About this property

Mendocino Coast Cliffside Cottage—Shangri-La

Shangri-La is the perfect place to relax & renew. Our cottage nests cozily on a high bluff with breathtaking panoramas of the ocean, at the junction of Anderson Valley wineries & the majestic coast. Sit on the deck or take a soak in a hot tub under the stars. A short drive takes you to historic Mendocino village. A Zagat-rated restaurant is steps away!

The cottage is a studio with a full kitchen and bathroom, as well as a private deck with a hot tub. Parking is across a quiet street from the cottage.

A few things to note --

No children under 12 years old are allowed. The cottage is suitable for only one couple.

Bring up to 2 dogs for a $25 fee. Dogs need to be leashed when outside and they cannot be left alone on the premises.

We offer Wifi, but it is provided by a small local company that cannot necessarily restore service quickly if there is an outage (usually caused by storms). So, just a heads up -- it's not an ideal spot for remote work. Verizon generally covers the property though if you are willing to rely on data as a backup.

Perfect getaway
We have been coming to Mendocino for 20 years and this was one of the top places we have stayed. You cannot beat the view (we were able to see whales from the deck!!) We had the best time just hanging out in the cottage and enjoying the sound of the ocean and the stars at night. Can’t wait to go back.

Unbeatable view
Would be 5 stars across the board, except for the terrible sofa. It was so uncomfortable (really old, worn out) that we couldn't even use it. Everything else was really great, and the view is fantastic.

Beautiful Birthday Oasis
This is our second time staying in the cottages at Albion. The view is literally out of this world. It's so peaceful and relaxing to just sit on the patio and watch the waves crash below you. The place is perfect for two people (and in our case two dogs). It's really one of our favorite places to to.

Lovely place with a fantastic view!
The unit was exactly as pictured, super charming with a stove heater and well equipped for 2 people, and with a super private hot tub. The owners are environmentally conscious and add nice touches such a welcome bottle of wine and chilled water cans/metal bottles and “Who gives a Crap” toilet paper and clearly labeled trash and recycle bin under the sink. The unit has several small appliances including a toaster and coffee grinder. We hope to be back again, and will bring a champagne bottle stopper as a gift for the unit, as it was the only thing missing to make it absolutely perfect!!

It all started in 1998 when my mother-in-law gave me (Geneviève) a book of recipes by Margaret Fox where she explain how she opened Café Beaujolais in Mendocino. I like to cook, and I loved both the recipes and the story. My husband, Jonathan, surprised me with a trip to Mendocino and a fine meal at Café Beaujolais to celebrate my birthday… it was fate. For almost two decades, we’d come back to Mendocino every year—sometimes twice a year, to spend time together and enjoy the magic of the Pacific Ocean.
After living and raising our two daughters in Petaluma we decided to move to the Mendocino area--Albion!
I'm a retired nurse; Jonathan, passed away in 2021 and was a writer under the name J.W. Rinzler. I've lived in California for nearly 25 years, but I'm originally from France, and love hosting our two cottages.

Why they chose this property

Because it's one of a kind.

What makes this property unique

Amazing view; private hot tub over looking the ocean, restaurant within walking distance; historical town of Mendocino nearby; hear the birds sing; spot whales; relax.
