The Castle, as we called it, was great. Everything was very clean, the check in and check out processes were extremely easy--which we loved. Every one of us had a bed, the showers were great, bathrooms very well updated, and a dining room table that made games of Phase 10 and Euchre easy as can be. The outdoor area, you wouldn't know there's a busy road 50 yards from you--extremely quiet and comfortable in the afternoon shade. Overall, we would absolutely stay there again!
The Castle was well prepared for our arrival and we had an excellent stay! The hosts were very flexible with making unexpected updates to our reservation which I really appreciated! Thank you for a great DnD weekend!

We love hosting dungeon, and Dragon folks at the Castle and hope you come back again soon
This home is absolutely gorgeous. There aren't any bedrooms on the main level if stairs are an issue for you. Also since it's an older home there isn't any central air but there are plenty of air conditioners in the windows. It just takes a while to cool off the place. Each bedroom is decorated so beautifully. The backyard is just perfect, and the fire pit is an extra bonus. We had my daughter's high school graduation party there and I couldn't have asked for a better setting! Susan was our point of contact and she responded very promptly to my many questions! Really didn't want to leave and hope to go back in the near future.

So happy that you chose the castle for your daughter’s lifetime achievement, and hope she has many more to come. I’m sure she will. We hope to see you back again soon.
This is a great property for a large group. Our family of 7 hosted a dinner for our relatives that live in town and there was ample room for us all. The host was extremely communicative with us our entire trip.

Thank you for staying at our home and being so communicative too. We hope you’ll come back and book with us so you can save 15% and make even more memories. The fall is incredibly gorgeous with all of the trees in the park next to us.
Our scattered family cam together for Thanksgiving. A fun and eclectic home. Lovely in the snow. Would be lots fun to enjoy the outside area in better weather. Shops, restaurants and easy access to Cleveland area. We had a great time. Even got a chance to build a little snowman. Susan was great at communicating with us. Plus Parma residents seem to really enjoy decorating for the holidays. Gave us a holiday spirit boost

Thankyou for staying!! So glad you received a bit of holiday snow too. We were happy to have some Christmas decor up for you. Our neighborhood is big on decorating for all holidays.
This place is such a unique getaway. Somehow we were in town but felt like we were I. The country. There were deer at the back door and such a beautiful backyard. The home was so cozy and it was like a treasure hunt just walking around the home. Comfortable rooms. We just felt right at home. Communication with the host was easy and friendly.

Thankyou for the compliments. So glad the triplet fawns showed up in the yard. We name them every year. And yes the house is set at the edge of the Emerald Necklace of the Park System. The wildlife plus all the trees make you feel like you are in the country because it’s acres and acres and you don’t see neighbors.
My bridal party and I decided that for my wedding we should all stay in a castle. We searched for a while, but when we found this house--it was too stunning not to just book. The place did not disappoint. Even without central air conditioning, the small units in the house kept the place cool in the record-breaking heat wave of June 2024. Susan was very sweet, and messaged me back promptly. We had a wonderful time, and captured some beautiful pictures for our first look. Definitely a place to book if you want a one-of-a-kind stay.
I ultimately chose this location because the home had a certain aesthetic! I was throwing a reunion for my older sister and her college friends. The house is beautifully furnished and in the warmer months would be excellent for outdoor relaxation!
I definitely appreciated the labeled light switches, I live in an older house and understand that the electricity is often wired strangely in older homes. It made our guests laugh that the TV only worked if you turned on the sconces by the fireplace.
We had a wonderful stay and created many memories! Thank you for up, keeping such a beautiful home
The location of the house is closer to the busy street than I expected from the pictures. We were able to move in a little early in an effort to beat the ranging winter storm. Unfortunately, the house was not winter ready before big storm hit. The Marks and our family members worked to get the house buttoned down. The last day we finally got the temperature right. It is an interesting property and has some very nice antiques. The roaming deer made an appearance the last day of our stay.
The house needs a little TLC but nothing major. I will be following up with the host.

