About this property

Lakefront Mountain Retreat-WiFi,Pets,Pool,Pickleball,Golf,Tennis

Surrounded by the gentle grace of the Blue Ridge Mountains, this stunning lakefront home is the real 'On Golden Pond.' The lakefront mountain retreat is nestled on a private, 1+ acre wooded lot in Sherwood Forest, a 1000 acre Audubon Cooperative Sanctuary with only 200 houses, in Brevard, NC. Relax, watch and enjoy the natural surroundings of the lake and mountains and look for the white squirrels local to the area. Golf awaits on the 18-hole, par three course with pro shop (open year round). You may also swim in the heated junior Olympic-size pool, play tennis, pickleball or basketball, hike on any of the 22 miles of well-marked hiking trails located within the neighborhood, and enjoy the five lakes for fishing, swimming or canoeing (canoe, paddles, and life vests are provided for use). Lakes are stocked with bass and bluegill with no fishing license required. There is ping pong and swings for the kids.

The cabin is beautifully furnished and features 3 bedrooms and 3 full baths with two master bedrooms each with its own full private bath plus one additional bedroom and additional full bath downstairs. Ideally no more than 6 full-sized individuals. There is also central air conditioning/heat, a fully-equipped brand new kitchen with new appliances, a wood burning fireplace in the living room, vaulted ceilings, and a new glassed-in sunroom with a gas fireplace, a screened-in porch and outside decks all overlooking the lake. For your entertainment there are 3 HD flat-screened televisions with satellite service with pay-for-view and 2 DVD players plus lots of games. And for your convenience, there is wireless internet and a full laundry with washer and dryer.

Our lakefront mountain retreat is located only ten minutes from DuPont State Forest and Caesar's Head State Park with its incredible waterfalls, over 80 miles of hiking and mountain bike trails, and amazing overlooks. You are also within 10 miles from the Pisgah National Forest where you will find the Davidson River which boast more trophy trout per mile than any other stream in the country and unbelievable waterfalls. There is also tubing, rafting, horsebacking and Sliding Rock!

Brevard truly has something for everyone besides the 250 named waterfalls and hundreds of acres of the six state and national forests that surround it: There is also a thriving music and arts community, fantastic shopping, and outstanding dining in this charming Appalachian town. You may also want to visit The Flat Rock Playhouse, Biltmore Estate, and Carl Sandburg home that are but a few of the nearby cultural attractions. Visit and you'll understand why Rand McNally, The Wall Street Journal and National Geographic Traveler name this area one of America's top ten places to live and play.

Quiet retreat

We enjoyed Paula's place a great deal. Paula was an attentive host. She checked in to make sure we arrived and knew our way around. The email she sent ahead of time was invaluable and informative. The house is laid out perfectly. Everyone had their own bathroom and bedroom. The house was warm and inviting. The kitchen was stocked and the neighborhood is so peaceful and quiet. Be sure to check out the stars at night. Gorgeous.

Goose Point on Betty Kay Lake, Brevard, NC

A quiet soothing retreat after a day of hiking, exploring waterfalls, fly fishing, and enjoying all that Brevard and its environs have to offer. The view of the lake is restful and even sitting in the screened porch on a rainy day is wonderful.

Week on the Lake

The house was great. Location was close to Dupont and town. Loved fishing in the lakes and hiking the trails in the neighborhood. Saw some previous posts about water pressure and lumpy beds but we had no issues. Water pressure was better than at home and mattresses were very comfortable.

Perfect Stay

This was a perfect last-minute stay. We booked another home through a different agency and had safety concerns. Found this place last minute as we were scrambling however, not all dates were available online. The host was very responsive and accommodating, allowing us to arrive same day with our young children. We love the location! The home was perfect having all the essentials plus more than we needed. The home was very clean and exceeded expectations from the listing. We really enjoyed the community speaking with several of the locals who lived there, and spent much of our time fishing and walking throughout the neighborhood. We look forward to booking again for a future stay.

