## Interaction
## Neighborhood
The true heart of the city, Place Masséna officially came into being in 1852, when the project by architect Joseph Vernier was finally completed. With its porticoed facades and pilasters, its facing balconies and terraces, the “Carrée” square is the starting point for the development of Nice towards the right bank of the Paillon.
Place Masséna was completely redesigned and refurbished in 2008 to create a vast pedestrian area. It is both a place of life because many events take place there throughout the year but also one of the most important traffic axes of the city being crossed by the new tram line. On the southern part of the square is the "fountain of the sun" and its five bronze statues sculpted by Alfred Janniot. Each of them represents a character from Greco-Roman mythology: Mars, Mercury, Saturn, Earth, and Venus. In the center of the fountain is a seven-meter-high marble statue of Apollo.
The square is also embellished by the works of the Catalan artist Jaume Plensa. These represent scribes located at the top of their base, about ten meters above the ground, in a squatting or seated position. The scribes are 7 in number and each symbolizes a continent. These statues were erected in translucent resin. Their variable colors represent the reciprocity of exchanges between continents.
To the north is Avenue Jean Médecin, with its wide sidewalks, its department stores such as FNAC or Galeries Lafayette, as well as its café-restaurants.
Place Masséna and avenue Jean Médecin offer many possibilities of housing: whether it is a two-room apartment ideal for a rental investment due to the immediate proximity of all transport, or a superb last floor with large terrace, the offer is varied and synonymous with excellent real estate investment.
The Jean-Médecin district is a grandiose district with picturesque streets, museums, shops and restaurants. Located just south of the city center, this area is ideal for shopping and finding a good restaurant.
On the tourism side, the Jean-Médecin district is home to the Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art as well as the Masséna Museum, an establishment bringing together works of art and old objects dating from the birth of the Côte d'Azur to the Belle Epoque. One of its most valuable pieces is Napoleon's death mask.
