About this property

Large Home with Outstanding Views & Location

Incredible Price for Size in the Valley - Up to 28 people! Large groups, including sports teams, and families truly enjoy the spacious, entire house. There are 10 full and queen size beds, as well as four futons., totaling 28 that could sleep in shared accommodations! The home was an original Sears home built in the 1970s on acreage located on a bluff of the Matanuska River. Much of the house is original/retro and in a quiet, country setting with wide open spaces to almost every side. Our home fits so many people with an extremely economical price for the space. With so many people, it has other space that is needed - 2 full kitchens and 3 full refrigerators. Though it feels secluded with wide open spaces, it is only 5 minutes to downtown Palmer, where there are several shops, breweries and restaurants that exemplify the quaint, Alaskan pioneer spirit. The Palmer property is close to the Alaska State Fair, close to local hiking areas, and only about a twenty minute drive to the start of the Iditarod Race. The owner's home shares the short driveway to the road, but otherwise the property sits on 49 acres of Alaskan beauty.
Palmer is the ideal vacation spot to start your Alaskan vacation. It is close enough to Anchorage to arrive easily by several airlines, but far enough away to not be in the hustle of Alaska's biggest city. You can see it all from a location that feels like the real Alaska! Palmer is filled with history, as it sits on the ancestral lands of the Dena'ina and Ahtna peoples, but was established for non-Alaskan Natives in the 1930s as part of Roosevelt's New Deal's Federal Emergency Relief Administration. Many historic sites are found in Palmer for the history buff, and an original pioneer cabin is right next to this home that now serves as storage for the owners.
If you like views, you can see Pioneer Peak, the Matanuska Glacier, and the Matanuska River from the front deck. For the outdoor enthusiast, there are challenging hikes in the area. Lazy Mountain hiking trail is very close, which is a four mile hike that has an elevation climb of almost 3,000 feet. Hatcher's Pass is another popular hike and ski area within a 10-15 minute drive. For animal enthusiasts, there are local reindeer and musk ox farms for touring. There are several lakes in the area for canoeing, fishing, and boating, all within a 15-30 minute drive. Equipment is available for rent in the Palmer/Wasilla area. Four-wheelers and snowmobiles are also available for rent in the area for those who want to see Alaska from off-road. Within minutes, there are several fun places: Matanuska River Park, Knik River State Park, Matanuska Lake State Park, Palmer Hay Flats Wildlife Refuge, Alaska ZipLine Tours, or Alaska Horse Adventure trail rides. Palmer is also a fantastic town that serves as a great starting point for travelers who would like to take day trips to see Southern Alaska. Many day trips could include historic Talkeetna with its views of Denali [previously known as Mt. McKinley (1.5 hours)], the Matanuska glacier and glacier hikes (1 hour), Dall Sheep viewing on Sheep Mountain (1.5 hours), Girdwood and Alyeska ski resort (1.5 hours), Whitewater rafting (1 hour), and several stopping points for Salmon fishing throughout the Alaska rivers.
This home could serve as the perfect home for large family and friend trips, retreats, or a gathering place for wedding guests. The location offers the best of Alaska with the convenience of the perfect Alaskan town.

About the host

Host profile image
Jim and Keri are originally from Texas, but have been in and out of Alaska since 2000. They met in college, and their shared hobbies and activities connected them. Their favorite activities have always included wide open spaces and outdoor adventures, which is why Alaska is one of their favorite places. They have three grown children that love to spend their free time on the property and exploring all the Alaskan wilderness.

Why they chose this property

This property has one of the best views in all of the Mat-Su Valley of Alaska. The home is an older home, but has the convenient layout so that people are comfortable in spacious living quarters. Originally, the home was purchased and a barn/guest house was built on the property. This house was maintained due to the size and location, making it one of the larger family homes that could accommodate many friends and family that come to visit. The fact that the original pioneer cabin is still on the property made the home and site more endearing, as both Jim and Keri appreciate history and antiquities.

What makes this property unique

Many people say there is no better view of the valley than from the front window and porch. The proximity on the bluff of the Matanuska River make for a nice hike to sit and enjoy the serenity of the river and nature. The home was built in the early 1970s, which means the rooms and spaces are much larger than you would find with a newer home, so family and friends can spend great times together but have space to find solitude if needed. Recently, they hosted one of the children that grew up in the home and learned so much more history of the home! It was wonderful to hear of the happy family times spent in this location!
