About this property

Large charming Bar Harbor ocean view home.

Located on Mt. Desert Island in the village of Hulls Cove, Twin Gables House is a perfect home base for multi-family or couple groups. Guests can share comfortable common areas with family and friends while enjoying the privacy of a bedroom with its own bath.
One half mile away is beautiful Acadia National Park with opportunities for scenic drives, birdwatching, hiking, biking, rock climbing, etc. Three miles from home is downtown Bar Harbor with its myriad of shops and restaurants as well as whale watching and kayaking tours.

The house dates back to 1890. It served as the home to the families of pastors of the Episcopalian church in the neighborhood for many years. The mid 1980's brought a damaging fire. The renovations were done with a Bed and breakfast in mind the result of which was 7 ensuite bedrooms. Some of the original wood floors were saved albeit a bit worse for wear. Floor to ceiling windows in the living room and dining room add to the charm. A sprinkling of antiques and many original paintings, many by local Maine artists, adorn the premises.
After a busy day enjoying the many area attractions, the comfort of the Twin Gables house awaits you. A comfortable porch with grill and a large backyard lend themselves to cookouts. There is air conditioning available in all the bedrooms as well as the living and dining areas for any hot days you should happen to encounter. There is also Lakewood a short drive away family friendly and perfect for a refreshing dip. Note: Lakewood is in Acadia and you need to display your park pass in your car while you park there.

From the house, at low tide, it is possible to access an expanse of rocky beach which also leads to the popular Chart Room Restaurant - open for lunch and dinner. Just a little further lies the Hulls Cove General Store plus the local post office. The Hulls Cove Visitors Center is just a bit beyond that. It is possible to leave your vehicle behind in our ample parking lot and take the free shuttle bus into Bar Harbor and around Acadia National Park from approximately June 21 until Columbus Day weekend. If you bring bikes you can leave right from the house and get to the park roads and carriage roads from the visitors center. VR124-019

It was a wonderful family reunion from different states. The provisions were outstanding, such as spices, toilet paper, soaps, pots and pans, etc. The location was great for visiting Bar Harbor and Acadia National Park. We created so many memories as a family. The house was well furnished and provided lots of parking. The directions for finding the house need to be more specific.

Excellent home for large groups!

This home is perfect for large group as each bedroom has its own ensuite bathroom. The home is large enough that everyone can have their own space, but also everyone can come together for meals and hanging out together. The host is amazing as well! Would definitely recommend this home!

Family Fall Vacation

Came to Bar Harbor for a Family Fall Vacation. The location of this property was absolutely perfect - just minutes from downtown Bar Harbor and even closer to the entrance to Acadia National Park. There was more than enough space for our family of five. We could have easily had another family of five staying in the house with us.

A great stay in Maine.

Great Location and Well Ppointed

We were a party of 10 adults and had more than enough room. Each room has its own bathroom with a shower which was great and we were able to all sit at the table to eat and play games. While some of the furnishings and decor were dated it was spotless and the TVs were large for viewing sports. The location is wonderful. Two of the nights we were able to walk to dinner. The Chart Room was outstanding. It was five minutes to the park entrance and only a bit further to get to town. I would definitely recommend this for a large group.

Great House-Great location

We stayed here as a family of four. The property is super close to Acadia so if that is a goal, this place is great. It is also very close to bar Harbor which is great too. Our trip included a blend of eating out (Beal’s in Southwest Harbor is awesome) and eating in. The kitchen is very functional and we made good use of the grill as well. There is a decent sized yard as well - made for good frisbee throwing and a nice back porch which faces the yard and grill. All of the rooms have air conditioning. Double laundry in the basement was prime.

Perfect Place for our Family Reunion

This was a wonderful home with private bathrooms to every bedroom which allowed all of us to enjoy each other while having plenty of space for our personal needs. The setting is beautiful: across the street from the ocean and only a few miles into lovely downtown Bar Harbor as well as Acadia National Park. So much to do for individuals and large groups. The owner was very responsive to all my questions before the stay. Can't say enough about this home!

Great for family trip!

The house was perfect for our family vacation. It was very convenient having a bathroom for each bedroom. Everything was very clean. The kitchen has what we needed to prepare meals. Mindy was very easy to communicate with and accommodating of our requests. The location is great with easy access to Acadia and Bar Harbor. We didn't find the road noise to be an issue.

College buddies on their annual national park trip

Great location for visiting Acadia. The home is very well appointed and comfortable. We are a group of 7 “old” college buddies who get together once a year and visit a national park. So the house was perfect for us. There was a nice living room and dining room to gather and have great conversations but we also each had our own space to retire to after the end of the day. Loved the paintings most of which were painted by a local artist.

Great for large groups

We spent about a week here. The house is old and quirky yet well equipped with all the amenities and space for large groups. We got rained out the entire week, however still had a relaxing retreat. It's conveniently located close to the park entrance and Bar Harbor. Word of warning, there are a lot of old books in the house which may affect folks that are dust/asthmatic/allergy prone. Great experience overall!

Perfect for extended families

The thirteen of us stayed in the house from July1-7. Four teenagers in our group and the seven bathrooms were amazing. The house is roomy and has everything you’ll need. Coming “home” to this house after a long day of 4th of July festivities, felt comfortable and like coming home. Some comments on the road noise from Hwy. 3, which is true, so bring a sound machine for sleeping.

Ideal Accommodations!

