A World Apart
About A World Apart
I've had a love for the Smokies throughout my life. Annual retreats to their splendor, beauty, and peace have been a part of my life since I was a small child. When I need a reprieve from the sometimes hectic 'normal' life that I head to the bosom of these old mountains. Just one breath of cool, crisp morning air seems to put everything back in its proper place. I hope you too can find a little of that mountain magic. --Brien, Charlotte, NC
A World Apart purchased this Cabin in 2008
Why A World Apart chose Maggie Valley
The name “A World Apart” came quite easily standing on the porch one early evening. After your visit I hope you’ll understand why... The land on which A World Apart sits has been in the family for a few decades. The cabin was started in 1985 and was literally built board by board by one person. It was a quiet retreat and went through numerous design changes and additions, but the interior was never completed (some would say it was never started). With its lack of insulation, few exposed frame walls, and roughed in plumbing and electrical, it was a fun place for getaways where no one could find you. In 2006, after many years of the cabin sitting desolate, I purchased the property. That set off a two year adventure of weekly drives to the property, more Lowes trips than I ever thought possible, and a frustrating and painstakingly slow yet rewarding process of reworking and completing the interior of the cabin and bringing it up to current building code. The majority of the work was done by my family including all the framing, electrical, heating and air, insulation, cabinetry, tile work, flooring and stairs (which was milled from red oak trees from my primary house), and too many other details to recall them all. It was a labor of love that nearly broke me in so many ways. We tried to pull from the best of the cabins we had visited around the Smokies and at the same time, add a little of our own flair and style. I am quite pleased with the result and have been rewarded by the many kind words and stories from guests.
What makes this Cabin unique
It’s all about location! The cabin sits just a few minutes West of Maggie Valley and Cataloochee Ski Resort. The Blue Ridge Parkway runs along the back side of the mountain. Even being so close to these amenities it feels as though you are on a quiet hiking trail in the middle of the Park. The 5.5 acres is surrounded on all sides by vacant properties so that there is literally no other sign of civilization within your view. The only sounds are the wind through the trees, the creek running through the hollow below, and nature living the way it was intended.

Suggestions to better thecabin
Everything was great except needs new mattress in master bedroom and tv remotes need directions. Thank you for a wonderful cabin! Mary Purvis
Great location; Cozy cabin; Tricky drive
This is a well-kept, cozy cabin. The kitchen was well-stocked and the appliances and heating all worked well. Our kids really enjoyed the pool table.
We left a day early because it was supposed to rain all night and most of the next day, and we were nervous about our minivan being loaded down and slipping on the mud on the private section of the drive. Also the gravel road is very bumpy in places (needs grating?), and that added to our concerns.
We left a note with some items that need attention, hopefully these have been addressed:
- Upstairs vanity sink did not drain
- The outside motion light was not working, and the porch light was very dim. Thus, the outside lighting is not sufficient. This made it very uncomfortable to be outside the cabin at night. Some good lighting would really help. Even if the motion light were functioning, I feel like it wouldn't be enough.
- The cabin is well-decorated and furnished. I assume this is wonderful for a couple on a weekend getaway. For a family of 5, however, we found it difficult to make room for our things.
- The sofabed was very comfortable! There was a strong draft, though, coming from under the door (dining room) and maybe the fireplace too? So it was cold to sleep in that room.
Overall, we did really enjoy our time, and the proximity to Maggie Valley was great for all the activities and outings.
Everything we expected and enjoyed the Cabin and availability to communicate with Tricia. Only bad review would be the road to Cabin but overall worth the seclusion.
Wonderful property. Very well provisioned Road a little scary. Did not have a 4 wheel drive vehicle.
Nice & Cozy!
My wife and I had an amazing stay at the (A World Apart property). The owners made everything super easy. The cabin had everything we needed to make our stay fantastic.
We truly enjoyed our stay,
