The Camp Bird Retreat stands as a definitive masterclass in alpine luxury, positioned at the very edge of the world within the exclusive Mineral Farm enclave of Ouray, Colorado. Spanning an impressive 6,000 square feet, this estate is far more than a mountain residence; it is a sanctuary crafted for those who seek the "Switzerland of America" through a lens of total privacy and refined sophistication. Located just two miles from the historic heart of Ouray, the property manages to feel entirely removed from civilization while remaining anchored to the rich history of the San Juan Mountains. The architecture is a deliberate celebration of scale and light, featuring massive floor-to-ceiling windows that frame the jagged, iron-rich peaks and dense forests of aspen and fir. Every corner of the home is designed to harmonize with the rugged spirit of the high country while providing an interior experience defined by warmth, elegance, and meticulously curated comfort.
The heart of the retreat is a culinary and social triumph. The gourmet kitchen, equipped with professional-grade appliances and vast granite preparation surfaces, serves as a theater for hosting, where the act of cooking is elevated by panoramic views of the surrounding wilderness. This space flows seamlessly into a grand living area anchored by a towering stone fireplace, a gathering point that bridges the gap between modern luxury and the storied past. Above the mantle rests a tribute to the home's unique heritage: a photograph of John Wayne, who famously took his breakfast within these very walls during the filming of the cinematic classic True Grit. This sense of history permeates the home, grounding the high-end amenities in a legacy of rugged Western character.
Accommodation at the retreat is designed with a thoughtful emphasis on both community and individual solitude. With six bedrooms and five bathrooms, the home comfortably hosts up to fourteen guests. The layout includes two bespoke bunk rooms for children or younger guests, alongside secluded primary suites that offer private havens of rest. In a commitment to inclusivity, the property features a primary suite specifically designed for full handicap accessibility, ensuring that the majesty of the San Juan Mountains is accessible to everyone. Whether it is a multi-generational family reunion or a high-level corporate retreat, the floor plan provides the rare ability to host large groups without ever sacrificing a sense of intimacy or personal space.
The interior amenities go well beyond the standard luxury fare, offering specialized spaces for every whim. A private, state-of-the-art cinema room provides the ultimate venue for evening entertainment, while a sophisticated billiards room offers a space for competitive relaxation. Perhaps the most soulful feature of the home is the indoor music conservatory. Equipped with a piano, a guitar, and a vintage Victrola, this acoustic sanctuary invites guests to create their own soundtrack to the mountains, allowing the notes of a piano to drift through the halls as snow falls silently against the glass. For those who must remain connected to the outside world, dedicated office spaces and high-speed internet allow for a seamless "work-from-anywhere" experience, though the distracting beauty of the Mineral Farm peaks may make focusing on a screen a difficult task.
The exterior of the Camp Bird Retreat is where the property truly transcends the ordinary. Situated along the prestigious Camp Bird Road, the estate serves as a private gateway to thousands of acres of pristine wilderness. The grounds are part of a community dedicated to Dark Sky Preservation, offering a celestial display that is nearly unparalleled in North America. When the outdoor lights go down, the Milky Way reveals itself in startling clarity, a sight best enjoyed from the steaming warmth of the outdoor hot tub or while gathered around the glow of the propane firepit. The property also offers direct access to world-famous trails like Imogene Pass and Yankee Boy Basin, making it an adventurer’s paradise for off-roading, hiking, and photography.
Life at the retreat is governed by a philosophy of quiet luxury and environmental respect. Strict quiet hours are observed to preserve the natural silence of the canyon, ensuring that the only sounds to greet you in the morning are the wind through the trees and the distant call of a hawk. It is a place of profound serenity, where the air is thinner but the soul feels lighter. The Camp Bird Retreat is not just a place to stay; it is a curated experience of the American West, offering a rare synthesis of history, luxury, and an unfiltered connection to one of the most beautiful landscapes on earth. From the thundering waters of Box Canyon Falls to the frozen heights of the Ouray Ice Park, the very best of Colorado is right at your doorstep.

I had many people from out of town come to colorado for fellowship l. Everyone loved the home, views, and location. Thank you for allowing us to spend our time here.
We had a wonderful time both in the house and doing things in the area of Ouray. We try to make a family (ages 80-10) trip every summer and this one ranks up there with the best. The only reason for the 4 star on cleanliness was the open band aid on the floor of our shower in the master suite on the top floor.

Beautiful home, a lot of rules
The home is very nice, many extras, good location, and plenty of room for our family to enjoy. The check in was confusing since the property manager did not respond to our phone calls per our check in instructions. During our brief conversation, she was disrespectful and unhelpful. There are many rules that were not explained in the online description. Overall, the stay was great except for the bear on the 2nd floor balcony, and doors that don't lock.
Nice property we were happy overall but had a few issues. We have stayed at several in Colorado and are aware of the nature of the surroundings and amenities that come with that but for the price you would think a few things would be kept cleaner. There was mold in the master shower, the trash cans were overflowing in the garage when we got there, there was one roll of toilet paper in each bathroom, the power windows and shades only about half of them worked throughout the whole house. Overall the atmosphere is beautiful but for that kind of money there are several little things you would think could be better.

Hello Patrick,
We do appreciate your insight some of the items we addressed when you arrived the shower was not mentioned.
Trash day is Thursday and previous guest forgot to place trash outside of garage. I did send up maintenance who hauled trash off immediately and addressed with a new clean crew to always advise supervisor on duty if trash needs to be removed off site.
In addition, I did provide you access to our supply storage to access more supplies. In our clean pictures taken day of arrival we do show 3 rolls in three of the 4 baths, and I did address with the clean crew and supervisor on that day we need to ensure ample supplies for large groups.
We do have 4 high window shades that have been an issue and we continue to replace batteries which I did mention up front. I am working with the owner to find a solution for these remote shades and fully respect your input.
The master bath shower doubles as a wet sauna if door is left closed after shower or sauna use it can cause issue. We do have signage but will work on solutions for future guests.
We appreciate your valued input and will certainly address all issues as it's highly important for us to meet our guest expectations.
Best Regards,
Laura
We had a couple of bumps at the start but Laura was very responsive and made everything right!
Beautiful house and ample room for our large group- there were 10. Location and setting were great. Disappointed we we not allowed to explore the area more.
Laura took care of us so all in all a very good stay.
This house is beautiful and has the most amazing views! We held a small family reunion here (15 ppl) for New Years and it was the most fun I’ve had in a long time.
The house is spacious with fun amenities; the adults enjoyed the pool table and everyone LOVED the movie theatre.
If you like snow, then winter here is the place for you!! We went sledding and relaxed in the hot springs.
There were some minor inconveniences that occurred but communication with the property manager is fast and easy.
I would absolutely come back to this property.
Location is excellent for families who want to ride the trails, spend quality time together, entertain and make lifelong memories. Overall the experience was incredible. Kids loved the pool table, bunk beds, theatre room and fire pit for s’mores. I gave it 4 stars for cleanliness (trash cans full, moths, kitchen countertops). Expected a little more to be provided for the price (propane tank was on low, 1/2 roll of TP, 1 roll paper towels) but it was easy to cruise into town and stock up on necessary supplies. All the turnkey items and furnishings were nice and new. We had a wonderful vacation and highly recommend this home to large groups!

Owen was a nice guest. Some items mentioned were not brought to our attention we have bulk supplies on property at all times, just give us a call and we can direct you on where to obtain more paper towels. Owen arrived when we had to use trash cans in the garage as we awaited our bear secure trash dumpster. The week prior a bear had invaded the dumpster twice so we had a heavy lid put on.
