About this property

Catalina Foothills Authentic Arizona Adobe

Lovely Casita nestled in the Foothills of Tucson. City lights and spectacular mountain views! This original 1930s Perkins Addition guest ranch adobe casita has been lovingly restored and features 2 ft. adobe walls with true lime plaster (just like San Xavier del Bac Mission). The home has retained all the details of guest ranch charm but has been updated with the modern amenities of European appliances in the kitchen and laundry facility and upgraded spacious bath suite. Mesquite wood and copper countertops complement the original ox blood concrete floors and Douglas fir wood ceilings and doors. The views are panoramic and the home sits on a two acre hilltop lot above the hub of the River walk and the St. Phillips Plaza area. You will feel like part of the old west, but will be conveniently located to the University of Arizona and Downtown Tucson with all of the nightlife, culture and dining at your doorstep. The "chicken coop" features a lighted outdoor entertainment area complete with gas grill and nearby hot tub (great for star gazing).

King-sized bed with upgraded linens and high speed internet complete the adobe retreat. You will never want to leave.

About the host

I am a designer and home builder. I am a native of Tucson and love the desert and all it has to offer. I am delighted to share my special and unique home with adventurers that enjoy unusual and historic properties (but also like the comforts of upscale amenities).

Why they chose this property

This property was shown to me by the owner, a 90 year old gentleman, who enjoyed it as his winter home for many years. He was the second owner after the Perkins'. I was given the opportunity to purchase it from him because he knew I would honor and restore the home without losing the history or charm of the original dude ranch beginnings.

What makes this property unique

A mud adobe house is a living breathing structure. The mud came from the Rillito river and the property itself. It is cool during the hot days and snug and warm in the cool desert evenings. The house has no paint on the walls, rather lime plaster was used to restore the walls to their original luster. The lime plaster, hardens and resists water, but allows the home to breathe as latex paint would not. The cabinets, though new, were hand built by craftsmen and the doors and ceilings are of Douglas fir native to Northern Arizona and are original to the home. Mesquite and copper countertops (also native to Arizona) were also hand crafted. Water, being the most precious resource of the desert is conserved through a gray water system on the property. This home is perfectly suited to the Sonoran Desert environment and the lot has many old saguaros. The original "chicken coop" has been retained and is now a wonderful outdoor dining space. The high quality doors and windows provide great insulation, but are situated to proved cross breezes during the delightful 75 degree winter days.
I hope you will enjoy the thought and detail that was given to this restoration as much as I have enjoyed making it happen.