Our family of 14 (8’adults, 6 kids) thoroughly enjoyed our stay at Mindy‘s house. We loved each having our own room/bathroom and lots of tables to spread out at to enjoy games and eat, The back porch was wonderful! Close to everything we wanted to do from trips to Acadia to downtown Bar Harbor. We enjoyed the well-stocked kitchen! The Hulls Cove beach was just a short walk across the road, and we made daily trips looking for shells and sea glass. Mindy was gracious and quick to respond to our questions. Thank you for a wonderful week, Mindy! We loved it!

3 Families 6 Adults 7 Kids

This property is as advertised. Great location. Very roomy for an older property and there was 13 of us and we never felt cramped at all. It was great all sitting on back porch and plenty of seating inside for dinner. It was nice to have the 2 washers and dryers ,and bathrooms in each room. Mindy even had a new grill ready when I emailed her the week before and said that our group enjoys grilling out. Location was far enough from town to keep it quiet, yet there was general store and small restaurants close enough for kids to walk or ride bikes and grab a bite to eat. Some of the trail to Acadia are close enough to walk/ride bike to since the Hulls Cove visitor center is just up the road. Overall great experience.

Fantastic Family House

We stayed here with our four adult children, two in-laws, and two grandchildren and still had a bed and bath to spare! The hostess was the best to communicate with and despite the age of the home, it was super clean. It is a grand house, with good beds, ensuite baths, and two washers and dryers so you can bring less. The house feels like a lived-in home and is very comfortable for visiting board games, and movie watching. Not to mention grilling, boiling lobster outdoors, and playing whiffle ball in the backyard We cooked several of our meals and found the kitchen to be well-stocked with equipment and a very good dishwasher. (note, get your coffee pre-ground). The location cannot be beat, just outside of the busyness of Bar Harbor. Hull's Cove across the road for shell searching and rock skipping. Be sure and check out the local bookstore within walking distance as well as the breakfast sandwiches and lemon blueberry cookies at the nearby gas station. Sadly, we didn't make it to the Chart Room but it is walkable and well-rated. With that said, the house is on a busy road but set back a little. We had no issues with two young children present and we used the fans, window a/c, or our own white noise app to cover any noise. The comfy beds and good sea air made us sleep so well we didn't notice for long. If we ever get to make this trip again, we will stay here.

A Fantastic Home-away-from-Home!

This charming house was the perfect place for our family gathering. The location was perfect....across the street from Hulls Cove, within a couple of minutes drive to the Acadia National Park main entrance, 5 minutes to the town of Bar Harbor with wonderful whale watching ocean excersions, shops, restaurants, and close to fun little roadside Lobster Boils. We ate lobster everyday! We really enjoyed our Maine vacation. With 5 couples and a couple of kids, the house was great with 7 comfortable bedrooms and a bath attached to each. We lived on the wonderful porch, with lots of seating and shade. They even provided extra folding chairs, which came in handy when we went to the park. It overlooked the big yard and large paved parking area where the little girls had fun with chalk drawings and other games. The house is charming with tiffany lamps and other little touches. The two refrigerators and two washers and dryers were appreciated. I would decribe this house as perfect for a large group or family who love togetherness and each other's company, but do not want to give up their comforts and conveniences. I also appreciated the owner's (Mindy) willingness to answer questions about the area and in working with us. Thank you for the clean, organized home and for making it a memorable and special time for our extended family. You were the perfect hostess. I would recommend this house to everyone!

Reunion 2019

Once a year our family gathers for a reunion. We choose large homes because we love to be together, and since we are senior citizens, we like our own bathrooms. This home was the perfect fit. None of us had been to Bar Harbor and all agreed there was more to do and see there than we ever imagined. We could have used another week. We couldn’t find anything missing in this home. Actually, in our 25 years of renting large vacation homes, this was probably the most complete. Top of the line appliances from large wash machines and dryers to a dish washer so silent that you only knew it was running by the light that came on at the bottom. The best discovery was the propane/sea food pot equipment for a sea food boil. This is a reunion tradition that we thought we would miss because the couple that planned to bring the equipment could not make the trip this year. Like I said, the place has everything. Because our country is so big and our group comes from OR, CA, TX, CO, NC and PA, we try to pick a different spot each year. If ever there was a spot to make us reconsider and revisit a spot, this would be it. Thank you Mindy for allowing us to drop off some things early, and also being available whenever we had a question. You have a beautiful place. Val Bollinger, Nicktown, PA

About the host

Hosted by Mindy Hill

Host profile image
I am a former Vermonter who moved to Mount Desert Island in 1979 at the tender age of 22, shortly after graduating from the University of Vermont. I fell in love with the ocean, the community of Bar Harbor and the park. I spent about 10 years as an over educated waitress at a variety of area restaurants including the Chart Room which was co-owned by my future husband. In 1989 I was able to hang up my waitress shoes and became the host of the Twin Gables Bed and Breakfast. I raised my two children while operating the b & b for 14 enjoyable years. But B & B's are notoriously time consuming so in 2007 we converted the house to a weekly rental and I have enjoyed more free time in the summer for park activities and the like. We summer in our cabin in the woods, about 3 miles from the rental house then move back in to the main house for the winter months.

Why they chose this property

My husband was working for the previous owner of this property when it was damaged in a house fire. The owner, after some consideration, decided to sell the house as is rather than taking on the renovations. Russ (my husband always the entrepreneur, saw it as a perfect spot for a B&B and the renovations gave us the perfect opportunity to add the private baths that B&B travelers so appreciate. Update: My husband passed away in 2020. I am fortunate that my son is able to assist me with the house and yard upkeep.

What makes this property unique

Probably my two favorite parts of the house are the kitchen window that has views of the ocean (though not as good in the summer as they use to be due to foliage growth) and the back porch which is open air and a wonderfully pleasant place to hang out in the summer. I find the location very convenient.