True Retreat

A lovely home overlooking a private lake. A wonderful place to retreat to after a long day of waterfalls and pottery. Began my mornings with tea on the screen porch and ended the days with a glass of wine in the same spot. A true home away from home.

Wonderful and Relaxing Respite

What a lovely house in the woods! It is welcoming and comfortable, with a great view of the lake which is only steps away. The drive through Sherwood Forest (where we saw white squirrels) leads to a very private get-away; and a short scenic drive into the charming town of Brevard leads to many good restaurants and craft and antique shops which are delightful. Brevard College and The Music Center are also most interesting to explore. We thoroughly enjoyed our visit there.

Weekend family getaway

We had a great experience staying in this home for a December hiking weekend with our family. The home is clean, comfortable, and has a well stocked kitchen. We cooked several meals at home while watching movies and playing games. With under a 15 minute drive, we were at the trail head to hiked to four waterfalls and a covered bridge. With a 10min drive we were shopping in Brevard. We also enjoyed the pickle ball courts. There are some nearby shops with delicious food and coffee. On our way out of the community we spotted a local white squirrel!

Great place to stay, quiet and secluded yet close to town and parks.

What a wonderful vacation! Paula was a great host who maintained contact throughout our stay. The house was fully stocked with everything you would need. We were able to grill outside, swim, canoe, and fish in the lake, and hike throughout the rest of the neighborhood. Having our beloved dog with us was a plus. Close to the city of Brevard nearby state parks and national forest. Small local grocery store right at neighborhood entrance. Plan to stay again, we had a great time.

Beautiful lakefront retreat

Rental experience very easy. Owner checked in prior to rental and on our first day there. Very thoughtful. Home is beautifully located in Sherwood Forest. Floor plan a little convoluted but it worked for us. Canoe and lake access were perfect.

Best Thanksgiving ever!

This house is everything the listing says, plus more! Wonderfully furnished to meet all needs. In the fall, we canoed, hiked, watched all the wildlife and just relaxed. In the other seasons I can just imagine the possibilities of enjoying the surrounding National Forests with all the hiking or still, just back at the house swimming and fishing. What was so WONDERFUL was the total peacefulness and quietness of the surroundings. All the people we met while hiking the grounds were extremely friendly. Great for couples or a family!

Great view of the lake.

Nice, roomy, some parts are updated some are not. Great water pressure. No king size bed. All 3 mattresses were completely worn out. Too hard with crevasses in the middle. Livingroom furniture practically new. Mildew in all the bathrooms, ceiling in bedroom, and downstairs smells pretty bad of mildew.

Second year at the house

Second year in a row for Thanksgiving. Cooking supplies that I needed for our Thanksgiving dinner was in the kitchen; utensils, pans, plenty of dishes. Quiet week with COLD weather that we did not mind, one day of rain and then beautiful snow the next morning. SO peaceful, quiet - did not want to leave. Plenty of towels and a wonderfully appointed/ decorated, comfortable house. Have already booked it for next year. All the folks in the community are very friendly. Spring and summer must be wonderful, but we love our November visit. Lots of wiLdlife. Paula is great to work with. Chris

Most excellent Stay

I really really enjoyed my time here, the only regret was that it was way too short, would have been great to stay few more days. Everything was just awesome from the temperature, the scenery, the weather and to the proximity to the various waterfalls and I loved the fact that I could bring my furry family member. The cabin was really well stocked with all the essential items, did not have to buy ANYTHING. This was the first cabin that we didn't have to purchase anything which was nice. I really liked the layout, updated kitchen and the fireplace. I wished I could have taken the advantage of the cheap golf fees (next time). It's also great that there is swimming pool and tennis courts (next time as well). Oh and it was great that we didn't need fishing license to fish. Overall, I would highly recommend this cabin and Paula the owner is just great, extremely organized and helpful with the local guides she made available at the cabin and it was very kind of her to let us check out late. Just book the cabin and enjoy everything it has to offer.

Didn't want to leave!!!!

