About this property

Open, cozy studio apartment getaway!

A studio/efficiency apartment located on the lower level of a house built in 2020.

We're in the beautiful, peaceful southern Appalachian Mountains. The space has one main/great room and a separate bathroom; lots of natural light and an outdoor patio. A great getaway that's still within 15-40 minutes of much to do. It's entirely self contained with a separate entrance.

The community (High Cove) is equidistant from the towns of Bakersville, Burnsville and Spruce Pine, NC, each within 20 minutes. It's also convenient to Penland School of Craft (15 minutes), and about 40 minutes from Mt. Mitchell, the highest point east of the Mississippi. Spending a day in Asheville is also an option; it's a tourist friendly town with shopping, restaurants, music, and more; 1 hour away.


The area was heavily impacted by hurricane Helene in September 2024 and the space was provided to volunteers here to help. It was reactivated in mid 2025.

PLEASE NOTE: we are located on wooded land in a very safe, quiet, rural setting. Getting to the house requires traveling on a gravel road for about 2/10ths of a mile.

Great studio apartment

This rental is terrific -- clean, quiet, and out in the country but with friendly neighbors. I stayed here while taking part in a workshop at Penland. The location was convenient, just 20 minutes from campus. I'd definitely stay again.

This is a cute little cabin on the top of a small mountain. The surrounding area is quiet and a lovely get away from the bustle of daily life. The host has several thoughtful things like great directions to get to the cabin, a discount membership card to the grocery store in the area, some misc spices/teas/etc. The place was clean and safe. My only issue was I am a light sleeper, and the mechanical room with the hot water heater and well pump was right on the other side of the wall. The system also backwashed every night at 3 am. It was very noticeable anytime any of that ran day and night. Also, the insulation between the host's living space on the second floor and the rental was not good. He was not a particularly noisy person and kept to himself, but I could clearly here him walking around, dragging chairs, dropping things, etc.I had 2 nights of pretty fitful sleep until I started running the vent a hood on turbo all night long. That helped me a ton. A person that was less of a light sleeper might not have any issues.

Thanks Heather. I appreciate the feedback. I understand that noise - for people who are especially light sleepers - can be an issue, and I apologize. But there are reasons for everything you site and limited options for ways to mitigate it. The water treatment requires back-washing (which happens every 2-4 days, not nightly) is the price I pay for having clean, clear, healthy drinking water. I'm on a community well and the treatment removes the high iron content. As for the water pump, it comes with expecting and maintaining good, constant water pressure. No pump, very low water pressure. When it runs, it's for 20-30 seconds. I will look into any additional soundproofing I could add. As for structural noise between the upper and lower levels, I've already added as much insulation and isolation as is reasonable and try to be as quiet as I can. I'm sorry for the inconvenience and hope the rest of your stay went well.

A real get away

This was a nice place for getting away and unwinding. Like everything in the Smoky Mountains, the route there is windy and curvy. But it’s a quiet small neighborhood once you arrive.

Cozy place, centrally located to great outdoor activities!

Kevin was a fantastic and hospitable host. He made me feel welcome amongst his friends and spent time conversing with me about himself. The location was beautiful and central to many hikes I had planned; Carvers Gap, Mt Mitchell and Linville Gorge. The studio apartment itself was everything I needed, a nice bed, warm shower and full kitchen. I would definitely come back!

Great for one person or a couple.

Host (Kevin) was nice and very helpful. The property is one well-equipped room on the ground floor with with a galley kitchen and a nice bathroom with a shower. Amenities include on demand hot water, great water pressure, and a washer/ dryer. There is no TV, but wifi is fast and reliable. The property is located in an artist’s community called High Cove which is nestled among beautiful rolling hills. Penland is 15 minutes away. I enjoyed my stay.

I work for myself as a semi-retired voice actor, and also an active volunteer for multiple organizations. I've traveled a great deal and know what I look for in a good host. I provide the same to my guests.

This is a perfect place to get away. It's simple, comfortable, quiet, requires no-maintenance, connected to hiking trails ... and still only 15 minutes to an hour away from so much to do.
