Cute and cozy
Normal Heights is hopping, but this clean, well appointed house is close enough to be fun yet far enough away to be calm and quite. The back porch is very inviting. Close to a grocery store, pharmacy, a variety of restaurants (Roberto's Tacos), and coffee shops.

Updated Normal Heights
We enjoyed our stay and appreciated the cleanliness, attention to detail, the pots, dishes, towels and linens, TV and wi-fi, the new appliances and the small touches, like the wine, spices and laundry detergent. Obviously a lot of thought (and money) went into making the space comfortable. But there are a few items (which we are not complaining about) which might improve the experience in the future. Lighting could be brighter in the living room, the door to the hall bath has no lock, the middle bedroom door won’t stay closed, the router (or whatever else is in the middle bedroom closet) is so loud the portable heater had to be kept on to mask it. We understand that central heating is not a priority in San Diego, but turning multiple small heaters on and off and waiting for them to do the job was a minor chore. The king beds were great to sleep in, but were too big for the small rooms – queens better. And lastly, the rules. We are landlords ourselves and understand the need to protect property. But we think you err on the side of too many rules, like listing prices for missing items and threats of eviction for certain transgressions. It’s the opposite of the welcome feeling you clearly want to instill. All that said, it was perfect for us and we will most likely be back.

Wanted to love it but it feel a bit short
The house is cute and the location is great. It felt safe and there is a nice neighborhood center really close. The house itself could have been a bit cleaner which was disappointing considering they literally send you the check in code at 4pm. The house is small and cozy and the kitchen is well stocked with stuff. We stayed over the holidays so it was nice to be able to cook family meals and not have to buy any equipment. That being said the house is cluttered with unnecessary furniture and Knick knacks. The small rooms have chairs in them and there’s barely space to walk around the bed. There was literally Knickknacks on every surface too, which with young kids was annoying because I had to move everything then replace it before we left. The part that was really the factor for the lack of 5stars is their rules and signs everywhere. I get it you want people to respect your house and follow rules but the signs, labels and rudely phrased warnings everywhere felt intrusive and gave you the feelings of being monitored by a mean school teacher. It’s just unnecessary. As much as I liked the location and the house it cute I wouldn’t stay again.

Great House & Owners, Potentially Dodgy Neighborhood???
The home is nicely updated, super clean, had tons of amenities, and the owners are extremely responsive and friendly. The neighborhood is close to the freeway, gas stations, Balboa Park, restaurants, a Vons Supermarket, and many other businesses that were convenient. It was a little alarming when we arrived to see bars on the doors and windows of businesses and gang tags spray painted on buildings as we drove through the neighborhood. I will say most of the homes were well maintained, we felt safe in the house, and in the short amount of time we were actually at the house (we were sight seeing every day for 6 days), we saw joggers, families walking with strollers, and tons of people walking their dogs at all times of the day...so maybe it is not as dodgy as it appeared...but it did put us on high alert. Another reviewer mentioned it not being a nice neighborhood but I did not see any other reviewers commenting on it, so I thought maybe she had higher standards than the average person. So, I am sharing our first impressions in case this is important to you. Overall, we had a fantastic time in San Diego and really appreciated how the owners went above and beyond to make sure we were comfortable at the house and felt welcomed. They really do go the extra mile to make your stay memorable. Thank you!

About the host

My husband any myself are San Diego natives. We are both real estate brokers. We are in love with our one and only grand baby, however she’s not much of a baby anymore :) We have a grown daughter who also works in the real estate industry and our college age son is working on his digital film production degree. We love to travel and real estate flipping is our passion, so buying and renovating then ‘holding’ a short term vacation rental seems to be the perfect ‘fit’ and natural progression of business for us. We also love our city and get around quite a bit, especially in the central part of the city. We are ‘foodies’ (who isn’t?!) and love a good “margarita” here and there! We hope you enjoy Casa Monroe, it truly has been a labor of love and we are hoping you will be back!

Aloha and all the best to you and yours! Happy Traveling (Website hidden by Airbnb) Chris & Francesca