Our family of 5 adults and an (almost) 2 yr old stayed here 10/12 - 10/16. This is the 8th vacation house that I've stayed in (Tn, NC, Ca, Fl). This house is without a doubt the most comfortable, clean, well furnished house of all. The location was beautiful and convenient - easy to get to Brevard, to the Appalachian Trail, to Sliding Rock...... The property was just as described - except that words nor picures do the beauty of the fall colors around the lake justice. There were deer that grazed through the yard everyday. We looked and looked for a white squirrel, but only saw regular ole squirrels......maybe next time. The gas fireplace was a wonderful way to knock the chill off in the glass sunroom - it was very comfortable sitting and enjoying the surroundings. The gates on the porch helped to make us comfortable with the 2 yr old - oh - and we had fresh fish for dinner our first night there - it was delicious!!!! I absolutely would love to stay at Paula's Mountain Retreat again and would recommend for anyone/any ages - unless you can't climb stairs at all. We all had a great time - our only complaint was that we just didn't stay long enough!!!! Thank you for providing such a nice rental - one that has character and comfort!!!!

Great location...

My husband and two kids twelve and thirteen enjoyed the many activities on and off the grounds. My son truly enjoys fishing that is part of the reason we selected a lake house. There are 5 lakes in the development and we hit each one catching fish at almost every cast. Needless to say, the kids every morning were out before we journeyed out for our zip lining, looking for waterfalls, and the fish hatchery in Pigsah to experience fly fishing for trout. As I said my kids love to fish. Everything was conveniently located by which all took less than an hour to reach. Zip lining being the furthest at Earthshine in Toxaway, NC. What a fun family memory and the guides have great personallities making it exciting. White squirles at Brevard College were fun to find and an afternoon of shopping the downtown shops. We were exhausted when we made it back to the house and it was nice to have a house with all the amenities such as the comforts of home. The pictures were just as it looked - beautiful! The beds were comfy. We made many memories. The downstair basement and one bedroom, less a bathroom, was cold in the summer when we were there July 24-30, 2011. There was a furnace but we weren't using that bedroom but it was nice doing laundry in a cool area. We let the kids pick what bedroom they wanted and since they both were suites with bathrooms they were equally nice. The only real difference is the size of the vanity in one bathroom was a little smaller, the one not pictured, and one had a walk in closet. We stood a week and we really only used the drawers and our suitcases. We were super casual and my doing a small load every other day. we didn't even have a real need for all the clothes we brought. I tend to always over pack. The canoe for our use left on the dock was sweet as my son and I would journey out to fish just after dinner. We had about ten bats flying over us just as it was approaching dark and lightning bugs as we headed back up to the house. Our dog enjoyed the walks, I however did not want to be outside when it did get dark as you couldn't see your hand in front of your face. And you could hear all kinds of night creatures. So at night we would curl up and watch a movie and have some hot cocoa. We truly were exhausted from our daily adventure. Thank you for sharing your home with us city folks from Florida. We love North Carolina and plan to return as my kids go to camp in Tennessee every summer. Sights we don't see in FL.

About the host

I am a wife, mother, business owner, and dog trainer. I fell in love with this house and area on vacation and purchased it in 2007. If I could earn a living there, I would be there full-time so maybe when I retire...

I get great pleasure from guests renting my house and enjoying it as much as I do. My guests tend to be fun and fabulous people who want to enjoy the mountains and water in a beautiful place and not be cooped up in a hotel room. Most of my guests are repeat renters and come back every year. I enjoy helping them get the most out of their time in Brevard and have a lot of documents I can provide on "best and favorite things in the area" based on personal desires.

Please let me know how I can service you best!

Why they chose this property

After looking for a vacation home for over 10 years, Steve and I finally found this unbelievable place. When we saw it I knew right way it was "the one" when we saw the lake view. The realtor was smart and showed us the property even though I told her it was more than I wanted to spend because it was waterfront (: 16 years later we love it even more each time we are there.

What makes this property unique

Having a combination of lake and mountains cannot be beaten. We love that we are close to such a quaint town with lots of restaurants and live music, but even closer to beautiful parks with waterfalls.
