About this property

Charmingly renovated 19th Century schoolhouse w/ fire pit. •Dogs stay free!•

Welcome to The Schoolhouse Cottage! Here you will savor calm, relaxation, and solitude within the walls of a beautifully restored two-room schoolhouse built in 1848. This home is not your typical mountain vacation cabin, it is a piece of history that is thoughtfully attended to by the owner between every guest stay. When you walk through the living room and master bedroom you are walking on floors that school children walked on 170 years ago. The photos hanging throughout the cottage are historic images of Dahlonega and North Georgia from an archived collection that you'd be lucky to see anywhere else. What's more, the modern amenities and attention to detail allow you to appreciate the history that surrounds you while still enjoying the comforts of the 21st century. Only ten minutes from the Dahlonega Square, yet tucked away in its own little forest, the Schoolhouse is a unique private retreat that still keeps you close to everything.

The master bedroom (part of the original schoolhouse) has a queen bed, bathroom with shower, and a private screened-in porch accessible through a door that was once the entrance to the original school building. The second bedroom has a full size bed complete with vintage coil box springs. It also has a full-size bath with tub/shower. The living room is also part of the original schoolhouse and has a sofa that folds down (similar to a futon) and can sleep an adult who is no taller than 6'. Bedding and pillow are provided. Guest should be comfortable with stairs.

The Schoolhouse is located in the foothills of the Appalachian mountains minutes from the town of Dahlonega and a variety of North Georgia attractions. It is ideal for those who appreciate a unique and thoughtfully cared for home-base as they venture out to explore the rich history, natural wonders, and local activities in the surrounding area. Get out there and explore! There is so much incredible stuff to see and do!

Finally, please read the full description of the cottage, the amenities (*no cable tv*), and the house rules prior to booking. And if you plan to bring your pup along for your stay you must register him/her as part of your booking party and agree to the pet policy listed below.

My stay at the old school cottage
First off I’d like to say, with this being a renovated old-school house it is truly immaculate; it has everything you need and more. If you don’t stay here and feel like you’re in a classroom with a huge library of reading material all around you then this place is not for you. There is reading material for all ages. There are areas all around the place to cuddle up with one of the many blankets they provide and a good book. I think the best part of my stay was the large back porch off the living room. I would sit there every evening and just listen to the peaceful sounds and the occasional ruffle of the leaves and wonder what furry friend is out there joining me. I saw the occasional deer stroll by and a possum foraging through the leaves looking for a treat. My daughter and her old pup joined me for the first few nights and then the rest of the week I was in total solitude. If you ever want a place to just get away for “me time“ this is the place to stay. Though, this is also a place for family time. There’s a wonderful well lit outdoor area with a fire pit and seating. There is also ample area for playing outdoor games. I can’t forget to mention the wonderful town of Dahlonega and all it has to offer. There are loads of wineries all around to visit and the beautiful Mountain views are breathtaking. This is definitely a place I will return when visiting Dahlonega. Thank you for having us. Linda L.

Lovely place to stay. The home so clean and comfy! The host thought of everything to make your stay perfect. The house was well stocked with the things you sometimes forget so you could continue to enjoy your time without multiple trips to the store. Wonderful Getaway
We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at the schoolhouse. The property was clean and charmingly remodeled. The cabin was well stocked/furnished and secluded enough to feel disconnected on vacation, but about 15 min easy drives from downtown Dahlonega and surrounding vinyards/restaurants. Would stay again for another getaway weekend or trip with another couple.

About the host

Hosted by Callie Wheat

Host profile image
My name is Callie and I grew up in Chattanooga, TN. I've lived in the Atlanta area since 2002. My husband and I have two children and three dogs. I have loved the mountains all my life and fell in love with Dahlonega and the surrounding area about 10 years ago when I made my first trip there. When I was trying to bring friends and family to visit I had a hard time finding available accommodations and it was then that I got the wild idea to become a vacation rental host myself. Since then the vacation rental market has exploded and I find myself to be one of the few hosts with a solitary property who tends to it myself between every booking. With that said, I fully enjoy making my little cottage the best possible experience for each of my guests.

Why they chose this property

My husband and I looked at many, many houses in the Dahlonega area yet I knew from the moment I first stepped foot in the Schoolhouse that this was the place. There was something about it's history and simplicity that reached into my heart and spoke to me. Not only would it be a beautiful and unique vacation cottage for guests but it would also be a perfect sanctuary for my own quiet escapes from the demands of daily life. The previous owners had done the remodeling which made it all the better. I loved perusing antique stores and estate sales as I let the house tell me how to furnish it. There are little changes here and there that I am sure I'll be making over the years but for now I am pleased to share with guests this little cottage in the woods and it brings me immense joy to provide each of them with a wonderful, memory making experience.

I am available via text message and can be at the cottage within an hour upon request.
