About this property

Quiet get-away in Lush Tropical Setting- 5 min walk to snorkeling beach!

Experience spinner dolphins, sea turtles, hump-back whales (in winter), manta rays, amazing fish and coral reefs at pristine Kealakekua Bay, a protected marine sanctuary.

Enjoy glorious sunsets through the palm fronds from the lanai or walk a few steps to the bay for your photos.
At Manini beach find excellent snorkeling and small sandy pools for little children. We have a one-man kayak and a one-man SUP/kayak combo for our guest’s use and a good variety of snorkel gear in many sizes. The shady park with picnic tables will keep everyone happy for hours! Come back to the house and consider using the outdoor shower to rinse off sand and sea water, pick some fruit from the trees, then relax on the private, covered second story lanai.
This spacious and airy home sleeps seven comfortably with large screened windows, high ceilings and overhead fans in every room. The decor is laid back Hawaiian from days gone by. Walls are decorated with local artwork as well as art collected in the South Pacific in the 1960s and more recently the Cook Islands.

There is a desk and office chair in the nook off the living room. Feel free to use the 25” wide monitor, full size keyboard, mouse and docking station.

The master bedroom has a queen-size bed, newly remodeled private bath with a walk-in shower. An adjoining sleeping porch has a twin bed.
The hall bedroom ("hula room") has a queen-size bed and adjoining updated bath that also opens to the hall. The third bedroom ("bird room") has twin beds.
Prepare meals in the well equipped kitchen that includes a rice cooker, cast iron skillets, blender, coffee grinder and your choice of coffee makers. Sleep with the sound of the ocean in your ears and wake to the riotous songs of birds outside your window. Feed the birds each morning and enjoy the show while you sip your coffee.
The Bay and the village of Napo'opo'o are unlike any you will find in the islands. The area is a quiet village with no condos, hotels, stores, or crowds. All shopping and dining are located 4 miles up the hill in Captain Cook or in the other local villages of Kealakekua and Kainaliu Town. Coolers are available at the front door and in the downstairs laundry area to keep your food purchases fresh - including fish from the Sunday farmers market.
The yard is a forest of palms and fruit trees - including papaya, grapefruit, soursop, tangerine, lime, lemon, orange, star fruit, banana and mango. Feel free to help yourselves to the bounty. There is also a fruit and banana bread stand down the street.
Most rentals down at the bay have an additional rental unit and ours is no exception however the second unit has a permanent tenant. Karen has lived on the property for over 20 years in a small Ohana below the house. She has proven to be a wonderful local resource to our guests and is available for issues that may arise.
The house is located in an intimate neighborhood which most guests appreciate and enjoy, and we observe quiet time after 8:00 PM out of respect for our neighbors. Parties and events are not allowed. Rentals are for a minimum of 5 nights.
FRONT DOOR IS AT TOP OF FULL FLIGHT OF STAIRS.

We were totally happy with the house. We've stayed in this house a number of times and will book it again. It is well-supplied, comfortable, in a beautifully landscaped Bird feeder on porch with seed supplied. Books, clothesline, well-equipped kitchen, two bathrooms. In Napo'o'po'o Village on Kealakekua Bay.

Wonderful location if you like to be by the ocean as it is 2 blocks to Manini Beach and a few miles to Two Step. Home was furnished comfortably with all the amenities one would need. It was warm when we were there so the combination of ceiling fans and floor fans really helped. Washer/Dryer is a plus as is the dishwasher. Would definitely recommend for a family and if we come back with the kids will try to stay here again.

Duncans travel to Puuhonua Road

This home is so very comfortable, in the greenery, with ample room to spread out for all ages. The kitchen is very well appointed, the beds are comfy and the spacious lanai is lovely. We were four adults: grandparents and two children with parents. Lots of games and puzzles for kids, plentiful reading material for adults. Shopping is a 20 minute car ride away. Water only short walk away.Highly recommended especially for family group.

Our stay in Captain Cook.

We loved the house and its proximity to the ocean and snorkeling. It was also a terrific base for the two younger ones to bike the challenging roads around the area. It is such a gorgeous area. We would come again if the opportunity presented itself.

Great location and property!

