About this property
Simonson Lakeside on Highland Lake
This is the first level of our home on Highland Lake.
The house has been in my family since 1954. In 1983, the first level was created by my parents for their retirement home. It has been updated since then, but remains very close to what they created.
The second level was completely redone in 2017. Jennifer and Peter continue to live there for the Summers in Maine (mid-June to mid- September), and expect to be there while the guests are there.
The property was and continues to be set up as two separate residences. There is a connecting door, but we keep that locked when the house is occupied by two separate groups (guests and owners).
The first level is a walk-out onto a deck that is 7 feet above the level of the lake.
There is a dock with the water level 5 feet deep at the end.
We face the West, so you will get spectacular sunsets. The lake is 640 acres. It is located 20 minutes from Downtown Portland, and 40 minutes from Freeport, home to LL Bean.

Pete and Jen are wonderful hosts, and their home is beautiful. The view of the lake from the inside and outside is amazing. It was a peaceful getaway and the perfect vacation.
This beautiful home had everything we needed for a relaxing vacation. The living space was very clean and comfortable with a well stocked kitchen and nice deck where we enjoyed the beautiful sunsets, and the lake was great for kayaking. It was also close enough to easily explore the Maine coastline. Peter and Jennifer were super hosts with great communication and easy check-in/check-out. We would definitely love to stay here again!
We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at the property. Peter and Jennifer are excellent hosts. Our only constructive comments would be to highlight the steep staircase and high tub to any persons with a disability. We were able to circumvent the stairs by walking to the front of the property, which was an easy workaround, and we managed the tub. These are not criticisms but a heads up for others so not surprised. We loved the location and house.
We only stayed one night but wished it could have been longer. What a perfect home on the lake. Pete was a great host and made us feel extremely welcome. Online pictures don’t quite do this property justice. Highly recommend staying here.
Perfect girls weekend on the lake. My 3 friends and I found the property to be meticulously clean and well-stocked. Peter was helpful with anything we needed and the location on the lake can't be beat. Half an hour or so into Portland for dinner and/or sightseeing. We'll be back next summer!
This lakeside is a family heirloom. We met the owner who gave us a little history of his home. It was immaculate. I loved all the little painted tiles, built in shelves; it was visually appealing. My favorite part was sitting on the deck in the morning or evening.. it was so peaceful. At night one can hear the loons. I hope to return someday. Maine is a beautiful state, and this home sits on a little piece of heaven.
Challenging to get there in the dark, but so worth it!
Beautiful accommodations and wonderful hosts!
Enjoyed our “Girls Getaway “ week in the Portland area!
We enjoyed our stay. Super clean house located in a secluded area but close enough to the city and beaches. Well equipped kitchen which enabled us to cook meals. Great to meet the owners who were friendly and even offered boat rides on the lake!
We enjoyed the lake house very much! Beautiful views out every window of either the lake or wooded gardens. The place afforded lots of privacy with its location and was well appointed with everything we needed and more. The owners were on site, helpful and friendly, and even offered a boat ride to see an eagles nest! My husband and I and my sister and brother-in-law really enjoyed our stay and felt completely at home. Thank you again!
We had such a relaxing, enjoyable stay on Highland Lake. The house is SO nice and the pictures don’t do it justice. Peter and Jennifer have provided everything you would need for an extended stay. We loved it so much we didn’t need to do anything but enjoy the deck!
Take a ride to Mackworth Island State Park in Falmouth for a 1.5 mile perimeter walk in the woods. Peaceful, picturesque and mostly in the shade.
Thank you, Peter and Jennifer!
We spent a very pleasant couple of days at this property. The host was gracious and helpful, the house was well appointed and the view was spectacular.
Great place to getaway for a long weekend. Right on a beautiful lake but close enough to the necessities.
Property is extremely well kept. Hosts were helpful and responsive from the time of reservation until we drove away.
Idyllic stay on a beautiful lake with awesome host. House and view even better than the pictures Also enjoyed swimming right off the dock Whole family wants to go again !
The photos of this property on the listing don’t do it justice. It’s really lovely. You are literally 10 steps from the lake. The kitchen is amazingly well-stocked, there’s a nice deck on the water, the views from any room on the back side of the house are of the lake (which was very quiet), and the owner was kind enough to share a bottle of wine. This property is less than 30 minutes from downtown Portland. While staying there we went to the Maine Maritime Museum in Bath (highly recommend) where we took a boat ride and saw 10 lighthouses and some lovely territory, and we did a catamaran sail out of Saco which was fun and relaxing. We also visited Kennebunkport and some beaches in that area. This place is great if you need a break from city life or want a terrific home base to explore the area.
What a gem! This home (even nicer than the photos!) is beautifully decorated and well appointed and close to Portland. The owners, Pete and Jen, took great care stocking the home with everything you'd need, including excellent drinking water (new water filtration system). If I couldn't find something (lobster crackers for instance), Pete happily supplied it (lobster crackers and bibs, for instance). It was like having my best neighbor transported to Maine. Large windows/glass doors in every room ensure great lake views throughout. Comfortable beds/sofa/plenty of linens and soap/hand sanitizer/ and even garage space for the car! What more could I ask for? Sitting on the patio every morning and watching the sunset from the same spot every evening was a highlight. This ain't your grandparents "camp", and that's a very good thing.
My husband and I enjoyed our peaceful quiet getaway. Close enough to Portland but far enough away for no loud city sounds. A comfortable and beautiful place to spend a anniversary celebration!
It was a beautiful spot with a spectacular view. It was off the beaten trail so conducive for walking and biking. My husband and I got up every morning and sat not he deck over-looking the water and had our coffee. At night we listened to the loons. The beds were comfortable, the kitchen well stocked. The owner and his wife were lovely, incredible helpful and full of good information. We will be returning..
What a find!! This was the perfect spot to stay while touring the local colleges. It was immaculate and a comfortable size for our family of four. We really enjoyed the large deck overlooking the lake and saw some spectacular sunsets. Pete was a fantastic host and even went out of his way to mail us some laundry we left behind.
We needed a long weekend getaway, to celebrate our 25th, spend time with aging parents, get some r&r and decompress from the daily grind. The weekend was perfect all around. Our hosts Peter and Jennifer were super-friendly and helpful, and were there when we needed. They even went above and beyond to make our experience absolutely fabulous. The accommodations were well-appointed. The location was spectacular, especially at sunrise and sunset. Enjoyed some wildlife. Soaked in peace and tranquility, and re-charged the batteries. Definitely on my list of future repeat stays. Highly recommended!
We had a wonderful, although short, visit. We were greeted warmly and shown around thoroughly. The information and instructions for the cottage were very helpful. The. lake is just gorgeous and the property is very nicely done. Peter was a great host, helping us with every need. I can't say enough nice things about this property and highly encourage anyone to consider it.
