Great location but without AC it wasn't worth it

The proximity to the water can't be beat. But last year there was an electric problem and this year the AC went unrepaired all week. He compensated us but the whole place needs an update to realize its potential.

First Wave first stay

My family and I had a great week at this classic beach house. Location is absolutely perfect. The place was very clean with a hot tub on the deck overlooking the ocean. First time staying here and we will most definitely book again. Property manager was very easy to work with and gave plenty of information.

I loved this old Nags Head style home, there were some super cute accents… from the seashell wallpaper to the stained glass window, loved it!!! Also, super clean and no critters!!! The view and the easy access to the beach was EVERYTHING!!!!!

The Views!

The views were incredible! We happened to go during a nor eastern so lots of wind and rain. House was colder then we anticipated but the property care taker brought us out a portable heater that helped. Did not have an ice maker so make sure you bring ice. We would go back again for sure.

Great bones, great location. Owner communicated very well with all needs and info. However, the property is super outdated and needs to be redone. What an amazing location and view but it felt dirty. Lots of flies inside and mold. Carpeting is gross.

An amazing trip

My family and I had an amazing stay at First Wave. The house was in the perfect location, just behind the dune. The beach was clean and quiet. Not too crowded. We saw dolphins everyday and there was an awesome little sandbar daily at the beach for the kids to play in. The views from the house are unbelievable. The furniture was comfortable and well maintained. We had plenty of room for our large group. The hot tub was a treat. The outdoor shower and hose on the upper deck helped us keep sand out of the house. I have nothing but good things to say about our trip.

Oceanfront home

We were a little disappointed in the condition of the house. The kitchen cabinets were not very clean. A few would not close. The kitchen was not equipped with enough essentials. The layout of the house was perfect for large families. The deck offered a lot of seating. The views from the bedrooms & living area were amazing. With a better job cleaning for the next family & getting the kitchen updated, we would probably stay again. But for the price we paid for a week, we were disappointed.

Family Getaway

This property was everything as described! Perfect spot on the beach. The wrap-around deck was amazing! Plenty of room for 12 of us to watch the waves crash and the dolphins swim. Hot tub was awesome! The layout also worked out great for our families with enough room to spread out and be comfortable. The location was close to shopping and restaurants. The only cons were having to bring your own bed linens, washer/dryer did not work well and windows could not be opened due to either lack of screens or just did not function. It does seem that the house is getting some updates so maybe they are working on that. None of this would deter us from staying again. We had an amazing time and memories were made!

House has good location but needs help.

Property is not being maintained or cleaned properly. Location is great and the house could be an excellent rental for a large group. Upon arrival, the downstairs toilet was in dire need of cleaning. We had to clean and disinfect. Downstairs beds looked like they had been slept in and just left as is. Several lights don't work. One of the toasters shorted out with flames and smoke when we tried to use it. Boards are falling off the exterior and flap in the wind making a banging noise. Temporary/ portable ac unit in dining room indicating central system is incapable of cooling the house. I would not rent this property again.

Amazing

We stayed the week of July 4. Fireworks were like the cherry on top staying here. It is exactly the type of place my family loves…old school Nags Head. We were not vacationing in a pent house nor a magazine show piece. This home is exactly as pictured. Sits almost on top of the water so very short walk to beach. Walking up and over the dune was a little tough on mom and dad but the kids and younger adults had no problems at all. The only thing about house keeping is I wish they would have vacuumed and swept. It was like walking on the beach! The deck is wonderful… no issues with splinters or nails or bad boards. Had everything we needed in the kitchen. AC worked great and having the box fans in each room was a great feature. View is spectacular. We also found if we closed curtains and blinds during the day the home stayed much cooler. Hot tub was amazing. A gentleman came out twice while we were there and cleaned it. He was a gem. The kids loved talking to him. The kids (8,4,and 2) loved the tidal pools directly in front of our chairs. So many memories were made. I can’t say enough wonderful things about First Wave!!