Great communication, property as described and we would stay there again. We loved the screened windows with natural airflow and cool nights along with the sound of nature. The house had tons of extras like tp, shampoo, garbage bags, dish soap, beach gear, etc. and used the kayak and paddle boards several times. The 5 min walk to Manini beach and 5 min drive to Ke'Ei beach was nice. Thank you for a wonderful property and for the late checkout!!!

Beautiful Peaceful Home

We loved our time spent at this beautiful home with our two children. It was peaceful, clean and comfortable and had boogie boards and snorkel equipment for us to borrow during our stay. The owner was very responsive to our questions. We loved it here and can't wait to return. Our only suggestion is to bring ear plugs for the birds and some road noise.

Great Spot

The house was in an ideal location in a small, quiet community near the beach. The property manager was there to greet us when we arrived and answer any questions. There was a binder with plenty of great suggestions for things to do and places to eat. It really felt like a home away from home. It was nice to have an ice chest , beach towels etc to use while we were there and the kitchen had everything we needed. Do bring earplugs if croaking frogs bother you at night! We spent the week exploring the island and were so happy to have a beautiful spot to come home to every afternoon!

Welcoming and comfortable- great location for snorkelers

This is a wonderful house as long as you don't mind a screened but open-air house (we stayed in February when nights are cooler): high ceilings, wood paneling, generous multiple seating areas-- perfect for our two-household group. There was so much to do nearby we wished for a few more days to sit on the lanai and relax (or make lemon bars with fruit from the garden tree). The house is an 8 minute drive from the BEST snorkeling spot called Two-Step; two blocks from Kealakekua Bay kayak rental/launch; near Kona coffee plantation tours and tasting; and there is a good local supermarket at the top of the ridge. We would definitely stay here again.

The Very Best - Like a Treehouse Nestled in the Forest!

Truly a gem of a home. Open air, surrounded by trees, birds, the breeze. Gorgeous interior, wood, comfortable furniture, plenty of space for our family - grandma, grandpa, mom, dad, and 2 little ones. Kitchen stocked with all the amenities and we cooked quite a bit. Snorkeling gear of all sizes at the house. We had everything we wanted here and it was really wonderful. The area is incredible too - close to so many stunning beaches, small quiet community. We hope to come back again sometime soon and make a habit of it!

Just a wonderful place to stay!!

First, this property was as described in the listing. The accommodations were wonderful, and the location in the lush green hillside near the beach was fantastic. You do have open windows, and the frogs sing you to sleep at night and the birds wake you up with the sun, which we actually really enjoyed. One thing to note is that the sound is as described so if you are looking for complete silence, this isn't the place for you. The interior rooms are also not fully sound isolated from each other, which you should be aware of. We adjusted quickly and were happy to make the tradeoff to enjoy the Hawaiian oceanside. We did take advantage of the close Manini beach, which is a huge advantage of this property. It is close and beautiful. We used the snorkeling gear a few times, which is a bit of a mixed bag of quality and styles. There are some standard snorkels, and some full-face. We had some trouble fitting them to our faces, but were glad we had access to them to try out because our family had never snorkeled before. Whether you bring your own gear or use the stuff provided I highly recommend trying it out! We absolutely would stay here again. We had such a great time!

Manini beach/captain cook

When we arrived it was an extra warm day and very humid. First night was a little tough due to adjusting to the temperature. There is no air conditioning but the windows are all large screens with lots of fans around the house. What we liked the most is the feeling of being in a tropical vacation...like a Caribbean feel. Lots of trees... there is no resort feel... just nature at it's best. Neighbors are very friendly, manini beach and the bay had the best snorkeling that we went to on island. Few people, no crowds. You can kayak, snorkel, swim, paddleboard the bay. We drove up hill to the entrance of the hike to captain cook monument. Tough hike but it was great snorkeling in bay at captain cook monument. Did all our shopping at choicemart, which is up the hill. Ate at the coffee shack which is located up the hill, with great views of the bay. Had fresh papaya off tree on property and star fruit. House had snorkel gear, chairs, paddle board and kayak to use. House had games to play and a ukelele my son loved. Would love to stay again. Thanks Mel for a nice experience.

