About Steven and Sue Matz
We moved to Bryson City in 2002 when we bought a whitewater rafting business on the Nantahala River! Wow, we had no idea what a surprise we were in for! We recently sold the business but would not dream of moving away from Bryson City! The Great Smoky Mountains are just gorgeous. We feel thankful everyday that we get to live in such a beautiful part of the country. We love it so much that we decided to extend the opportunity for others to explore the area and make wonderful vacation memories in our cabin! There is so much to do or it's just a perfect place to relax. We live in the area so we don't stay in our cabin often but when we do it still takes our breath away! We hope you come and enjoy this special place that we call home.

Why Steven and Sue Matz chose Bryson City
We fell in love with this cabin because of its full log build! The cabin is truly a cabin; inside & out. The seclusion it offers with long range mountain views make this home extremely enjoyable and a true feeling of getting away from it all! We just love it and are happy to share it with you!
What makes this Cabin unique
Total peacefulness happens when you arrive at Sophie's Choice! It lives large and gives the perfect mountain feel. We named it Sophie's Choice after our daughter.

New Year's at Sophie's Choice
Overall, Sophie's Choice is a very nice mountain cabin, with long range views (at least in the winter when the leaves are off the trees). The rooms are large and the cabin is quite spacious. The home is furnished well, and things are marked well. The hot tub is right outside of the master and is quite loud at times (not sure if it was heating or recycling motor). Also, as other guests have mentioned, there is no sound proofing between the master bedroom and the bedroom directly above it. As many have stated, the road can be a bit of a challenge and I would not want to have to try to arrive for the first time after dark. The location is a short ride out of Bryson City, which is a nice central location for several good hiking trails and visits to other charming mountain towns such as Sylva, Dillsboro, Franklin and Robbinsville. Guests should know that you are in the country, and neighbors tend to let their dogs run (which chased our car each time we came or went), and on two days when we were at the cabin during the day, we heard gunshots very close by. Personally, I would not have wanted children running around outside. It should also be noted that you must take your trash with you when you leave, and while there is a waste center a few miles away, it is closed on Saturdays and Sundays, so if you are checking out on the weekend, you may find yourself carrying your trash home, or at least a good ways home until you can find an open dump site or garbage container at a rest area where you can legally dispose of it.
Sophie's Choice is a true log cabin build which means there is no "built-in insulation" between floors. There is an oversized area rug that covers most of the upstairs bedroom floor which does help act as a noise barrier. The directions to the cabin (which are sent prior to arrival) include written directions, as well as, pictures to help you locate Sophie's Choice. We also welcome our guests to call us as we know they are in "unknown" territory; We are always happy to assist. The cabin is secluded and nestled on 5.6 acres, at the end of the road, allowing you privacy and peace of mind. Sophie's Choice is in a rural community that does not offer trash pick-up. While it may seem a little inconvenient, the "ruralness" offers great benefits. To ensure that our guests are prepared, trash information is provided in the Cabin Instructions (emailed prior to arrival) and are also posted inside the cabin for reference. "Garbage and Recycling: There is a large garbage can on the back deck to store garbage until you can get to the dump. The garbage dump is easily accessible. The dump site/recycling center is on Highway 19 (conveniently located between cabin and main road ~ driving directions are included). Please make sure all trash is taken to the dump prior to check-out. The local sanitary station for disposal of your garbage does not open until 1:00p.m. on Sundays. If you are checking out on a Sunday, please put any remaining trash in the big black trash bin on the back porch with its lid closed. " We strive to allow our guests to have a wonderful get-a-way in the Appalachian/Great Smoky Mountains so that they leave feeling relaxed, refreshed, and ready to return! We welcome you to come and experience the beauty of Sophie's Choice Cabin.
