If you want to get away from the hustle and bustle of not only Kona but life in general then this is your spot. It is a tranquil spot, whose sound is sometimes interrupted by chickens or the chirps of Coqui, NOT people talking, cars running or airplanes flying...heaven.
Harry and Wendy were great hosts. She answered questions before our booking and quickly responded to more of my questions a week before our trip. The downstairs apartment is comfortable with two bedrooms, a shared bathroom, small living room, roomy kitchen and lanai. The bedding was clean and inviting, there was extra blankets for cooler nights. We had 2 bars of Verizon and did not need the wifi access on the host's tablet. We cooked dinner 6 of the 7 nights and had all the kitchenware we needed. The house is powered by solar and the host preferred laundry is done "When the sun is shining". This was probably the only inconvenience as I would have liked to dry towels overnight before an early morning departure. With that said, that was such a tiny detail, there were so many pluses. The property is quiet with beautiful trees, plants, domestic and wild animals. If a gecko on the wall freaks you out, you have travelled too far from your own bubble. The kids had fun catching about 3 intruders during the week and relocated them back to the bushes outside. Having beach chairs, umbrellas, snorkel gear and an extra cooler was one of the reasons this home fit our needs (and our budget). The hosts are very helpful with great tips of where to park at beaches and must-see destinations. 5 stars for our first VRBO.
Great place in the country buy close to everything!
I 100% recommend this place! The setting is beautiful, the hosts are amazing, lots and lots of amenities but one piece of advice I would give to all people staying here is to arrive in the daytime, when it's still light outside. It's not difficult to find and Google maps takes you right to the end of their driveway but the road is narrow and it's really dark so for your first arrival, make it in the light. After that, it's not a problem to arrive in the dark.
The place was very well set up with snorkeling gear, beach chairs, boogie boards, umbrellas and lots of stuff we didn't use. The kitchen is very well equipped as we ate all of our breakfasts and dinners at "home". We grilled freshly caught Blue Marlin on the grill, enjoyed watching the sunset over the ocean on the balcony and hearing the sounds of nature at night as we slept with all the windows open.
It's out in the country and up the hill from the main part of town but it's still only 10 minutes from Costco and about that to the main part of town with Safeway, Walmart and other stores.
The beds were comfortable, lots of water pressure in the shower and the place just worked out great for us (2 couples in our 60's). The hosts were friendly but not intrusive.
I look forward to returning - and thanks Harry and Wendy for being such great hosts!
We had a great time here. It was secluded and private, got nice and cool at night, and had everything we needed. We were lulled to sleep by the frogs, greeted by Annie-Dog when we returned from adventures, & we made friends with all the chickens. There were beach chairs, an umbrella, snorkel gear, & water shoes to borrow. Wendy and Harry were sweet hosts. Mahalo & aloha!
Enjoyed the all solar powered, naturally cooled property. The hosts are incredibly nice bringing in fruits that are in season. Short drive to most stores and restaurants, and you get to stay in the lap of nature. Definitely my go to place next time we are in the area.

Perfect adventurous guests and fun to talk to...left Ohana so nice!
We thoroughly enjoyed our stay, sitting on the balcony watching the clouds over the ocean and the breeze swaying the plentiful and lush vegetation. It is well worth the drive up to this isolated spot, not even far from town and cooler because of the elevation. It was perfect in so many ways and contributed to an excellent vacation.

About the host
Hosted by Wendy Pritikin
Wendy is a retired social worker and Harry is a real estate broker in Kailua-Kona, Hawaii. Harry has lived on the Big Island since December 23rd, 1978 and Wendy joined him in 1985. We purchased our 5.5 acres in 1990 and built our home in 1992.
Why they chose this property
Only ten minutes from Kailua pier, home of the world famous Kona Billfishing Tournament. Numerous shops and restaurants are found along the strip of Alii Drive from the pier to Royal Kona Resort. There is a 65 tree fruit orchard on the property with mangos, avocados plus all kids of citrus and tropical fruits you man never have heard of. Next door is a coffee farm with the best coffee in Kona. Property is surrounded by other large acreages for added peace & quiet.