Native Hawaii

This was a great way to take in Hawaii’s natural beauty. We split our trip into 3 areas, Captain Cook being the first area to explore. Incredible snorkeling at 2 Step just minutes from the house which was very convenient bc you want to beat the crowds and get parking. We got there a little after 7:00 am and were the 3rd group. Kayaking in Kealakekua Bay is just a walk down the road from the house. We were fortunate to have many dolphins by our side during the excursion. Mel has all the water toys you need. And her list of suggested areas to visit are a must! Such as the non tourist locations in fact Honomalino Beach you walk to from Milolii Beach Park is amazing and a local family asked how we found out about this beach. Mel was very responsive when we had questions about recommendations. The house was plenty big for the 4 of us and could easily accommodate a bigger party. The Mangos and Star Fruit from the property were enjoyed daily. My boys said it reminded them of the Swiss Family Robinson! Couple of things to be aware of, if you’re a light sleeper bring ear plugs. The birds are amazing but they wake up and begin singing early. No a/c which seems common in this area. Many fans both ceiling and floor fans help keep it cool. The fresh fish from Choice Mart was delicious. We cooked it every night. Thanks Mel for sharing your home with us!

Real Hawaii!

Our party of 6 absolutely LOVED this place. Away from the resorts and touristy hotels, this house nestled in a jungle setting just up from the beach was everything we wanted in a vacation spot. Walk to the beach in 5 minutes! Manini is a super sweet beach park with great snorkeling, lots of shade if you need it and not at all crowded. We walked 6 minutes to rent double kayaks for an adventure across the bay to snorkel at Captain Cook Monument - super fun outing. A short drive down the road is THE BEST snorkeling we’ve experienced at Two Step. The town of Captain Cook had everything we needed. Farmers market on Wednesday’s is excellent! The local grocery store had everything we could ask for and when we didn’t want to cook, Shaka Tacoz and Black Rock pizza were great! The house had anything and everything we needed, and it felt very much like a home for our 12 day trip. Plenty of space for the 6 of us! I even used the yard for a few workout sessions - sprinklers came on and cooled me off unexpectedly, haha! Plenty of towels, extra sheets, lots of dishes and utensils, paper towels, toilet paper, soaps, etc etc. The house is stocked very thoughtfully. For our family of nature-obsessed teens and college kids, the birds, geckos, and frogs surrounding this property were like hitting the nature jackpot for them. My son took care of feeding “his” birds throughout our trip to make sure they kept coming around every day for photo ops, ha! We didn’t mind one bit that there was no AC - the fans do a good job of keeping things cooled off but we also enjoyed the feeling of being immersed in the warm tropical nature of Hawaii. The only criticism or suggestion I would offer is to have a king size bed in the master rather than a queen. But that’s really not a big deal at all, we were comfortable regardless! We hope to stay here again on our next trip to the Big Island. It is our favorite Hawaiian island!

"Almost-a-Treehouse at Manini Beach!" or "Hale Hana Hou takes the cake!"

We have had great success with all of our VRBO rentals through the years, but Hale Hana Hou was just spectacular! We spent the last half of February 2016 at Hale Hana Hou (party of 7 including our adult children and their spouses). The photographs are an accurate representation of the lovely appearance of the property, but they are not able to convey the tropical treehouse setting! Mel was prompt to respond to every question. Karen (who lives downstairs) was helpful but never intrusive (in fact, we hardly knew she was there!). The kitchen is well stocked (blender, rice cooker, crockpot, coffee grinder, among other items), and there are all kinds of beach goodies to borrow (towels, boogie boards, snorkels, fins, cooler, etc.). We started each morning with a cup of coffee and a walk to Manini Beach. We enjoyed chatting with Sandy and learning some of the history of the area. Following Mel's advice, we tried several restaurants in the area, but we also enjoyed cooking and grilling at home. The papaya trees and lemon trees were bearing fruit during our stay, and we made several pitchers of homemade lemonade along with a delicious lemon tart (recipes added to the guest book). I also followed another guest's advice and tried a POG and rum cocktail...yum! The guest books are a great source of info along with Mel's handy suggestions. We snorkeled Kealakekua Bay right from Manini Beach, and also enjoyed trips to 2-Step, Kua Bay (my son's favorite swimming beach), and Hapuna Beach (beautiful sandy beach and picnic areas with grills). We personally prefer the neighborhood feel of the Napo'opo'o area to the hustle and busyness of Alii Drive. We enjoyed our beach activities and sightseeing each day, but were thrilled to come home to Hale Hana Hou every afternoon/evening. There was plenty of room and privacy in the home, even with 7 adults. I also thoroughly enjoyed Mel's book collection in the family room (Hawaii history, wildlife guides, etc.) and the comfortable, "old-Hawaii" decor. And the birds...we kept the bird feeder filled and had daily entertainment from the java sparrows, saffron finches, and zebra doves. Hale Hana Hou was the perfect vacation home for our family. But don't take our word for it...go see for yourself!!

