About this property

Stay w/ Art at Garden District Gem: Neville House

Surround yourself with art! Neville House is an immersive experience integrating art & travel under one roof. On the National Register of Historic Places (c. 1905), NH provides a serene setting located in the live-oak lined Monroe Garden District (think Southern charm with a European vibe!) where restaurants, shops, city parks + museums are walkable or an easy drive by car. Original artwork by emerging local/regional artists exhibited throughout (inquire to host for details on available works).

About the Space:
Hi, I'm Rebekah, your old house obsessed host! I'm an avid traveler and collector which has inspired me to envision & create this art collective known as Neville House. My goal is to offer engaging opportunities for our guests to become further educated about and enamored with works of art created by local, regional and national artists providing a 'stay with art' experience like no other.

As a Northeast Louisiana native, I've been in love with Neville House and the story behind it since I was a little girl when my mom would take me on day trips to explore the [Monroe] Garden District. NH is a true example of Southern beauty with its white washed clap board cypress siding and double porches beckoning you to come and stay for a while. NH is a two-story neoclassical home featuring historic architectural details (original 120+ year old hardwood floors and windows throughout!). It is lovingly decorated with an eclectic mix of antique and modern furniture & furnishings designed to provide guests with an artistic emergence in the local culture. The interior is full of curated original works of art & antiquities from local & regional artists & makers designed to provide an unforgettable experience. Up to 4 people can stay in this exceptional "art gallery" centrally located in the Monroe Garden District (corner of Hudson Lane & 3rd St.). You will enjoy a NH welcome box (full of local goodies) and modern comforts (Wi-Fi, TV, equipped kitchen) while being immersed in a unique place.

On the main floor, there are two gathering areas just off the entry foyer: a study and a living room that is open to the dining room. Down a short hallway from the dining room is the kitchen offering direct access to the back porch, grilling area with old school picnic table and adjacent conversation + fire pit space for when you decide to chill & grill. Accommodations (upstairs) are comprised of two bedrooms: one with king platform bed with adjoining sitting room and one with a queen bed. There is an oversized bathroom/dressing room and open-air gallery hall (thanks to the screen door!) that opens directly on to an exterior balcony offering birds-eye views flanked by majestic magnolias (THE spot for morning coffee or evening cocktails).

On the Grounds:
Neville House is a proud supporter of the Northeast Louisiana (NELA) public art initiative, Herons on the Bayou, a program connecting talented artists with the local community. As of 2021, 87 heron sculptures (6-feet in scale) are spread throughout Ouachita Parish, each one having its own unique, beautiful design. We encourage you to hop in the car and go on a "Heron Hunt" to visit as many as you can (download the digital Herons on the Bayou map or use the printed one in your welcome box and be sure to tag #heronsonthebayou!).

On the front lawn at Neville House (right on the corner of Hudson & Third), you will discover one of the most recent heron public art installations unlike any other heron works on the Heron Hunt: La Garza, a colorfully beaded work of art created by local artist Mario Mata in keeping with the folk art and handcraft tradition of Mexico's Huichol people. Make a memory and snap a pic with La Garza to share to social!!

Guest Access:
- On site (free) parking.
- For added convenience, there are two locally-owned restaurants (The Okaloosa and Little India) less than one block away + a locally-owned hair salon (Ash Salon) & cigar shop (Omerta Cigar Co.) directly across the street.

Other things to note:
- This property is not wheelchair accessible and the only bathroom is upstairs.
- No washer/dryer, however, host offers laundry service when notified in advance.
- No automatic dishwasher in kitchen, however, there is a drying rack for hand washed items.

Other Things to Note:
Absolutely no parties, events, wedding parties, photoshoots, videographers, or extra guests besides who you booked for without advance approval of owners. Extra fees will apply.

You are staying in an art gallery so there are items that are one of a kind originals or fragile that might be not safe or suitable for ages 2-12 to be around. Any art items broken or damaged during a renter's stay will be the sole responsibility of renter to pay replacement value.

