NEIGHBORHOOD
Head north 1 ½ blocks and you’ll find San Francisco Bay. Stroll down to see the boats of the Marina, walk on groomed paths or the sandy beaches of Crissy Field where you’ll see the best kite boarders and wind surfers playing in the water. On calmer days you’re more likely to spot a sea lion bobbing in the surf, and occasionally a dolphin or even a grey whale. Continue to historic Fort Point at the base of the Golden Gate Bridge, just two miles west, where surfers hang ten when he conditions are right. or take the more rigorous hiking paths up the hill to walk across the iconic bridge itself. This part of the Presidio houses many entertaining public venues including Planet Granite climbing gym, Batter’s Box batting cages and House of Air trampoline park. Don’t miss the swans, turtles, koi fish and other wildlife including herons and egrets abundant in the pond adjacent to the 100+-year-old Neo Classical Palace of Fine Arts, one of the city’s most popular and picturesque photo backdrops, just two blocks from the house.
Head south four blocks and you’ll find yourself in the heart of the Marina’s commercial center-- Chestnut Street-- packed with lively restaurants, cafes, and boutiques. The neighborhood’s dining establishments are varied and abundant. Breakfast options range from Starbucks, Peets Coffee, and Noah’s Bagels to Le Marais for fancy espresso drinks and French pastries, or the popular Home Plate diner. Casual lunch options include designing your own gourmet salad at Pluto’s or The Plant Café Organic, grabbing a gourmet grilled cheese sandwich at Blue Barn or selecting a sustainably harvested ahi tuna poke bowl at Pacific Catch. For dinner you can enjoy a picture of Margaritas and Mexican fare while people watching from the sidewalk seating area at Tacolicious, or opt for world class Southern Italian Cuisine and wine parings at A-16.
Chestnut Street still boasts two independently owned neighborhood movie houses, the Presidio and Marina Theatres. There’s a small but well-stocked grocery store and a separate high quality meat market in case you’d rather pick up supplies to cook at home, an Apple Store, and a 24-hour Walgreens Pharmacy conveniently located just 5 blocks from the house. Other nightlife options within easy walking distance range from dive bars to wine bars to live music venues.
On Sunday mornings head west ½ mile to the Fort Mason Organic Farmers’ Market where you can buy prepared foods to eat on the spot, or pick up the finest quality local produce, meats and seafood, bread, produce and condiments to make your own picnic or transform into a gourmet dinner. It’s also a great place to pick up some local honey or olives to bring home as a souvenir. This location is also home to a diverse range of food trucks, accompanied by live music at Off the Grid every Friday evening from June through September.
Continue in his direction and you’ll find Aquatic Park, Fisherman's Wharf, North Beach, Pier 39, the Exploratorium, and the Ferry Building. San Francisco lends itself to being explored on foot, but it’s easy to drive or use public transit or ride-sharing services to reach other top sites including SFMOMA and the Palace of the Legion of Honor Art Museums, Golden Gate Park, (where you’ll find the California Academy of Sciences, the DeYoung Museum, the Conservatory of Flowers, Botanical Gardens, and the Japanese Tea Garden), Coit Tower, curvy Lombard Street, and Ocean Beach.

About the host
Hosted by owner/property manager
Gary and Anne met on the first day of graduate school at UCLA, and started dating a few weeks later. Eventually relocating to SF was a requirement for Gary, who headed to Northern California to attend UC Berkeley and moved to San Francisco when he graduated. He couldn't wait to return to "The City," and Anne agreed that it would be a terrific place to raise a family. So, after a few years in LA, we jumped at the opportunity when the investment bank Gary worked for asked if he'd be willing to relocate.
We really appreciate delicious food and wine, and Anne cooks often (her specialties are paella, gumbo, pesto, Caesar salad, and chocolate chip cookies with pecans or almonds). But we love eating out in San Francisco and are happy to offer restaurant suggestions to visitors.
Gary is a sports nut, who's been commissioner of his fantasy football league for over three decades. We're season ticket holders of the San Francisco Giants and Golden State Warriors as well as Cal Football and Basketball. Anne loves making art as well as appreciating it in places like SFMOMA and the DeYoung Museum. She ran three marathons including Boston, but has retired from running as she now needs a knee replacement. Our other hobbies include travel, attending concerts, and watching movies.

Why they chose this property
As a recently married couple we moved to San Francisco from Southern California, and immediately fell in love with the Marina District. For us the neighborhood offered the perfect combination as we are situated between nature in one direction and city life in the other.
After renting in this neighborhood, we were able to purchase our home a few months after our first baby was born, as we anticipated having another within a few years. We were only the second owners of the home; the seller, along with four siblings, had been raised in the house his parents built in 1926.
We chose the place because we loved its period charm including original fireplaces and plaster moldings. It was large enough Before moving in, we updated the kitchen with top-of-the-line appliances. A few years later we added a 900 square foot master suite with a deck, spacious bathroom, and two walk-in closets.
Our backyard used to be an organic vegetable farm in our urban backyard, but converted the space with landscaping to create a relaxing urban oasis. Keep an eye out for our friendly resident hummingbirds.
We raised two wonderful children to adulthood in this home. Now that they are out of the nest, we are traveling more (including visits to them at college and their workplaces), and have decided to offer our place for short term rentals for the first time.

What makes this property unique
Walk out our front door to the right and in a block and a half you will reach the Bay. Head west to the beach at Crissy Field, and continue to Fort Point or follow hiking trails up into the Presidio and across the Golden Gate Bridge. Turn right instead, and walk past Marina Green to Fort Mason with its organic farmers market on Sundays and Off the Grid, a roaming mobile food extravaganza on Friday nights from early March through late October. Continue in this direction to Aquatic Park and Fisherman's Wharf.
If you turn left out the front door, you will reach the Marina DIstrict's commercial hub in just a few blocks. On Chestnut Street you will find wonderful restaurants, cafes, bars, movie theaters and boutiques in the other. There's a grocery store and sustainable meat market if you'd like to pick up groceries and cook in our chef's kitchen.