We were happy to accommodate you in checking in early due to the mega blizzard of the century. To be clear for future renters: No house could be "ready" for that blizzard. It was set up the same way as last winter which did just fine. Thanks for the followup on adjusting the one railing. We appreciate conscientious guests like you & your family. So happy you also enjoy the deer & our antiques. Come back again in better weather!! Love your idea on having a pictogram on how to open and close leaded glass casement windows. There are 2 levels of being closed. Future guests pls Check out the guest book for the pictogram.
We had a lovely time at this property. It was perfect for our family. Eclectic, interesting decor in every room. It is obvious the owner is trying to provide every amenity a guest would require and/or enjoy. A very thoughtful property. There are two things that could be an issue: the listing makes it look like it is in the woods, and the backyard is especially park-like and beautiful with a creek and even deer strolled through, but the house sits on a very busy street and is not set back at all. The other is that there is no air conditioning except for one unit in the main bedroom. We lucked out in mid-June with a cool spell, so we could all sleep. Had it been warm and humid, we would not have been able to stay. We will definitely consider staying here again with a mind to the time of year.

Thankyou for your thoughtful review. We do try to think of things guests might need including USB ports inside the electric plugs and in power strips. AC: We do have ac in every bedroom & the living room. The lower level in summer is always a perfect temp with zero need for an. To be a bit more precise on ac. We do not usually install until mid June when temperatures could spike which is why the ac was only in the master for this reservation. If we see that temps will spike earlier in the season then we are able to quickly put in the AC units -even day of arrival if needed. The house is set up on a hill and the set back from the Main Street is approx 100 ft and with that said there is 3/4 of an acre here behind the house where the entertaining patio is located as well as the fire pit (by the stream in the woods) - all relaxation areas and the grill are in the back no where near a street. There are literally no houses to the west or north of the castle and only one to the east. So it is peaceful and yes so peaceful that a mother doe leaves us her newborn during the day. Ask to see photos. We will share.
The property is beautiful with an amazing back yard that backs to a forest and a stream. It is so peaceful to sit outside. This home is a great place for gatherings, and for lovers of older homes, this is is a gem. The five bedrooms allow many guests to sleep comfortably, and Susan (the property owner) is a delightful hostess.
My only cautionary comments about the home are the bathrooms and kitchen. All are beautifully updated. However, there is not a dishwasher in the kitchen which, for us, wasn't an issue as both my Dad and husband don't mind handwashing. However, with a lot of guests, dish clean-up can get cumbersome.
The heading of the rental on VRBO says three full baths, but if you read more closely, there are only two full baths and two half baths, which means that there are only two showers. One of the showers is in the basement, which is two to three stories below four of the bedrooms. Susan is planning on adding an additional shower in the third story turret. Until then, be prepared to juggle showers schedules as the master bath is the only bathroom on the three main levels with a shower or bathtub.

Thankyou Amy. A pleasure to meet you & your family. For clarity sake:
1. there is a second kitchen with fridge, microwave, sink, stainless steel food prep surface in the lower level. The dishwasher is found there next to the sink and works great! Apologies this was not realized. See photo in new check-in instructions. Nice to see some people enjoy washing dishes though. You are blessed Amy.
2. Full baths: the second floor has a full bath with both a large tile shower & a soaking tub with hand held shower. One door leads to the master bedroom making it en-suite. The door in between the shower and tub is just outside the tower which has approx 9 steps up or down to get to it. There is also a Jack & Jill half bath between the other 2 bedrooms. The second full bath with massive tile shower is just outside Merlin's Cave bedroom making it really en-suite so no need to take any stairs to this from that bedroom. Theoretically 3 people can take a bath or shower at the same time depending on how well they know each other. He he. A wife and husband can decide who gets the tub and who gets the shower. We have an 80 gallon hot water tank so there is plenty of hot water.
If you are in the 3rd floor 700 sq ft bedroom you can choose to use the 2nd fl full bath. Approx 9 steps away.
If you are in one of the 2nd fl bedrooms (not the master) you can either take turns using shower/or tub or walk down to Merlins Cave & use that full bath when the occupant of Merlins Man/Woman Cave give you the okay. It's not 3 stories away - just pop down to the first floor make a right & follow the tiled stairs to a tiled shower large enough for an entire family to take a shower in at the same time. Lol.
We've never actually had anyone have serious inconvenienced with the layout of the upgraded tile bathrooms. No one has to wait to use the loo or wash their face, put makeup on, brush their teeth. There is also a 1/2 bath on the first floor. Yes, we are planning on adding an additional shower to the 2nd floor possibly the 3rd fl but don't expect that until 2023. It will be advertised. It's a very workable situation for such a gem of a home. Thank-you Amy for all of the compliments. It was a pleasure to host you. My main question is: does your husband have any single dish-washing brothers for my single girlfriend?

