The Neighborhood: Aside from being host to the United States Congress, Capitol Hill is the largest historic neighborhood in Washington DC. Stretching from the East Front of the United States Capitol, it is one of the oldest residential communities in the nation. Capitol Hill is the center of Washington, DC and the Eastern Market neighborhood is the heart of Capitol Hill. From our historic townhouse, the sidewalk cafes, restaurants, Miracle Theater, and lively nightlife of Barracks Row are a five minute walk. One block away, the Hill Center at the Old Naval Hospital showcases art galleries, performing artists and intimate events with national newsmakers. Two blocks further, an enclosed playground includes sculptures and a large splash pad - perfect for kiddos! The star of the neighborhood is the Eastern Market itself, which is about an 8 minute walk from the home. The 19th-century brick building is open daily with a wide range of stalls selling fresh food, local produce, art and crafts, fresh flowers, baked goods, candles, to artisan cheeses and unique DC souvenirs. It is a perfect place to find a little something to remember your trip. The weekend market on Saturday & Sunday is not to be missed with artists and street vendors outside selling crafts, memorabilia, artwork, pottery and unique gifts! Capitol Hill Books, located right in the middle of the market, is our personal favorite pre-owned bookstore. It's cramped with towers of books from floor to ceiling - magical!
Getting Around: The closest metro is Eastern Market which is under a 4 minute walk from the property with quick access to stops across the city. You're also a very short walk, bus, metro or Uber ride from a number of other neighborhoods not to be missed including The Wharf, Chinatown, Gallaudet University, and the Navy Yard. Baseball fans will love the quick access to the Washington Nationals stadium at the Navy Yard. In addition, we are 1-3 blocks away from several Capital Bikeshares and bus lines, including the 30S, 36, 90 and more! You can buy SmarTrip tickets (like plastic credit cards) or paper tickets at the station, the SmarTrip cards give a better rate per ride than the paper tickets. (Ask for a senior rate if applicable). By Bike: - Capital Bikeshare offers bikes for rent by the hour or day and are available at the intersection at 12th St & Pennsylvania Ave SE and Eastern Market Metro / Pennsylvania Ave & 7th St SE. Capital BikeShare ((1-877) 430-BIKE (2453). By Metro - Right off the Eastern Market Metro Stop (Orange, Silver, Blue). This property is overall great: Eastern Market location; very well apportioned; easy communication with owners; many restaurants, markets and shops just blocks away. The only thing to consider is one is an older traveler is that it is a basement apartment. The steps down to the apartment are uneven, and the living room is a bit dark.

Liked: Location
We generally enjoyed our stay. There are many good things about the property, inparticular location (just 5 min to the Eastern Market Metro) and the kitchenthat was exceptionally good. We really enjoyed the pots, frying pans, utensils, andstorage containers — well done.Things that need improvement:The carpets did not appear to be properly cleaned upon our arrival, especiallyin the area near the entry door. The electric range burners were not level. We had to adjust them, but even afterthat they were still not fully horizontal. The toilet sticks; sometimes the water does not start refilling after flushing, and you have to open the tank and manually get it going. The sofa bed in the living room is quite old, uneven, and sticks in some places. The bottom drawer of the bedroom dresser is broken.Entry instructions could be clearer. We had trouble opening the doorinitially—for example, it should be specified that the same key is used for thelock connected to the handle, not the other one.Noise:This is the biggest issue. Sound isolation is essentially nonexistent—we couldhear every step and conversation from upstairs. We were told the owners liveupstairs, which turned out not to be true; it is a rental apartment. For acouple of days, the upstairs neighbors were not considerate of late hours, andnoise persisted well into the night. This is unacceptable. We had to go upstairsand ask for cooperation.
