About this property

Rustic retreat with panoramic views, tropical gardens, & biodynamic produce!

Pu'u O Hoku Ranch offers a unique getaway for travelers seeking a rustic retreat. You can hike, swim, stargaze, surf, and see a working ranch in action. Pu'u O Hoku is one of the few places in the islands where you can feel Hawaii as it once was. The Sunrise cottage is just a short drive from the black-sand beaches of Halawa Valley.

On the hill above the bustle of the ranch, surrounded by tropical gardens, with panoramic windows offering views over the bluffs to the ocean, the Sunrise Cottage is perfect for romantic getaways or small groups. Master bedroom with a queen bed, second bedroom with two twins, spacious living and dining room, fully-equipped kitchen, two bathrooms, and a shaded lanai.

The Sunrise cottage was built in the 1930s in a classic Hawaiian ranch style, furnished with Balinese and Hawaiian wood and textiles. The cottage is off the grid and runs on renewable energy, the water onsite is from our well.

We can also deliver fresh biodynamic and organic produce as well as fresh beef and venison to your cottage for you to cook during your stay!

From the moment we booked, Nani had our back, answering every question with patience and making sure we were completely taken care of.We came out for a hunt, and that’s where the magic really kicked in. Josiah and Baeo were outstanding guides. Professional, knowledgeable, and funny enough to keep us laughing even while hiking through the brush. They turned the experience into more than just a hunt, it felt like an adventure with old friends.Between the stunning views, the peaceful gardens, and the nonstop good vibes, this place is something special. We already know one thing for sure: we’ll be back for round two.

Beautiful authentic stay

This is a charming and unique setting on the Pu’u O Hoku ranch. We enjoyed bird watching , watching the sunrise from the cove in the Halawa Valley, and exploring the lush landscape.

Lovely Long Weekend

It's the perfect place to get away for some pleasant cabin weather for books, board games, and yard games with the family. Our daughters (6 & 7) had a great time with the garden tour and horseback riding, and Halawa beach is a short drive away.

Secluded Oasis for Quiet Vacation Relaxation

The cottage at the ranch is a lovely and quiet getaway on the east side of Molokai. It has beautiful views of the hillsides and huge windows to feel immersed in the natural beauty of the island. The kitchen, bathroom and cottage itself are well stocked and comfortable for all you need. Grab some groceries in town, hike the ranch, take a horseback ride and enjoy!

Great Stay on Molokai

Truly a wonderful holiday destination. The ranch is the best place to stay on Molokai and we cannot recommend Sunrise Cottage on Pu'u O Hoku Ranch highly enough. Nani was so kind from the initial email in January. We arrived at a clean, beautifully appointed cabin filled with locally grown floral arrangements and a refrigerator supplied with a bag of produce grown on the ranch, eggs (the best we have ever eaten!) from the ranch, beef from cattle at the ranch and fruit grown on the ranch. What a delicious treat and we did our best to eat it all and had to get more eggs. Beds super comfortable, great walking trails all around the ranch. Cannot recommend enough the garden tour with Ahiku, horseback riding with Sarah, the store employees Nadia and Cathy, and everyone we encountered at the ranch -- just awesome people, proud of their job, the ranch and their island. We just loved our stay and hope to return.

Lovely get away from it all spot

Was on a mom daughter trip and went to a yoga retreat at the lodge. It was lovely to stay at the Sunrise Cottage and live simply for five nights. Best to buy your groceries in the small town by the airport as there is not much out there. There can be mosquitoes so bring bug spray. Beds were comfortable and great water pressure! I brought some more light to do and laundry as there are no laundry facilities on site. Would definitely stay there again on the island.

Serene Weekend!

We enjoyed our stay very much, the location and cabin were absolutely beautiful! Unplug and refresh in nature here. It is an hour drive from the airport/town area so plan accordingly and arrive in daylight hours. The road goes down to one-lane, I wouldn't want to navigate it at night for the first time. Our flights were in the afternoon so we missed the opportunity for tours and the store so go early if you wish to see them. The waterfall and sunrise hikes were the highlight of our weekend.

Tranquil peaceful serene hill under the stars.

This cottage was perfectly set up the cliffs with surround sound ocean and wind. The cool evening air and clear skies makes for a stargazer’s dream, along with the delight of the frogs’ serenade. I ordered ranch beef, fruit, and vegetables for the cottage which was not only delicious but also fed me the entirety of my stay. What is most memorable though are moments spent with Molokai Hawaiians who work at the farm and ranch and others across the island who were all so generous in sharing their histories, culture, knowledge, and kindness with me.

