About this property

Cozy Apartment in Hardwick Village (3B)

Fully equipped and furnished two-bedroom apartment with hardwood floors, high ceilings and mid-century modern decor for short- and medium-term rental in the quaint village of Hardwick, Vermont. The rental apartment is in a recently renovated 1895 historic building with a full kitchen and dining/living area. Large bay windows offer lovely views of the Lamoille River. A park with trees, perennials and seating sits adjacent to the building.

The apartment is only a few steps from several popular restaurants. A gym is located a block away. A food co-op with local and home-grown products along with a more traditional grocery store are within easy walking distance. The Hardwick Trails, 6 miles of woodland hiking and cross-country skiing, are less than half a mile away. World-reknowned brewery, Hill Farmstead Beer, is in nearby Greensboro. Local water bodies for swimming and kayaking include Caspian Lake, Wolcott Pond and Green River Reservoir (also with non-motorized boat access). Craftsbury Outdoor Center with cross-country skiing and running trails, along with rowing facilities, is 14 miles away. The Lamoille Valley Rail Trail offers running, walking and biking through the river valley.

The rental is within easy driving distance of local ski resorts and near Stowe, Greensboro, and Smugglers Notch. Montreal is 2 hours away. It is also located near longer hiking trails, including the Appalachian and Long trails, mountain biking trails, canoeing and kayaking, cross-country skiing, and lots of good antiquing.

The Village of Hardwick has become known as a sustainable food center, and was featured in the book, "The Town that Food Saved," by Ben Hewitt. Small food producers, such as the Cellars at Jasper Hill cheeses, Vermont Soy products, Pete's Greens, High Mowing Seeds, and the Vermont Food Venture Center cluster in and around the town.

There is an additional $25.00 fee per person, per night, for the third and fourth guests.

My husband and I moved to northern Vermont from Pennsylvania in the mid 1980s. We raised our three boys here and have been quite involved in the community over the decades. Although we live out of town off of a small dirt road, my husband had his architectural practice in Hardwick. The historic restoration of this and the adjacent building were the highlights of his career.

Why they chose this property

The history of this building is interesting and knowing about it helped us with its restoration. Willie W. Marshall arrived in Hardwick in 1890 and soon after constructed The Marshall Block building, now the site of the renovated apartments. Marshall opened a clothing, dry goods, and shoe store, which he maintained until 1920. Retaining ownership of the building, he turned his attention to land acquisition and property development in Hardwick, designing many of the streets and lots nearby. A movie theater once existed next to this building, where a landscaped park now sits, but it burned down years ago. My husband redesigned the space and our family has landscaped it.
