About the host
Hosted by Barb Culligan
I purchased this home in 1986 and lived here with my children for several years, and later made the upstairs apartment my home. I worked as a dietitian for HCA Centennial Medical Center before going in to pharmaceutical sales. Now retired, I especially enjoy traveling. My husband and I have stayed at over 50 short term rentals internationally, including penthouse apartments, farm houses and houseboats. I like to incorporate the best hospitality ideas from those visits into amenities at The Ashwood Bungalow.
Why they chose this property
We fell in love with the area as soon as we saw it in the 1980s. We moved from the suburb of Hermitage; the tree-lined sidewalks, better schools and historic nature of the neighborhood appealed to us. In my opinion, this is the best residential neighborhood in Nashville. It is far enough from the tourist scene to be quiet and comfortable, yet close enough to enjoy all that Nashville offers.
What makes this property unique
A Bit Of History:
The house was originally a single family dwelling with one bedroom downstairs and two bedrooms upstairs. It was a model of the “Modern” craftsman home, perhaps a Sears Home Kit. Sometime, maybe in the 1940’s or 1950’s, the upstairs was converted into a an apartment with it's own outside stairs & entrance, creating a duplex.
When I bought it in 1986 it was a rooming house for multiple tenants. There was evidence that homeless people had camped in the yard. The heat source downstairs was a propane heater in one bedroom; another room had been closed off due to fire damage.
The property underwent extensive renovation just before we moved in. My children and I lived there for 5 years, and then we rented to long-term tenants until 2017. We did another extensive renovation that took 1 year.
The recent work included straightening a collapsing front column; extensive work on the foundation, retaining wall and support beams in the basement; treating for termites; replacing rotten siding on the dormers; removing a leaking chimney; 2 new bathrooms and a new kitchen; new hardwood floors; replacing the remaining ball-and-tube wiring; paint inside and outside; new gutters; 6 tons of gravel in the driveway; grading the side yard to control water, and lots of tree trimming/tree removal.
When that work was finished we renovated the upstairs, which took another year. Although we did not revert the property to a single family dwelling, we made every effort to preserve the Craftsman style and feel of the house.
Unlike nearby property owners, we have not expanded our footprint. We maintain the back and side yards as green space instead of filling them in. An arctic blast in December 2022 caused much of our landscaping and trees to die, as it did all over Nashville. We will start again on those efforts as time and money allow.