Pu'u O Hoku - Sunrise Cottage

What a special place! We spent a week calling the Sunrise Cottage home and loved every minute of it. While the cottage has all the essentials needed, we applaud the simplicity of the space. It allowed us to connect without all the distractions of our normal lives. Our senses were stimulated every day with beautiful sights and sounds of nature. The wonderful fruits and vegetables that the farm provided were so fresh and tasty. Thanks to the Rudy and his team for allowing us to hike on the property. I'm not sure if I would ever experience such natural beauty again. The people at the ranch and store were so friendly and helpful. I appreciate them for showing such hospitality. In my opinion, this is a must stay destination!

A Unique Place to Stay

Pu'u O Hoku Ranch, where Sunrise Cottage is located, is about a 50 minute drive from Kaunakakai, the town in central Moloka'i. The last 5 miles or so of the drive is on a one lane road. It's a beautiful drive, but windy. It's definitely not recommended to drive at night; there's more than one hairpin curve to navigate. There are screens on the windows so we were able to leave them open throughout the night. We did not leave the front door open as there is a gap at the bottom of the screen door which would basically invite the geckos in. To our delight we found a generous bag of freshly picked produce (see photo) awaiting us on our arrival. It was too bad that we couldn't know what the produce would include as it turned out we ended up with duplicates of bananas, potatoes and green beans since we brought groceries prior to the drive there. The description of hearing the "roar of the ocean" was not completely accurate. Our view out the living room windows (see photo) were of the valley; the ocean wasn't not close enough to hear it. Ants were a problem in the kitchen and bedroom. There is no garbage disposal. The kitchen had the necessary small appliances, except no microwave oven. There isn't any condiments for cooking; you basically have to bring everything in, even cooking oil and salt and pepper. Lots of large windows in the DR and LR allow for unobstructed views of the valley. In the evenings, you'll spot a few geckos clinging the outside of the windows

Absolutely top notch property. Exceptional Art & furnishings. The horseback tour was excellent with Buszy & Kaweki with a nice waterfall view from an excellent horse instructor Sarah. The hospitality crew of Nani & Lauren keep us informed from the booking and was able to accommodate our plant based diet. The views of the sacred kukui forest to the vast ocean views and the amazing sunrises. We will be back 100.

Beautiful Relaxing Stay

We had a lovely time relaxing in and around the property. It wasn’t at all inconvenient to explore Molokai from the ranch and we loved the winding road along the coast. The rustic elegance of the Sunrise Cottage was perfect and the addition of fresh vegetables, ground venison, and ripe bananas made the cottage feel just like home. It was a beautiful relaxing stay for us. Mahalo for your hospitality.

Outstanding retreat

My wife and i spent 4 nights/5 days here and absolutely loved it. Hit a local grocery store on the way in and you really never need to leave this wonderful little bungalow, other than to pick up some dried apple bananas and other snacks at the nearby ranch store. Everyone was incredibly friendly and we had 4 of the most incredible sunrises! Take a nice book or two and some hiking shoes and escape the rat race with this beautiful slice of old Hawaii! Can’t wait to go back!

About the host

Hosted by Pu'u O Hoku Office

Host profile image
Pu'u O Hoku Ranch is a family-owned biodynamic and organic ranch and farm, rustic retreat center, and sublime getaway on the remote and tranquil east end of Molokai, Hawaii. “Pu'u O Hoku” is true to its Hawaiian name — which means “Hill of Stars”— surrounded by more than 14,000 acres of protected land, immersed in the transcendent beauty of forest, sky and ocean.

Why they chose this property

Our most important work at Pu’u O Hoku is to restore the ‘aina (land in Hawaiian) of our beautiful ranch, from its green pastures that run up from coastal fishponds to Halawa Valley and the sea cliffs that tower above it. We are working on the reforestation of the ahupua’a (or watershed) and reducing the number of deer and pigs in our forest, as well as the sustainable cultivation of our arable lands in order to realize a bountiful land economy. We believe that Pu’u O Hoku, by preserving the fertile east end of Molokai, has a special role to play in bringing the island closer to a food and energy self-sufficient community that can provide for generations to come.
