About this property
Classic Westside Farmhouse w/ Fruit & Water View on 10 acres with AC and Hot Tub
Our peaceful retreat can be a haven for a long weekend or a week-long stay on Vashon Island, just 15 or 20 minutes from Seattle or Tacoma by ferry. We have a 24 hour period between each guest stay for cleaning and sanitizing. This summer, we also have two portable AC units for hot days and our hot tub is open and ready for a soak at the end of the day.
We have availability for folks looking to take a break or work remotely. We have excellent wifi and Internet resources combined with the relaxing feeling of “being away from it all.” A recent guest said "This was the first time I experienced the true Vashon experience even though I have visited the island many times."
Drive-up our long, quiet drive, open our gate to privacy, peace, fruit, and contemplation available for two people to four couples. Three night minimum and week-long rentals available at our beautiful craftsman home on one of the last full original 10 acre homesteads from the 1920's located on Vashon Island's west side with park-like landscaping and a view of water and Olympic Mountains. Entire home, three historic barns, and property are yours!
Arts and crafts 1922 farmhouse in excellent condition with original features. Four bedroom, 1.5 bath, updated kitchen and two family rooms for vacation rental or as weekend stay as part of your wedding. Lounge on our lovely sunny front porch for breakfast and enjoy beautiful sunsets on the back porch in the evening. Situated on a 10 acre farm with western exposure. Exquisite landscaping, gardens and apple, cherry, pear and plum orchard around home, most of the land is in pasture grass. Water view (Colvos Passage) and peek-a-boo view of the Olympic Mountains. 2 car garage available. Pasture and fields available for walks.
House and garden are available also as a wedding venue for wedding party dinners, venue only, or stay the whole weekend and host your wedding at the house, barns and gardens for up to 50 guests. Pricing for this is separate from accommodation.
Blue Sky Vashon is in a perfect location to enjoy Vashon Island. It is 10 minutes from the northern ferry dock to and from Seattle. It is about five minutes from the quaint and fun downtown of Vashon itself, home of great restaurants, gift shops and the movie theater as well as the downtown Saturday Farmer's Market. It is a wonderful location to start a bike ride on Westside Highway or take the ferry to Tacoma and venture two hours to Mount Rainier National Park to the east or two hours to the Olympic range or peninsula National Park to the west for amazing hiking.
The farmhouse was built in 1922 and its original fir floors and wavy glass windows are still intact. The lower floor includes a big light sitting area with breakfast nook and eat-in kitchen with all new appliances, dishwasher, and central island. Extras include new blender and a breakfast basket, typically with a selection of bars, oatmeal, coffees and teas. Walk through the open plan living room and dining room and eat your breakfast on the big old fashioned front porch with a view east and lovely morning sun. On the east side of the lower floor is the open living room and dining room with plenty of comfy seating for four to six people. There is an extra bedroom/home office on this floor with a couch/double bed, desk, and the half bath. Wifi and internet access are available through-out the house and outside close to the house.
Upstairs you can chose between three nice sized bedrooms each with full or queen beds, windows that open onto views of the garden and larger property. All bedrooms have new pull down shades for privacy and better sleep.
The front bedroom is the smallest with a full bed, but it has arguably the best view out the front of the house and to the east. The master has its own AC unit in the summer and looks south and west to the water view. The north bedroom is the most quiet with a peak-a-boo view of the Olympic range and the sunset. It also has its own AC unit in the summer but they are also rollable.
Each bedroom has a large, cedar-lined closet with plenty of hangers. Each bed is new with IKEA linens and new duvet comforters which are fluffy and comfortable. Some of our review comments include "sleeping on clouds" and "very comfortable."
The full bath is on the 2nd floor with an old fashioned claw-foot tub and a modern shower along with plenty of towels and a basket of supplies should you have forgotten anything. The view is amazing from the bathroom window looking west to the water and the Olympic mountain range. On clear days, you can see many of the mountains. The sunsets are gorgeous.
To top it off, at the end of the day, you can wander down and soak in the hot tub off the back porch. It is on our circular patio surrounded by privacy trees with a view to the east and west. We have it set at outside temperatures as it has been a hot summer, but it makes for a refreshing plunge after a hot day in the summer.
Relax! This property is so peaceful. The main sounds are the many birds and the family of bald eagles living in the trees along the bluff. We also rent this property for small group and spiritual retreats, which is a testament to the quiet and restfulness of the house and surrounding garden. You can walk the entire property to see the arboretum of unique trees or just sit and enjoy the sunset.
Sometimes the input from another guests says it best. Here are the comments from a Bay Area guest who stayed for two weeks last June with his family:
“A slice of heaven is insufficient to describe Blue Sky Farm on Vashon Island. It might just be the whole dang pie. And speaking of pie; if you bring supplies to make a crust, there is no shortage of pie cherries to be picked in late June to make one yourself. There are also bing cherries dangling from gorgeous tree just beside the house you can see from almost every room. Many of the resident birds (we identified nearly two dozen species on the farm alone) also eat to their hearts’ content. But that’s not a problem. There are plenty to go around. This is the land of abundance. And harmony. And tranquility. And in the late summer and early fall, it’s evidently the land of apples. We just happened to be too early to enjoy them. We stayed for two weeks at the end of June and we are already plotting our return. Tilda’s hospitality and attention to detail are second to none. She was such a pleasure to communicate with and was always prompt to reply. We loved our walks among the wide array of mature trees dispersed throughout the property. The sunsets over Colvos Passage were majestic from the back porch. From upstairs you can catch a glimpse of the Olympic Mountains. Everything here exudes charm — from the bird mural in the stairwell, to the stained glass in the bathroom, to the aging, but by no means dilapidated, barn, stable and studio buildings that dot the landscape. As a photographer, I was never able to find a bad angle. The farm is just a short drive from town where there are plenty of dining and shopping options. It’s also nearby a number of gorgeous parks, beaches and trails. On the island, you are never more than five minutes from a public space where you can take in nature. Our favorite hike was at Burton Acres which featured older second growth trees and gently graded trails. KVI was our favorite beach to visit but Fern Cove felt like a private nature preserve. Try to time your beach visits for low tide and bring some sandals or boots. Tilda supplies a superb local guide book that details all of the beaches and trails the island has to offer and how to get to them. If you are looking for somewhere to be rejuvenated, discover peace and experience what heaven might actually be like, look no further than Blue Sky Farm.”
Thank you, Jonathan.
Hope you will visit Blue Sky Farm and Vashon Island soon.

