A LITTLE BIT OF HISTORY
In 1943 my parents purchased the 80-acre farm, farmhouse and barn for $2,800. In 1944 the current home was built on the site of the old homestead. The white barn is the original barn that was on the property when my parents purchased the farm which makes it about 100 years old.

At the time, America was using all of our resources to fight World War II, therefore building materials were hard to come by. All the lumber used to build the home in 1944 was used lumber bought from a lumber yard in Brighton Illinois.
There was no basement in the original farmhouse, so dad dug the basement with a scoop pulled by a team of mules and as the main support for the house my grandpa hand hewed the beam from a white oak timber found on the farm. This beam is still supporting the homestead to this day!

No electric, no gas, no running water!

It wasn’t until sometimes in the fifties did we have electric, until then we saw by kerosene lamps and mom cooked on a wood stove. There was no running water, but we had a cistern to catch rainwater which was then pumped into the house by a hand pump. You can still see the cistern around the back of the house.

Chicken, pigs and milk cows all lived on the farm.

In 1964 an addition was added onto the living room. In order the make way, the original steps (hand poured) needed to be moved. Daddy had an old John Deer tractor that he used to work the farm; it was all that tractor could do to move those old steps a few feet from the house where they remain today.

In 2003, with the help of my family, the Homestead Retreat was one of the first guest houses to open in Grafton. With a new front porch, the mud room converted into a sunroom, a fresh coat of paint and a few pillows we were ready to go. But mostly it's just like mom and dad left it. Yes, there is running water and indoor plumbing!!

Converting my childhood home into the Grafton Homestead Retreat has been, and still remains, a labor of love.

This charming farmhouse is so inviting and a quiet respite away from the noise of the world where you can slow down and relax. We spent most of our time on the lovely front porch enjoying the large variety of birds on the farm and the sounds of the local roosters crowing. Nearby are great hiking spots, two impressive museums, The Lewis and Clark Historic Site and The National Great Rivers Museum, and you can stand at the confluence of the Mississippi River and The Missouri River! Patricia is very responsive, but we had really had no issues during our stay. We hope to return next year!

great place to stay

Awesome property to stay at, we didn't have time to explore around but there is a lot of fun stuff to do. We forgot a baby monitor camera and realized it when we were halfway home (3.5 hours) and Patricia mailed it to us the next day! 100% would recommend

My husband had a mild stroke in April and is experiencing memory issues so I put together a surprise 75th Birthday party. Brothers, sisters, a nephew, kids and grandkids traveled from as far as California, North Carolina, Georgia, Kansas City and many from Michigan to celebrate and share memories. While the venue has room for 6 to overnight the place was perfect for our day time celebrations and evening cornhole competitions and stories by the fire. Peaceful atmosphere and shear beauty of the property was met with the perfect weekend weather that made our stay wonderful. Many memories were shared and many more were made. Kids and family loved the game room and hanging outside. Fire side stories at night and a little music and it was a weekend to always remember. Thank you for giving us the chance to make a 75th birthday a memory of a lifetime.Jack, Lisa, Falon, Sabrina, Jeremy, Jason, Harlow, Finn, Elizabeth, Todd, Carol, Dave, Barb, Dave, Mike, Randy and Pattie.

Quiet & peaceful with lots to do

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at Homestead Retreat! Cute little vintage farmhouse in a beautiful, peaceful, wooded setting with a pretty little pond. Lots to do between exploring the property, sitting on the awesome front porch and the garage converted into a full fledged game room. You can tell that Patricia has put a lot of care into all kinds of little details to make her guests' stay great. We will definitely be back!

Fun Place

Nice property. It's fun to spend time on the porches and watch the birds. The house has some years on it but that's it's charm. The game room is a nice addition. Open the doors and enjoy that. Nice trails around the property. It's so quiet. We thoroughly enjoyed it.

Homestead Haven

We found The Homestead to be a wonderful haven, perfect for relaxation and hitting the "reset" button. It's so much more than a house -- it truly is a home. You can feel the love of a family throughout each room. We especially appreciated the untouched farm ambiance, just like walking into grandma's when we were young. We found the accommodations to be comfortable for our week long stay. We slept long and soundly every night! The trails and spots of serenity throughout the property were welcoming, thoughtful and special. Much time was spent outside walking, reading and peddling around the lake. During hot summer days, we appreciated ample shade provided by beautiful, mature trees and continuously commented about the constant gentle breeze. This farm homestead is packed with history and interesting finds, including wildlife. Thank you, Patricia and Shirley, for sharing your lovely home.

A Terrific Thanksgiving

We enjoyed our stay at the Homestead Retreat very much! We gathered as a family to celebrate Thanksgiving and spent from Tuesday through Saturday morning there. Our hosts went above and beyond to make us comfortable, allowing us to park our camper and run electricity for heat so we had additional bed space and a place for our large dog to sleep and stay when we left the house. Some of our family stayed with us and other family members from St. Louis joined us just for dinner. The hosts provided such welcoming touches, too, such as the ingredients to make homemade pancakes, luxury shampoo and conditioner, all of the essential staples, and some yummy snacks. They called to check that we found everything we needed. Communication with them was always so easy. They responded quickly to any messages we sent. Our three generations of family had a wonderful Thanksgiving with lots of love and laughter in this cozy home. We hope to return sometime soon!

Mid week pre summer " brain" break

This was a post school end, pre summer activities brain break before our days were filled with busy schedules. Lovely property and house. My 19 year old throughly enjoyed fishing all hours of the day and night. 15 year old was tagging along for mum and brothers sake but in reality i could tell it did him good away from his faming machine and friends. My dog and i absolutely loved going on walks and exploring. If you are looking for getting away from city , modt definitely came to the right place.i would strongly advise packing some groceries or purchasing on u r wsy to retreat like basics eggs, bread , meat etc if you want to stay put. The nearest grocery is 30-45 mins away. We ate out 2 times but stayed put mostly. Definitely recommend Pere Marquette lodge restaurant. Thank you patricia and shirley for sharing your place.

We came here looking for a relaxing getaway. That’s exactly what we got! We had family come visit and we caught so many fish, walked the trail and hung out on the porch! The house is so cozy and every person said they loved it. The house is a homey feel like visiting your grandmas house as a kid. I loved the old oven and we made some delicious breakfast. They even had snacks and everything needed for waffles/pancakes. If you enjoy fishing like me and my wife then this is the place for you! We had bite after bite and caught several fish! We will most definitely be bake and are already trying to figure out a time to book our next trip here!!

We really enjoyed the peaceful setting and the convenience to many locations nearby. The garage hangout was fun. We were a little put off by the smell upon entering the house. Like it hadn't been thoroughly cleaned or updated for a long time. Windows were open to air it out. It could use a good cleaning and a few updates. The refrigerator and oven are very outdated and the oven needs to be cleaned desperately. All the windowsills should be vacuumed out and screens replaced. The bed was very comfortable and there are many things there to fill your time. Books, games and walks to name a few. Overall, if you come prepared to stay here, it's a good choice. It's safe, convenient and the owners are very friendly.
