My husband and I literally met on Destiny Boulevard in the Horizons Apartments' hot tub in Kissimmee, Florida. He was working as an intern for the Disney World Dixie Landings project in 1991. I was teaching in a drop out prevention program for 4th and 5th graders in Osceola County. Andrew graduated from the University of Cincinnati with a BS in Construction Management in 1995. We have been buying, renovating and selling homes in Florida for 27 years. We also have been landlords and hosts of vacation rentals since our first Florida property in 1997. The majority of the homes we have lived in and renovated were in major hurricane areas and low lands. We got flooded and hit hard during hurricane Charley in 2004 while living on Fort Myers Beach. We have had homes and rentals flooded from tropical depressions. We have helped friends and clients rebuild after hurricanes. Although it is always painful seeing people go through trauma and losing our own mementos and belongings, we feel useful when we help people put their lives back together again. We are general contractors. Our company name is Flowers General Contracting, Llc. We have been operating the company since 2004. Our tag line is: Making the Old, New Again!

Why they chose this property

I believe Mt Dora helped make magic happen in my life. On 2/29/92 I came to Mt Dora for a friend's outdoor wedding at the Lakeside Inn. Although I didn't know it at the time, it turned out that I would get married later that year to my current husband. I clearly remember being on the dock at the Lakeside Inn looking at the beautiful wedding decorations on the lawn and daydreaming about how wonderful it would be to own a place in Mt Dora where people could come and enjoy the town and celebrate their life events.
Flash forward 32 years to the year 2020. There is a pandemic. All three of our adult children have had to come live in our home in St Petersburg, Florida from various parts of the world including one from Zambia, Africa serving time in the Peace Corps. My husband and I escaped to Mt Dora to ride bicycles for the day, fully intending on returning back to St. Pete that night. We had been looking at properties in Central Florida for about 7 years. Being general contractors, we had been searching for a special project to work on. My husband was constantly looking online. While in Mt Dora we rode by a B and B he had seen online that was about a mile from downtown. We called to see it. A woman came out to show it to us, but, she did not bring the keys so we just walked around outside. She left and my husband and I went to get on our bikes to continue our ride. We stood there for a moment looking at the home. It had already been renovated. We talked about how it was a historic home and so we probably could not change the outside look of the house much. We talked about how it just wasn't that appealing to us, how it looked from the front yard where we stood. And so we spoke together to the higher powers of the universe for the first time about our future project. I said, "You know, I'd really like a beautiful front porch with a wrap around porch with enough room on it to put at least 5 rocking chairs." And he said, " And please let it NOT be ugly."

What makes this property unique

The Flowers House was the very next house we stopped at that day in 2020. My husband had actually seen this house online at one time, but, it had been pulled off the market for quite a few months. As soon as we pulled up to the white picket fence on the sidewalk, I said, "Ooooooo, it has a wrap around porch big enough for 5 rocking chairs!" And he said, "And it is NOT ugly!" We almost put an offer on it right there! When we walked through the front door, we saw it had been stripped! It had been cleared of not just all the debris, but the utilities as well. It would be difficult to get any bank to finance the purchase. Plus, where would we live? There was no electric, water, AC or heat. As we talked to the realtor, we learned that the owner was motivated and would consider owner financing the purchase. And then we saw the little cottage in the back that had electricity, water and an AC. We could live there during the renovation period. We made an offer that afternoon. It was accepted that night! We stayed at a B and B in town and came home the next day to break the news to our adult children.
It was the perfect place at the perfect time. We feel very lucky to have been able to preserve a small part of history in this beautiful old Florida town. We kept as much of the old wood in the house as possible. When we began the project the floors were a mess. The floor in the Magnolia bedroom upstairs was eaten up with termites and water damage. We wanted to vault the ceiling in that room to maximize the grandeur of the space. Andrew, my husband and Lincoln, our best carpenter, carefully removed the floor of the attic over the Magnolia room and used that 100 year old wood, to repair the damaged floor of the Magnolia room. We estimate about 85 percent of the floors in the Flowers house are over 100 years old. And so that is why this property is so special to us. It was a magical experience finding it, financing it, and renovating it.