Just what I felt "old Hawaii" would be like. The house was extremely comfortable and very clean. Almost all of the house was without glass windows and only screens. You felt like you were living in a tree house. I kept expecting Tarzan to swing through the trees or Humphrey Bogart and Katherine Hepburn to walk out of a bedroom. Alas they didn't show. We quickly learned to turn off extra lights at night as that attracted gnats. No other bug problems though and the gnats didn't bother us. After all----it's nature. The info "booklet" the owner sends you (a copy is in a binder for you if you forget your copy) is VERY helpful. The banana bread is great and the two beaches that you can walk to are so authentic. Great snorkeling and swimming. Not having air conditioning was not an issue. Every room has a ceiling fan, including baths and each room has at least two column fans you can move around to suit your needs. The nights were cool requiring a blanket. If you're looking for a Hilton this is not for you. If you want something you probably can't get at home this is it.

This was our second stay! We loved it the first time and we had to come back. We loved it the second time too. Catherine’s home has been perfect for us for our stays in Hawaii. We love the openness of the home and the wonderful lanai. I will never get tired of listen to the birds while drinking coffee on the lanai. We cooked a few dinners at the home, and the kitchen had everything we needed and more - plenty of cookware, utensils, a good selection of spices - you name it. Both bathrooms are well stocked with shampo, conditioner, body wash, reef-friendly sunscreen, and lots of towels - beach towels too. We love the proximity to quiet beaches and snorkeling locations. There are also plenty of great restaurants and coffee shops a short drive away. We took our son to The Theatery (restaurant) for his 19th birthday. Amazing meal and wonderful service - a great view too.We hope to be back soon. Thank you so much for a great stay!

Perfect getaway!

We love this area, away from hotels and businesses so we can enjoy and take in the sights and sounds of nature. Such an easy walk to the ocean, snorkeling, kayaking, hanging in the park with amazing views. And it’s a short drive up the hill to stores and restaurants. Don’t miss the farmers market on Sunday and be sure to have breakfast or lunch while there. The house is clean, spacious, serene, open air, with sounds of birds and frogs. And so well stocked, kitchen and all.We loved our stay, and wished it was longer…

Having spent a couple of years in Hawaii as a child, I have felt a deep connection to the islands ever since. Yearly visits to see family have helped maintain this connection. I never get tired of visiting the Big Island, especially when the weather in Colorado is cold and snowy!

Why they chose this property

I have explored the Big Island for many years with an eye to buying the right property when the opportunity arose. This house felt like home the minute I stepped into it. It has the open, airy feel and relaxed vibe that our house in the islands had so many years ago.

What makes this property unique

This is a true get away, an escape from the hustle and bustle of town. The house is down a winding road with breathtaking views. The neighborhood is quiet and friendly with excellent access to snorkeling and kayaking in Kealakekua Bay. is only 4 miles from the Place of Refuge, a National Park and historic site.
At your leisure, stroll to Manini Beach to check out the surf, take a dip or sit and read in the shade. A slightly longer walk ends at sandy Ke'ei Beach.
After relaxing next to the shore, you could take a 15 minute drive up the hillside to the small towns of Captain Cook and Kealakekua - or continue on to Kona for restaurants, shopping and movie theaters.
The Sunday Farmer's Market in Captain Cook features fresh fish, island produce, local crafts and a variety of food stalls. Live music adds local flair. Be sure to do your grocery shopping while in town. The only business near the house is a fruit stand where you can also purchase banana bread.
End the day with another stroll to the beach, this time to watch the sun set into the waves off Manini Beach. Back home to grill up dinner and listen as the coqui frogs begin their nightly serenade.
