This beautiful, waterfront property nestled between Pigeon Hill Preserve and Petit Manan National Wildlife Refuge which is approximately a 10 minute walk away. Both have beautiful hiking trails and unbelievable views of islands, shorelines and Cadillac Mountain for your enjoyment. The enchantment of the restless sea, the view of the lighthouse and sounds of the echoing foghorn of Petit Manan beckon you to the natural beauty surrounding this waterfront cottage.
Downeast Retreat includes ceramic tile, radiant heat floors, natural spruce and pine, post and beam organic architecture that takes advantage of all your surroundings no matter where you are in the spacious and cozy cottage. Featuring two outside decks; one ocean side the other brook side. Take in all the sounds of ocean, sea birds, the distant fog horn, or bubbling stream, song birds and whispering winds through spruce and fir. The choice is yours. Awaken to a breathtaking view of islands in the bay from the upstairs loft. Watch the local fisherman as they set out to sea for the day’s fresh catch. Take in the salt air as you watch eagles travel the coastline past our cottage along to Petit Manan National Wildlife Refuge. Hiking trails, kayaking and biking are out the front door. Pick wild blueberries in season, only a short walk away. Fresh lobster and clams can be ordered locally just minutes from the cottage.
The cottage waterfront overlooks Bois Bubert Island, the Atlantic Ocean and Petit Manan Lighthouse. Again, Petit Manan National Wildlife Refuge is a half mile away with several shore hikes and incredible views. The Pigeon Hill Preserve has spectacular trails to it’s 317 foot summit, and displays an extraordinary panoramic view of the surrounding area including numerous Maine islands, mountains, bays and Petit Manan Peninsula itself.
Bar Harbor, Acadia National Park and the bustling town of Ellsworth also make great day trip destinations. To complete your authentic Maine experience, take a day trip Nor’ east on route one through the heart of Down-east Maine from Milbridge to Eastport. If you want an international experience then continue to Campabello Island or New Brunswick, Canada only an hour and a half away but remember to bring your passport.
A fantastic & delightful memorable experience for everyone.

Perfect honeymoon getaway

This cottage was absolutely perfect for our honeymoon! It was clean, well stocked, and in a fantastic location. We loved the fall foliage, the nearby trails, and the proximity to the harbor. Ray was the ideal host with recommendations of places to go and restaurants to visit. We hope to come back in the future for an anniversary trip!

Perfect place for nature lovers

This home is both beautiful and comfortable, and the owners could not be nicer. The best surprise is that the hiking trails just minutes from the house are wonderful. No need to drive to Acadia for beautiful views and a bit of a challenge if one wants that. The upstairs of the house is more beautiful in person than the photos.

Perfect Coastal Gem!!

Absolutely stunning view. Hosts Jay and Jo were amazing and gave us suggestions for food and scenic adventures. Our stay was peaceful and adventurous with all the walking paths we were surrounded with. I even saw a white deer (rare find). We have stayed at many places over the years and this has been our favorite.

A lovely cottage on the coast

We had a wonderful and restorative visit to Pigeon Hill in Steuben. The hosts, Ray and Jo, were gracious and had thought of everything to make the cottage they created warm and welcoming. And it's a stunningly beautiful section of the Maine coast. We very hope to return one day!

Quite lovely but notably isolated

Down east was lovely. The cabin well built. The host ( Ray) was so helpful. It was very helpful to have Dish TV and wi - fi. With out those additions we thought there was not enough to do around the Steuben area.

Bright, warm, new space in a great location.

The house is warm and bright, characterized by blonde wood throughout the interior, and it's situated in one of the most lovely spots in what is a most beautiful part of the country, the coast of Maine... and the hosts are extremely nice people. Did I mention the heated tile floor? Awesome when the wind and fog roll in!

A perfect getaway!

From start to finish, we had a wonderful stay. We were greeted by Ray and Jo upon arrival and answered any questions that we had. The house was perfect in every way with such attention to detail. It is in a wonderful location tucked away from it all, yet a 20-30 minute drive to anything you may need. It is a quiet street directly across from the ocean. There is a stream on the side of the house. We enjoyed looking for tons of sea glass on the beach and hiking the Hollingsworth Trail at the end of the road. Ray's book with activity and food recommendations was perfect, but his actual conversations were even better. We look forward to visiting again.

