Bear Wall'r Bus in the Blue Ridge caters to offroad and outdoor enthusiasts who are looking for comfortable lodging with a camping vibe. We are located near adventure trails such as Hurricane Ridge (Bear Wall'r) & Max Patch, and paved rides such as Hwy. 209 (The Rattler) and Blue Ridge Parkway. We are 25 mins to downtown Waynesville & Maggie Valley, 45 mins to Hot Springs & Asheville. If you like mountain scenery where barns & cows outnumber neighbors, then we're the bus for you.
THE PROPERTY: Bear Wall'r Bus is located in remote Fines Creek, near Max Patch Road. We offer a bunkhouse with 2 twin beds in two separate bedrooms. The bus has a full kitchen with cooking essentials provided, bar and bistro seating, and bathroom with full shower. All cookware and linens are provided. Outside is another hot-water shower, two deck areas, covered motorcycle parking or picnic area, state park grill and fire ring. Trailer parking is also available free of charge.
PRIVACY: The bus is located on appx. 3 fenced acres, mostly surrounded by trees. The bus is secluded enough that you'll have your own private space, especially when at outdoor picnic and campfire areas. We live on the adjoining property but there are so many trees that the only time you'll see us is when we are at the barn, which is on a separate fenced off property--but we're always here to help if you need us.
SURROUNDING AREA & DRIVING TIMES: We are located near adventure trails such as Hurricane Ridge (Bear Wall'r), Harmon's Den & Max Patch, and paved rides such as Hwy. 209 (The Rattler) and Blue Ridge Parkway. We are 25 mins to downtown Waynesville and Maggie Valley, and 45 mins. to Hot Springs and Asheville. From the bus you can be at Interstate 40 exit headed toward Asheville in 15 mins, and the exit toward Knoxville in 10 mins.
CEILING HEIGHT: This is an old school bus and the ceiling is 73" high in the center so guests over 6 feet will need to duck a bit when standing inside the bus. The bedrooms have high ceilings.
WIFI & CELL PHONE SIGNAL: We provide free WIFI Internet. However, it is via satellite and may be temporarily unavailable during extremely foggy weather. Cell signal can be unreliable due to our mountain location--Verizon seems to work the best.
GROCERIES: There is a small old-timey general store nearby but it closes in early evening. Since the nearest grocery store is 20-25 mins. away, we suggest that guests bring along groceries or snacks if they will be arriving late in the day. Driving at night on twisty mountain roads can be a bit nerve-wracking to newcomers.
ALCOHOLIC BEVERAGE PURCHASE: While beer and wine are available in most stores and gas stations, hard liquor is available only in NC state-run liquor stores (ABC Liquor Stores). The nearest one is about 30 mins. away and closes at 9pm.

Very unique experience! Enjoyed all the attention to details and having everything we needed provided. Outdoor shower was a plus. Host was wonderful! Spent one day at Biltmore and one day rafting the Nantahala.
What a wonderful property! Far enough away from everything that all you heard was quiet around the campfire and only 25 minutes from anything you could need (shopping, restaurants, sightseeing, etc). Pennie and Todd were wonderful hosts and thought of everything we could need! Everything was very clean and well maintained… we loved the bus and loved the area… we will be back!
This property was perfect for myself and 3 friends to relax and enjoy the area. Todd and Pennie had everything provided which made our stay extremely easy and allowed for plenty of relaxing time. I highly recommend staying here. It was an experience I will not forget!
We had an amazing time!! The place was clean, creative and fun. The host was super responsive, and thoughtful. It is exactly what we needed, away from the city… listening to the rooster in the morning, taking in all the beautiful landscape. Thank you for your warm hospitality!!
Amazing place. A vision is an understatement. This place is so wonderful. Every single detail was appointed in this place. Very clean and comfortable. Will definitely be back
I absolutely LOVED my stay here! Such beauty, peace, and quiet deep in the Smoky Mountains... and the property itself is a wonderful combination of whimsy and elegance. The hosts have thought of everything one might need or want in its creation. I can't wait to come back!

We're so glad your family had such a good time at the bus. It's all about getting away to the mountains and enjoying the camping vibe without the camping hassle. Hope you'll visit us again.
Merriam-Webster says that Glamping is outdoor camping with amenities and comforts (such as beds, electricity, and access to indoor plumbing) not usually used when camping.
This place is Glamping on steroids! The BearWall'r Bus is an example of artistry that you can be a part of. You will experience Todd and Pennie's utmost thoughtfulness. When they designed this place they truly put themselves in the shoes of their guest and said, "what would I like if I were staying here?"
It's the little things and there are so many little things...
You're going to love it! My wife, two teenage daughters, and I loved it!

Thank you for the kind words, Freddy! Glamping is what we were going for-- the outdoor feel without the outdoor hassle. We're so glad your family enjoyed the space. Hopefully we'll see you again sometime for a mountain getaway.
This was a fantastic place to stay in the mountains! It was a true work of art. There is no detail left undone! The Bear Wall'r Bus is so much fun and inspiring to stay in. You will love every minute when you return from great outdoor adventures that abound in this secluded gem! Todd and Pennie could not be more gracious and welcoming. The beds are comfy and the outdoor grill and camp fire circle round off a perfect getaway. The views are spectacular. It is sure to be our new home away from home. Our 10 year old son will grow up with memories he will never forget. Thanks to these wonderful people who have generously shared this gift with my family.
If you are looking for a true getaway this is the place to go!!! We absolutely loved the outdoor area with the fire ring and picnic table and chairs!! So peaceful and relaxing!! We will definitely be back!!

About the host
Hosted by Pennie & Todd Harris
Born and raised as flat-landers in northern IL and then as residents of central FL for many years, we felt the mountains calling. After vacationing in the rural mountains of western NC, we knew we had to live there. We motorcycle often and the roads and scenery around this area are some of the best in the country.
Todd is also a dual-sport rider who enjoys bike trips with other riders, sometimes with camping gear strapped to their machines. It is from this love of riding and camping that Bear Wall'r Bus was born. What if you could ride to your lodging, have a comfortable bed, and still feel like you're camping? What if all you had to bring was your bike and your clothes? So it is our aim that whether you ride in, trailer in, or don't bring a motorcycle at all, you'll enjoy the beauty and peace of the mountains in a quirky school bus that will make you feel right at home.
Why they chose this property
The Fines Creek area of western NC is the perfect blend of privacy and rustic charm. Instead of the constant noise of traffic or nearby residents, we hear the rushing of the nearby creek, bird song and the lowing of cows. Visiting friends and relatives always comment that "it is so quiet here" or "I haven't heard a car in hours." And the view is always changing: shrouded in mist, setting sun against a faraway slope, the moon rising over the ridgeline. And the stars--no light pollution here. To be here is to be at peace.
What makes this property unique

We are located near adventure trails such as Hurricane Ridge (Bear Wall'r), Harmon's Den & Max Patch, and paved rides such as Hwy. 209 (The Rattler) and Blue Ridge Parkway. We are 36 miles from West Asheville and close to Waynesville and Maggie Valley. If you like mountain scenery where barns & cows outnumber neighbors, then we're the bus and cabin for you. We can even help with motorcycle routes and simple bike repairs, if needed.
