About this property

Owls Head Village Post Office

A Post Office as a vacation rental? Yes - Absolutely. This spectacular renovated building started as a barn on a nearby island in the 1800's. The downstairs of this historic building has been the working local post office since 1931. Upstairs, insulated from any noise of a small village meeting place, is the open loft style apartment, with soaring cathedral ceilings. Designed and decorated like a historic Maine cottage. Comfortably furnished, this property is the perfect romantic getaway. A great location, with amenities close by.

The modern, cozy kitchen will support all of your cooking needs. Plenty of inside dining areas, as well as dining al fresco on the deck, right next to the kitchen. The loft and cupola are private retreats for children in your party, just like sleeping in a tree house! The views from the cupola are panoramic, with a peek of the ocean in the distance (seasonally). There's a private deck off the back offering beautiful views of our gardens, where you can eat dinner and watch the sunset. The gardens and expansive lawn, lead to a small pond where you can sit next to the fire pit and roast marshmallows.

Owls Head is a secluded and scenic buoy and lobster pot dotted peninsula, one of Maine's authentic waterfront colonies. Centrally located in midcoast Maine, it is the perfect starting point for day-trip adventures. Rockland is only 5 minutes away and 15 minutes to Camden, both offer great shopping, museums, art galleries and festivals. Next door is the "world's best" general store with "award winning" breakfasts and lunches served daily. Grocery items, soda, and wine available for you to take along on your daily adventures. A five minute walk down the hill takes you to a wharf, where you can buy lobster right off the boat. Only 3 minutes down the road is our favorite (award winning) farm to table restaurant, Primo's. There are so many amazing restaurants and lobster shacks close by.

Turns out, you can get there and almost anywhere from here!

Still a favorite

We have stayed here several times and coming back just brings us joy. Mornings on the balcony with coffee and a book are the best. Access to kayaks and food right next door just can’t be beat.

Perfect Little Getaway

This is our second time staying at the Post Office and we can't wait to return. Our family loves the coziness of this home and all the character every nook offers. We couldn't imagine staying anywhere else when we're up visiting our favorite place in Maine!

A Perfect Maine Stay

The Post Office is everything you want in a vacation rental. Charming, cozy, well thought out, and close to all the things. Our family of four (two big kids) fit well in the space. The beds were comfortable and the kitchen has everything you need. The garden is beautiful and the peonies and irises were popping when we were there. The hosts were accessible and had lovely recommendations of the local scene. We would definitely come back!!

Beautiful property for a long weekend

The Post Office was a great place for us to spend a long weekend and explore the coast. Everything we needed was there, we enjoyed the fire pit and having access to the grill. We walked to the lighthouse which was a nice chill outing, then headed up to Acadia on the other full day we had, about a two hour drive but doable as a day trip. Communication was great and the space felt very homey!

Total delight

One of our favorite rentals ever, such a joy to get to stay here! Pictures are just a tiny glimpse, so much better in person even. We especially enjoyed the General Store right next door - wonderful food and service. Thank you for all the love and care put into creating and maintaining this special place! 10/10

Once again, a fantastic stay!

This was our fourth time at the Post Office, our second year in a row for a full week in June. All the glowing reviews we've posted over the years still hold: it is such a wonderfully located, unique, comfortable space. Bravo!

Peaceful bliss

We stayed in the post office for a week in Maine. The beds are comfortable, the water pressure is good, and the food at the general store next door is awesome! We could have spent a week just at the post office, as lovely as the back yard is! Would absolutely rent again!

Delightful! Quirky! Fun! Comfortable! Relaxing! Welcoming! Great locations! Those are just a few of the ways we would describe the Owls Head Village Post Office. And just to be clear...the actual Post Office in on the first floor with the rental space comprising the 2nd floor, a deck, a ½ size 3rd floor with queen bed, and the cupola with the "tree house" bunk beds. Plus, there's a gorgeous private garden. Our stay began with great communications with Doug (property owner) with recommendations on places to visit, to eat, and how to get the most out of our stay. Added bonus – the Owls Head General Store is next door and, as renters, we got 10% off everything, including outstanding made-to-order breakfasts, pizza, and sundries. If you stay here, don't be confused...your driveway is next to the General Store's outside dining area and everyone was polite and pleasant. The space is great – small galley kitchen with a dorm-style fridge and everything else you need, a deck with gas grill looking over the gardens, dining table, TV area with Apple TV, and a big bathroom that is built out into the main space (sounds odd but it works), comfortable beds, and more owls and heart-shaped rocks than you can count. The private garden is full of flowers, sculptures, a small "pond" with boardwalk, chairs, and another grill, and more. From the rental, it's a quick ride to the excellent Transportation Museum, Rockland, and Camden. We look forward to staying here again!
The main space as seen from the kitchen
The cupola with bunk beds (aka "the tree house") which is all windows and gets warm
The view from the ½ third floor with queen bed looking toward kitchen – ladder/stairs are a bit steep and the "roof" you see on the right is the top of the bathroom (it makes sense when you see it)
The view of the gardens from the deck

WOW! What a wonderful place!!