A wonderful getaway!!

My husband along with our goldendoodle and I had such a wonderful stay in Steuben! We needed a few days away from it all and this was exactly what we had hoped for! Ray made us feel welcome and was extremely helpful with some tips to avoid crowds and for some local food options! The house was impeccably clean and the views from the porch and breakfast table were unbelievable. We enjoyed taking a morning walk with our dog along the water’s edge. We travel to Maine each year and this was our first time staying in this small fishing village and we will definitely return! Thank you Ray!!

We can’t seem to stay away. We’ve enjoyed the Downeast Retreat for three years in a row now.

The Downeast retreat is the perfect escape to unwind and disconnect. How many can say they fell asleep to the sound of the ocean as well as a babbling brook? The retreat is well designed and well equipped for cooking. It’s not touristy, with no big box stores around. Ray and Jo are the perfect hosts and happy to guide you to your interests. Thanks for sharing your little piece of the world! We’ll be back for more!

Tranquil, tucked away, well designed retreat with peaceful sounds and views of the bay.

If you're looking for a warm local welcome and a true taste of Downeast Maine, you'll get all of that and more. Within a five minute walk, buy your fresh lobster as its brought in from the sea. Also within a five minute walk, begin your hike up Pigeon Hill Summit for a panoramic view of the entire peninsula. There are no tourist traps here; it's quiet Downeast Maine. It's central to many points of interest such as: Schoodic Point, Acadia, Bar Harbor and Quoddy Hill State Park. Ray and Jo are most accommodating with insightful recommendations of the best hidden gems in Downeast Maine.

About the host

Hosted by Ray & Jo

Host profile image
Ray is a retired Director of an Adult Education program in the western mountains of Maine, an outdoor enthusiast, cyclist and gardener. Joanne is an a working Registered Nurse, stained glass artisan and animal advocate. Together we enjoy the peacefulness of our get-away cottage and the surrounding beauty of it all.

Why they chose this property

Working in the area led us to this beautiful unique quaint fishing village. The peacefulness combined with the Petit Manan National Wildlife Refuge 1/2 mile walk from our cottage with fields of song birds and blueberries for the picking located on a remote Maine peninsula left us spelled bound with the overwhelming beauty and serenity. The cobble stone private beach and magnificent views including sun and moon rises, sounds of sea birds and shore sounds lulled us to choose this enchanted remote paradise with the historical cultural elements still intact and thriving today.
We are proud and pleased to share this uniquely designed cottage for its privacy and beauty. Enjoy the local cultural experience that surrounds it, and the natural beauty of this unique, untouched, natural habitat as we experienced it ourselves.

What makes this property unique

The cottage itself was thoughtfully conceived incorporating numerous Frank Lloyd Wright principles and design in organic architecture.
A design that is in harmony with humanity and the surrounding environment.
Collaborating with designer, builder Joe LeVigne, of "Sprezzatura," the elegant and harmonious creation of our cottage, "Downeast Retreat" was created. Through mindful design of space, local spruce and pine wood, window placement with a intentional view in every direction, the natural sound and sight of this extraordinary paradise is invited into every nook and room of our cottage.
The panoramic views of the bay of Petit Manan Island light house, Bois Bubert Island or the coming & going of fishing trollers & lobster boats through the colorful bouys' in the bay, lends a magical and romantic feeling all of its own.
Our piece of ocean front property directly across the street, with access to the cobble stone beach to sit and have morning coffee, or evening cocktails at sunset, makes this property that much more irresistible.
The outdoor activities, hiking, biking, kayaking that are all available right outside the door of the cottage was the icing on the cake for us.
Having access to fresh sea foods (caught daily from the bay), local boat and whale watching tours, fresh water lakes and beaches is too good to be true. The local farmers market in the town Milbridge, is only a 10 min. drive.
The many quaint and small scenic fishing villages and abounding bold coast hikes as one sojourns Nor'east up the coast to Rogues Bluff, Quoddy Head or Campobello Island just 1 1/2 hours away make for a fun, memorable day trip. The Canadian border is only 1 and 1/2 hrs drive from the cottage.