Disappointing Long Weekend Vacation

*Our experience was not to be expected: -The pictures of the house and sand dune setting did not match the actual setting!! (Large sand dune to get to the beach) -The fooseball table in the picture is not there!! -The screen door in the living room just falls right off with no effort!! -There is no linen service, so that makes your stay so much more complicated!! -The hot tub was drained and not working when we arrived and I did not see anything about that in the posting for rental at all!! (Especially when its the time of year to use a hot tub / October) -The house was very dirty!! (Hair and dirt all over) -All the toilets would barely flush!! -There was pigeons walking around on the ceiling of the orange master bathroom!! (It's nice getting out of the shower to be greeted by pigeons through the vent fan) -None of the dish network receivers worked!! -Trash all around the outside of the house!! -All the windows on the house said "please do not open" and most of them where SCREWED SHUT!! -No ocean view through the living room windows due to being very dirty!! -Very disappointing to spend so much money for the experience!!

Great location but needs maintenance.

Rustic Cabin, great location. Communication with owner very good. Easy check in/out. We would consider staying there again if properly maintained. The negative is that the property is in need of a lot of maintenance. There are stains on the carpets and furniture. There are areas of the cabin that have peeling paint. There is a broken sofa that needs to be replaced. The living area is very dark. A lot of lights throughout the cabin are burned out and need replaced. There is one pot light that is hanging from the ceiling. Many windows won't open/close (it was discovered late in the week that the cooling problems in one of the bedrooms was due to windows that weren't closed all the way. Because of the broken window cranks we had a hard time getting them to latch which is probably why they were left open). In the "master bath" the shower knob wasn't the correct one. It would just spin, making it hard to use the shower. Also in the master bath there were multiple electric switches just inches from the shower that didn't appear to be protected by a GFCI circuit (they weren't protected by the GFCI outlet in the bath because I tried. They could be on a GFCI breaker??). Also the GFCI outlet in the master bath had no cover. There was mold along the tub/baseboard in the downstairs bathroom. One of the downstairs comforters was covered in sand upon arrival. Finally, on the last full day we had hard rain most of the day. We discovered that water was running down the outside of the kitchen cupboards. We contacted the owner who responded that someone would be there on Saturday to fix the roof. None of this ruined our vacation. We don't mind rustic and the location was awesome. The place just needs to be maintained and cleaned properly.

For folks that want beach time its great. For Those who want to fish in the surf not so good as the beach is too flat at this location. The beach has either been renourished or built up by storms but it is very flat at this location. Also a steep dune has been created by the wind that must be crossed to get to the beach. Would be a tough climb for elderly.. Parking could be an issue. need to minimize the number of cars parking.

As far as any potential issues with the property, read the other reviews. My assumption is this place was built before building billions of dollars of houses on sandbar islands was cool. So yeah, it's not one of the new modern 5 star built in the last 20 years homes. Some updates that have been made may have been done on a budget and the cleaning crew isn't the world's most thorough for the price paid for cleaning fees. Although in a vacation spot I can't imagine a great cleaner work cheaply. Now even with all that said, we had a great time. We fit perfectly with the 12 people we had. Beds were comfortable, it's one of only a handful of houses not set back off the beach. So i could stand on the deck watch my kids have fun while I was at the house with another. It's also a great price compared to other places. So yeah if you read the comments and are cool with the quirks then your gonna have a good stay. Work has been done on the deck that others have mentioned. Its not 100% yet but they are getting there. Host was very responsive to messages and concerns as well. Also work A couple to tips on this place 1. Bring your own hose to add onto the house. Because of the new dune, there is 0 chances of keeping sand of the deck under the house where the hose to rinse your feet is located. You will track sand into the house. Unless, you add a hose and run it to the top deck. I did that day 2 almost no sand inside. 2. The dune is pretty steep to get over so if you have some that might have a hard time keep that in mind. 3. This is just general travelers note. If you logged into Netflix or anything like it, log out when you leave so other's can't mess with your account. Also hot tub is winterized so off season bookings don't get that. We were bummed we didn't know ahead of time but we still had fun, it is the beach after all.