Amazing landscaping, flower gardens, very unique. Working post office on main level...3 levels of living up above, including the cool cupola added by the owner. Truly in a class of its own. The themed approach (Owls Head, Nautical, USPS), very tastefully done by the owners. We were wowed!! It's unusual that the reality is better than the pictures, but in this case it was far better than anticipated. We wish we had more than 2 nights to enjoy the grounds and star gazing from the deck off the well stocked kitchen! We hope to come back and stay longer to enjoy Owls Head and the Rockland area. Doug was so easy to work with. Highly recommend!!

Owls Head Stay

We had such a lovely holiday at this property. It was everything we wanted for a trip after the busy Christmas season. It comfortably fit our young family of four. The crow's nest was a great hangout for the girls, but was a bit to nervous to let them sleep there (a bit steep for a 3 year old). We have returned home very relaxed after a week of enjoying the best seafood and taking some amazing strolls around nearby scenic areas (it reached almost 60 degrees in January!) Several restaurants and stores are closed around this time of year, but there are plenty still open. We just had do to a bit more research and made sure to make reservations. ALL of the suggestions for food were greatly appreciated and exceptional! We've been to this area before, but missed some of the restaurants suggested. We look forward to returning!

Cozy, quaint and cool

This apartment above the Post Office in the tiny village of Owl's Head is one of the most-unique places we've stayed during our world travels. We were there over New Year's weekend, and in winter things tend to shutdown around here. However, the magnificent solitude and coastal walks out to the beautiful Owl's Head Lighthouse was just what we were looking for as a serene way to welcome in 2024. For such a small place, there's a ton of room in the apartment with a queen bed on the main level and more upstairs. We appreciated the well-stock galley kitchen, where we prepared a NYE feast of fresh local seafood. Off the back is large, elevated deck, which wasn't a great place for sitting in winter, but must be spectacular overlooking the gardens in summertime. Doug was a very helpful, gracious host who checked in via the app to ensure that we had everything we needed, and even let us have a late check out on New Year's Day. We'd highly recommend this lovely apartment, and definitely hope to come back when the weather is warmer.

Quintessentially Owls Head - Perfect Wedding Reception Venue

Our stay was perfect. The photos online are good, but seeing it in person makes you realize how big the space is! Every inch is decorated with trinkets, heart rocks, and of course, owls! The air conditioning works very well downstairs. Pointing a fan up the stairs and keeping the cupola windows open helps with keeping the top floors cool. Being next to the General Store is a huge plus - delicious food and fudge within walking distance when you don’t feel like fighting the hustle and bustle of Rockland! Doug graciously agreed to let us have our wedding reception here after getting married on the beach. He was extremely responsive, gave great local advice, and was even in the gardens the day before we checked in to make everything look good (it looked amazing!!!). The backyard garden was beautiful. It was large, yet intimate, and I couldn’t imagine our wedding reception being held anywhere else. Mosquitos weren’t an issue for me, once the sun went down the beetles came out, but that’s Maine for you! Whether you’re looking for a place to host an event or just wanting to get away, this is absolutely the place to stay.

This property is very nice and has a beautiful garden.I must mention that it has a lot of stairs - 3of4 being ladders. The second story bed room has no closet or other place to keep your clothes. The bed there is only 12-18” from the eave wall making it difficult to access the bed. Because of the location at the intersection of 3 roads, there is some road noise.

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay. The property is delightful, a visual playground as well as being comfortable; everything has been thought of. The outdoor garden was in full bloom and gorgeous with plenty of room to relax or dine. The location is excellent, quiet and peaceful with a small-town grocery store right next door and an historic and scenic lighthouse only a relaxing walk away. Plus the lovely towns of Rockland and Camden only a short drive. Highly recommend!

This was our second day at this property and it was just as lovely as the first. The wonderful hosts bring an artist's eye to everything they do. They are also thoughtful enough to make sure that there’s are extra toothbrushes or razors or other necessities you may have forgotten. The gardens are so beautiful and everywhere you look in the house, there’s something delightful to the eye. The location next-door to the general store and just up the road from the harbor is wonderful. The cleaning service is terrific, too.

We loved our stay at the post office. The apartment is so unique and cozy. My kids really enjoyed the loft bunks, and I did too while reading during a brief rain shower. Amazing! Every detail of the post office was so well thought out! It felt like staying in a cozy house museum. We couldn’t believe the garden area either. My kids never wanted to leave- and are still asking when we can go back. (Just a note- my 3 year old did need to be carried on the stairs due to their ladder-like structure). The kayak access to local islands was also super cool- a very special experience.

The family photo above is from a sunset cruise in Rockland Harbor, on the windjammer 'A Morning in Maine'. My wife and I are both high school art teachers in Massachusetts. We love fixing up old houses and especially love Owls Head Maine!

Why they chose this property

The cottage has a lot of charm and character, decorated with artwork, antiques and treasures found on the beach. We are collectors of everything, specializing on finding heart shaped rocks, driftwood and sea glass found on various beaches close to the Post Office.

What makes this property unique

2, two person kayaks are available to use with this rental. You can dolly them down the hill and launch them next to the Lobster Wharf. Cruise through Owls Head Bay and 5 minutes out to the left is the Owls Head Lighthouse. 10-15 minutes out to the right are two deserted islands to visit and explore. Our favorite is Sheep's Island, which has an expansive sandy beach, which is easy to land on. If your lucky, you will have the entire island to yourselves. The views back to the Camden Hills is to die for!
