Great spot! Had a fantastic time and ejoyed the local waterfalls and towns. The space was clean and just what we were looking for. We really enjoyed the hot tub area!
I would consider changing the door swing to the cabin door. Having it open into the small space isn't functional.
Our stay at Field and Fern Cottages in their Sunset Cottage #2 was excellent. Our cottage was very clean and tidy. It held all of the amenities needed by us plus a crib board and various games. We did bring our own cooler as well. We enjoyed our morning coffee on the front deck and got to check out and listen to the horses across the way from the stables. The hot tub was very relaxing. We didn't try out our fire pit but found it was well stocked with wood. Our hosts and their communication was excellent. We were down on vacation and booked this cottage on line a number of months before. We would happily book again with Field and Fern in the future. Cheers Scott & Pam

Thank you so much for your lovely review! We're delighted you enjoyed your stay in Sunset Cottage #2. Morning coffee on the deck with the horses nearby is one of our favourite ways to start the day too! We're so glad you found everything clean, cozy, and well equipped, and that you had time to relax in the hot tub. It was a pleasure hosting you, and we'd love to welcome you back to Field and Fern Cottages for another peaceful getaway.
Property is quaint and quiet. We’ve stayed twice and have been alone on the property both times. Rooms are small but well stocked with blankets, kitchen needs and games. Easy access to the fireplace and hot tub, and bathrooms were great for an outhouse. Hosts are friendly and send update messages throughout the stay. The road in was fairly icy, but wasn’t too bad once on the property. There is no wifi and the cell service is spotty, but not a bad location if you’re not planning on staying in your room all day.

Thank you so much for staying with us again and for taking the time to share your experience! We’re really glad you enjoyed the quiet atmosphere and had the chance to relax and make use of the firepit and hot tub. It’s great to hear the cabins were well stocked and that the bathrooms and amenities met your needs.
We appreciate you mentioning the road conditions as well—winter can definitely make the drive a little adventurous, but we’re glad it improved once you reached the property. As you noted, the limited cell service and lack of Wi-Fi are part of the off-grid experience here, which many guests enjoy as a chance to unplug and spend time outdoors.
It was a pleasure hosting you again, and we hope to welcome you back for another peaceful stay in the future!
About the host
Hosted by Stuart or Melinda Lewis
My wife, Melinda, and I love to travel and meet new people. I am from BC and Melinda is from Saskatchewan. We have been living on the East Coast since 2008 and have made it our home. We are excited to be hosts welcoming people to Balmoral Mills, Nova Scotia.
Why they chose this property
Our journey began when we first visited these charming rustic cottages in Balmoral Mills, Nova Scotia. From the moment we arrived, we were captivated by the tranquil beauty of the babbling brook, the peaceful countryside, and the sense of escape these cozy retreats offered. We knew immediately that this was a special place worth sharing.
What makes this property unique
In a quiet corner of Nova Scotia, where the fields roll soft and the brook sings its gentle song, two tiny cabins rest beneath the open sky. Field & Fern is a place where time slows, the air feels sweeter, and the world seems to hush just long enough for you to hear your own heartbeat again.
Here, mornings begin with the glow of sunrise spilling across the meadow, warming your hands as you cradle a fresh cup of coffee on the veranda. Afternoons drift by in a hammock suspended between earth and sky, or wandering through wild grasses toward the whisper of nearby waterways. And when night comes, the fire crackles, the stars gather close, and the hot tub glows warm beneath the moonlight—just for you.
Each cabin is a tiny sanctuary of rustic charm, a cozy “bedroom in a field,” built for dreamers, wanderers, and those who long for a quiet place to fall in love again—with nature, with each other, with the simple joy of slowing down.
Field & Fern isn’t just a place to stay. It’s a place to soften, to breathe, to remember what peace feels like.