Disliked: Listing accuracy
Disappointed
Stayed 4 nights. Expected much more for $$$.
1. heat wasn't turned on before arrival. 55°F in the house. Took 4 hours to finally heat up.
2. Listing is misleading. References multiple fireplaces, a Keurig, firepit, and outdoor furniture. Can't use the fireplaces (safety issue, understandable, but should say in listing), you have to buy your own coffee for the Keurig, buy your own firewood for the fire pit, and the outdoor furniture didn't have any cushions, so they weren't usable.
For most people traveling, it doesn't make sense to go buy coffee pods and firewood for a few days. Most hosts would have some available.
3. The listing says there are 3 levels, and the Merlin's Man Cave is in the lower level, implying that bedroom is on the main floor. It's not, it's in the basement. One lady in our party does not do stairs well, so that was unfortunately misleading. Recommend to clarify on the listing.
4. The tower doesn't have a light switch on that level to turn off the lights. You have to turn on/off the lights at the bottom of the stairs, which is not helpful for walking up/down stairs and going to bed/waking up. There is also NO smoke detector for the tower room, making some of the ladies feel unsafe in the tower.
5. Host showed up at 10a.m. on check out day to set up the outside and garage for a party she was having later in the day. Check out is 11a.m! I've never had a host show up during a stay. Unprofessional
Host is nice, and we fit 7 ppl, but overall disappointed

So sorry you were disappointed and we wish you had simply texted us asking us about the outdoor cushion location and letting us know you had someone that would prefer a first floor sleeping option. The master bedroom futon could have been moved to the 400 square ft living rm. There is plenty of room for it. This review took us by surprise because we are experienced Super Hosts with mostly 5 star reviews. And... all communications with Lindsay were positive - she even thanked us for her stay and let us know at 8am she had left for the airport.
Coffee? To be clear this high quality home is a vacation rental and not a bed and breakfast. Expectations of providing coffee for a four day stay for 7 are surprising.
We provide a normal coffee pot, a keurig, and a French press we have never in 2.5 years had a guest expect that we would provide food or coffee. We do as a courtesy have multiple flavors of tea bags as well as some tea keurig cups and a keurig cup where you can load your own preferred coffee. The closest grocery store is a half mile away and many deliver within 30 min if you need any food, firewood, or other supplies.
Departure day - the 100% solar eclipse day- At 8am you texted us that you had left the premises for the airport and thanked us for your stay. You stated you were going for breakfast before your flight. We arrived at 10 ish to put a few items in the garage and left a few minutes later. Housekeeping arrived at 11 am and we came back at 1:10 pm to welcome Solar Eclipse guests. Whomever wrote this review labeled us as unprofessional after Lindsay (the person who booked) texted that they had vacated the property. There were no cars present either at 10:15 am or 11 am
Outdoor cushions: You arrived at the tail end of winter when we still keep our cushions conveniently located inside the garage. You were quite proficient at texting us asking how to work our dimmer switches & the remotes that turn on lights so we truly wish you had also sent a short text saying you wanted use of outdoor cushions. Help was a text away.
Safety: we have more smoke and carbon monoxide alarms than are legally required. Again wish you had expressed a concern. You texted asking if we provide firewood and also about extra paper towels but then later state there is an alleged missing smoke alarm? Why wait? Don't ever wait on safety.
FYI for future guests we actually have more smoke and co2 alarms than required and in places that aren't as visible to avoid any tampering. We also check our alarms twice a year at time change and have staff take videos pressing on the alarm proving it works. We keep extra batteries available in case a battery gets low. There are two fire extinguishers. Your safety is important to us.
Heat: when our heat is set to 55 it is 62 degrees upstairs - and even warmer on the second floor. It doesn't take long with steam heat to get super warm.
Stairs: All bedrooms require stairs. We do have a futon that can be placed in the living room for mobility challenged guests preferring to avoid stairs. Please let us know in advance if it is wanted.
Lighting: 3rd floor Tower as we call it has multiple options for lighting including lamps for both queen beds and for the desk. The overhead lights are a convenience and not a necessity and can be used based on personal preference.
We welcome feedback from guests and always ask that guests let us know when they need or want something "during" their stay so that we can help rather than complain about it after departure.
Still scratching our head about this review since a note one of your fellow guests wrote in our guest book was positive. We so wish you had communicated more during your stay.
Ps. Merlin's Cave is not gender specific it's more like a suite since it has a brand new giant walk in tiled shower next to it. The bath is so large that the shower alone is 4x6 ft approx Most guests love Merlin's Cave because it's so quiet and private.
The room next to it has a second mini kitchen with fridge, another keurig, microwave, a table
( stainless steel with a table cloth on top)
this room also has a full size dishwasher & sink. So sorry you felt disappointed and prices were higher due to it being Easter week, the Fab Four Basketball & the Solar Eclipse: If you had stayed in town we would have also welcomed you to the once in a lifetime Solar Eclipse Watch gathering.
Come back again during non-peak less pricey times and even summer or fall when we leave our cushions out 24/7. We hope to even give future guests access to the gorgeous stone fireplace in the garage once we have reinvented the space and make it less of storage and more of a bonus space. (Note: we don't give access for car parking inside the garage since there is a large concrete parking area plus a gravel area. We just ask that guests "not" park on our lawn. )
We had a great time staying the castle. Each room has distinct character, the yard is dynamite and we were no more than 20 minutes from every Cleveland location we wanted to visit.
Don’t miss the opportunity to stay in a real castle; featuring all the charm of the 1920s with the amenities of the modern area. The owner is a pleasure to work with, and made our stay wonderful. We had a 1920s themed dinner party, and the castle was a character herself. Treat yourself to a luxurious stay, you won’t be sorry!
This is an amazing property. This home has plenty character and space. We loved everything about this home. The host was phenomenal, she made sure I knew where to find great food as well groceries in the area. It’s cozy and family friendly. I look forward to staying here again during my future visits to the Cleveland area.