Since we have a no pet policy, any undisclosed pets during a renter's stay will result in a renter being required to vacate immediately and will incur a penalty of $100 for each night of the full reservation booked.

We love that you too love and appreciate this old house! We want to provide you with a heads-up on a few details about this historic property as well as a few preservation and safety tips to be mindful of during your stay:

1. Since Neville House is built primarily from wood, please forgo any activities that may contribute to starting a fire. All five fireplaces are inoperable – the birch logs that you see in the downstairs study and the upstairs den are for decoration only. Please do not remove the existing draft covers from the other three fireplaces (the two downstairs in living/dining rooms and upstairs master bedroom). Please do not burn flamed waxed candles indoors – the only exception to this are the citronella candles and fire wood provided in the designated fire pit & outdoor living areas for exterior use only. Within the interior, we do provide battery operated, flameless candles for added ambiance.
2. Remember our pipes are antique! Please do not flush feminine products, personal cleansing/hygiene wipes, paper towels or foreign objects down the toilet.
3. We love the patina of our original hardwood floors and we need your help in preserving them! Please do not slide furniture or personal belongings on the hardwood floors (they scratch easily because of their age). Should you spill something, please wipe up gently with a nonabrasive cloth (provided under kitchen sink) using mild soap and water. In the bathroom, please wipe up any excess water as soon as possible from in and around the pedestal sink and tub/shower areas. Important tip: When showering (because we had to learn the hard way – LOL!), please be sure that the plastic shower curtain liner is INSIDE the tub (cloth curtain is outside the tub) and to close + OVERLAP the ends of the entire two-ply shower curtain (cloth + liner but especially the waterproof liner) at both ends of the tub where they come together. This is to prevent overspray, splash, overflow and slippage when stepping out. When taking a big ole relaxing bath, remember to place both the cloth curtain + plastic shower liner OUTSIDE the bathtub. Do not overfill tub as there is no overflow drain like newer tubs have (Pro-soaker Tub Tip: When filling claw foot tub with water, plan to leave at least 6-inches of water from the top of tub edge so when you get in, you don't overflow the tub to where the water waterfall over on to the bathroom floor as it will quickly traverse all the way through the hardwoods and run through the ceiling of the downstairs kitchen (yikes, been there, done that!).
4. We know the upstairs balcony will be your most favorite and frequented spot at Neville House. Please be very cautious and aware when standing near the upstairs balcony as the railing is historic height – also, please no leaning, sitting or standing on this railing.
5. All of the doors, windows & hardware (door knobs) are original which means they've been in use for 100+ years. Please be considerate when turning antique doorknobs and opening/closing the old wood doors as they sometimes need a gentle nudge here and there but never any brut force or slamming close.

IMPORTANT SAFETY NOTE: All windows are inoperable (please do not try to open them) so in the event of a fire please access an exterior door to exit (there are 3 exterior exits: on the main level at front entry, at back in the kitchen). There are smoke & carbon monoxide detectors mounted on the ceilings throughout both levels of the interior and fire extinguishers are located in the downstairs kitchen and upstairs bathroom closet.

Charming Retreat with Fantastic Art
We loved our stay at the Neville House. The house was so charming and beautifully appointed. The upstairs was comfortable and inviting. The historic house is quirky, but it’s what gives it its charm. Our host, Rebekah, was incredibly welcoming and thought of many small touches you don’t always find in a rental - coffee bar, shampoo/conditioner, nice hand wash, and a few beverages. We would definitely stay here again and would highly recommend it. Also, one final note about the art work - it was beautiful! Wish we had space to bring a piece or two home.

Neville house hospitality
The owner was prompt and professional in response to messages. The house itself is what one would expect from such an old structure so no issue there, just be aware of some of the quirks that come with such an old home. However, the house and grounds are maintained in excellent fashion and the interior design is splendid.