About the host
Hosted by Tilda Brown Swanson

We are based in and split our time between Seattle and Iowa.
We have loved Vashon for at least 20 years and have owned Blue Sky Farm for over 18! We live in the house for at least a month a year and hope to show guests a sense for Vashon life during their stay.

Why they chose this property
The westside of Vashon Island is the most mild and beautiful part of the island. The fruit grows best there and having both eastern and western light is a special treat. The farm is unusually peaceful. The light is particularly beautiful during the "golden hours" from 4 or 5 pm to 9 pm in the summer.
Our gardens are in a beautiful cottage (read "messy and a bit random") style and will delight visitors, especially if you are a plant and flower lover. If you like fruit, we have over 20 apple trees, eight plum trees, a peach, four to five pear, Asian pear, and six different cherry trees. My favorites are the tart pie cherry trees in late June for jam, pies and scones!
If you love birds, this is a bird's paradise with a variety of habitats consistent with the grasses, woods and flowers of the Pacific Northwest. My favorite is to hike west to the bluff and then explore the NW corner to the second bluff where our resident Barred Owl and hawks live.

What makes this property unique
Not many of the original homesteading acres of land stand on Vashon as they were in 1910 when a person or family could stake out a strip of 10 acres on the westside, build a dwelling on the land and after five years there, pay a fee for the certificate to own the land. We are the fourth owners of the 10 acres at our address. The first owners, the Reiners grew fruit and had cows on our farm from around 1910 through the 1940's. As the fourth owners, we work to be good stewards of the land, caring for the fruit trees, which include some of the originals.
The barn on the property are each historic in different ways. The main barn was built in 1930. We have just replaced its cedar shake roof, restoring it in its original style and build. The floor is Douglas Fir. It held hay in its upper floors and equipment on its right-hand side. The barn below it was a garage in the 1920's and 1930's and then a chicken and turkey barn. Its unique northside is all windows. The third barn is a two-horse stable with a unique roofing style of the early 1900's for airflow.
The property's inner two acres contain an arboretum of interesting and unique trees as well as garden beds of greenery and color. The property has a rich history and is in one of the most beautiful locations on the island. We live in our house on Vashon about a month a year. We rent our farm so that we can make it available for no or low cost for spiritual and pastoral retreats. It has special qualities which make for a relaxing and peaceful time for all who stay here.
During the pandemic, we booked reservations with at least one day between guests so that we could deeply clean and disinfect between guests to give our guests peace of mind and make our house a haven for each stay. We have continued that approach.