About the host
Hosted by Elaine
As a nurse & performer with the harp I committed to providing my guests with lodging that is above and beyond just a place to stay. Myself and my team are delighted to make our homes ready for your time away. We sit in each chair and experience each room & ask ourselves what our guests might want. Meeting & greeting you and seeing your expressions of happiness in your home away from home is what drives us to excel. I know that my housekeepers, gardeners and other support staff take pride in our properties because they are special. Each is unique in their own way. An ocean view, at the edge of a park, wild-life, local art, flowers, comfy beds, usb ports for your devices, quality linens and real china to use. We bring you options for your type of retreat. 2022 is even bringing a butterfly sanctuary. Stay tuned on that. Do you want a personal caterer? chamber music? a baby sitter? dog-walker? Massage therapy? We know how to pull rabbits out of hats for our guests. Our LLC ends with the initials DBWJ = Doing Business With Joy. Are we going to hit every single mark every time? We hope so but remember this is a restored century home and sometimes in any home, things show up to be managed. We promise to do our very best to get a team member here to take care of any issue promptly. Just text us so we can respond quickly.
Why they chose this property
This property chose us. It's fondly known as the Castle because it was designed to look like one but be a home. The setting is amazing on 3/4 acre adjacent to the magnificent Emerald Necklace Parks. The Big Creek Parkway. One of our friends said it looks like Yellowstone in the back yard. A wild buck and his family visit daily. The giant trees especially the huge white sycamore in the back yard are wonderful to wake up to. This home/estate is close to everything but set most privately with neighbors only on one side. Downtown Cleveland and Cleveland Clinic is only 20 min away. The airport 4 and 1/2 miles away. The architectural in this home will astound you. From the 5 ornate fireplaces to the crown molding it's art deco/art nouveau classiness will win you over. This is a light filled castle at all times of day. The stained and leaded glass windows speak volumes. Yet the kitchen is new and all bathrooms and bath are new tile done in a rich way.
What makes this property unique
Memorable views from each room. A Victorian Soaking Tub, and huge tile showers. Out door fire-pit by the river which we fondly call our castle moat. The park system is literally next door and the trails are kept clear even in winter for walking and hikes. You can rent a pavilion if you want but then you may never want to leave here. The french marble fireplace in the dining room is era Louis XV. The garage isn't used as a garage because it has a massive stone fireplace, perfect on a rainy day. We are planning a butterfly sanctuary this summer. Stay tuned and be a part of the garden renovations with English herbs and fabulous flowers. (Fires are only permitted in the outdoor fire pit. You can buy wood at any of the local grocery stores)
