beautifully dressed windows with stylish fabrics and accessories. Original Lakeland slate flooring and exposed oak beams, with contemporary oak flooring upstairs. The view of local fells can be seen from the southern kitchen and bedroom windows, tempting for walkers. Guests can simply park up for the week and enjoy the lakes on foot. The cottage has walks straight from the door, along with breathtaking lake and mountain scenery. This cosy village cottage is designed for two. Note: No children allowed, including infants or smoking, but dogs may be considered. Shop (Spar), ATM, garage and gastro pub 50 metres away.

The cottage was built by 1690 and was originally part of the Coaching House, now Traditional Grade II Listed, and stables on the main Windermere route.

Outstanding, circular walk from the cottage to Troutbeck; after a visit to the National Trust Townend Hall, have a drink at The Mortal Man then follow old tracks and footpaths up to the top of Wansfell, for outstanding views over Windermere and Ambleside.

Lovely, cosy cottage.

We really enjoyed our stay at this beautiful cottage. It's in a great location and is the perfect place to cosy up by the fire and to use as a base to explore the Lakes. This was our second visit and we'll defnitely be back!

Charming cottage

Everything was lovely but isolated. Fortunately the bus service was wonderful. Be warned, there are steep narrow stairs to access the bedroom.

Cosy Cottage

Brilliantly located near pub and petrol station (which had all the basic things we needed)! Felt nice and isolated and it was great for our excursions! Shower was great temperature and the bedroom warmed up very quickly when heating on! Small kitchen but had everything we needed and added to the cosiness! Really enjoyed our stay!

Lovely stay

Cute little cottage in a good location with everything you would need. Stairs are typical of the age of the cottage, after a day out in the hills they became a challenge in themselves! Overall lovely couple days away. Thanks! Spar across the road had everything you would need including logs and kindling.

Ambleside

The property is undoubtedly small. It was very clean and comfortable - a perfect base for exploring this wonderful area. Plenty of grocery stores and pubs/restaurants in surrounding area. A very steep narrow staircase leading to the second level of the property. I note this has been mentioned in other reviews too. Overall, my wife and I were very satisfied with the property.

Smashing little hideaway

We arrived to find the most Gorgeous little house. It took me back 50 years to my stays with my grandmother. Everything we needed was provided and only a 45 minute walk or 5 minute drive to Windermere. The bed is super comfortable, the bathroom is modern and roomy. The reading room with day bed an absolute joy! The kitchen is kitted out with all that we needed. The sitting area was perfect for relaxing after a day out in the lakes. The log burning stove just topped the experience off. Parking for 1 car or 2 motorcycles just down the lane is out of view of the main road. Highly recommend this house if you are looking for a quiky simple stay. Great price too.

Nice area , overall unclean

The location of the property is brilliant if you enjoy walking. The major downside to this cottage it the cleanliness. Really let’s the place down. It smells a lot of cigarettes . There is a lot of pet hair , I don’t mind a little in a dog friendly cottage but this was ridiculous. I had to clean for an hour before we could relax. Such a shame as the owner was very helpful on the phone and it is a lovely place . Hopefully just a case of getting a new cleaner .

It wasn’t what I was expecting.Rather disappointed.Outdated inside and the outside needs tidying up, didn’t give a good first impression of the cottage.

A mixed experience

This is a very characterful cottage - the main living area is nicely furnished, and it has a good bathroom upstairs. The kitchen is tiny, which I was expecting. But the equipment in the kitchen is also very 'tired'. The oven is so old that the markings have worn off the knobs so it required complete guesswork to judge temperature, or the mode of the oven. I used it once and burnt what I was cooking. The interior of the oven is dirty and the door seal falling off. The switch on the kettle is also broken and fell off on my first night. The microwave oven is old, so more guesswork to judge the power settings. The kitchen as a whole wasn't that clean; I had to wash a few things when I arrived, including the cutlery tray in the drawer, which was grubby.

Charming location that allowed exploring the lake district without a car. Frequent buses at the stop nearby. Loved the old stone walls with the slate floors. We have an old house with narrow stairs, so they felt like home. (Hang onto the railing). We arrived in a downpour, and had some trouble locating #14 (overgrown). Thank goodness for SPAR at the gas station for hot coffee and food basics. Go hiking out the back, up the field, around the sheep for some incredible views

Beautiful cottage in Troutbeck Bridge

We loved our stay in this cottage. The owners have put such thought into the items and I loved the textiles and pictures. It was super comfy and a real treat to stay at the cottage. Although easy access via a main road and spar garage for goodies, the cottage itself is in a private road and set back. We were able to walk from the cottage to the most glorious walks. A great treat.
