Based on reviews, guests' favorite things about their stays include the active wildlife, abundant nature with a walking trail onsite, stunning night skies, peaceful vibes, comfortable beds, creative local artwork, a well-stocked kitchen, multitude of seating & relaxing options, plentiful games. It's a kid and dog paradise. Quiet country atmosphere, helpful hosts, and thoughtful details! See our reviews.
There is a wood swing, many comfortable chairs and hammocks on the large wrap around deck to enjoy some relaxing porch sitting and the gravity chairs are perfect for taking in the magnificent night sky.
This is an entire house with its own entrances, garage, dedicated outdoor space and parking. The house and kitchen are fully stocked with everything from towels and shower essentials to baking ware and cooking supplies. We provide creamer, coffee beans, Keurig, teas, sugar, artificial sweetener, salt and pepper, and cooking oils. We try to keep ketchup and mustard stocked, but it is best to bring your own additional condiments.
A little convenience store in the garage is stocked with snacks, bacon, local Lyman Ranch beef, fresh homestead eggs and our own home baked cookies. Check the top of the stairs for art and fun merch for sale. Firewood next to the woodstove is also available for purchase.
Let us know if you need anything specific for your stay!
We (the owners) live in a separate dwelling on-site with our friendly dog, so we're nearby to assist with additional needs, information, or possible emergencies, but we give our guests their privacy and typically only interact if needed. However, our friendly pup Bean loves to make new friends and will likely greet you and visit during your stay. Sometimes we are away from the property entirely, but we will let you know.
Check out our social media to learn more about us, Timberwolf Homestead, our pup Bean, and the lodge @timberwolf_homestead and tag us during your stay! Timberwolf Homestead is our home next door to the rental unit and includes a terraced garden, beehive and chicken coop. You will hear Henry the rooster crowing sometimes.
AWD or 4-wheel drive is recommended during harsh weather conditions. A portion of the access is a steep dirt road.
The front door is up the stairs to the deck. Your door code is required to access (sent on date of arrival).
Take note that cell service is spotty in this area and only Wi-Fi calling from the house is reliable.
When you enter the foyer, you will find to your right a binder that is the physical house manual. it contains an additional list of Welcome Tips to ensure your stay is copacetic. It includes both priority instructions and recommendations about the property and the surrounding area. To have access to the app (Alladin) that opens the garage from outside, you will need to let the host know you want access and we will send an invite to the app via your already provided email on your profile, since VRBO does not allow the sharing of emails or additonal/sensitive contact information between host and guest.
Please also note that while the woodstove is open for use, Josh, the owner/manager, will have no problem assisting you in getting it started or putting the fire out as needed. Matches and starter kindling are provided but the wood fuel is for-sale-only.

ADVENTURES & LOCAL ATTRACTIONS:
Visit Tonto Natural Bridge (7 miles away) and plenty of other trails close by.
Water Wheel Falls (15 miles away) is our favorite easy to access water with gorgeous waterfalls and is great for kids.
If you are ready for a big hike, Bob Bear Trailhead (2.2 miles away) takes you to Fossil Springs and rewards you with beautiful cave of bright aqua blue water. It's 4 miles downhill to the water and 4 miles back up the hill to get out. Water and electrolytes are highly recommended.
The Strawberry strip is just 2 miles from the house. We highly recommend eating at Fossil Creek Farm, Pie Bar and getting the monster pizza at Momma Joes. Unwind and meet some Strawberry locals at Sportsman Chalet. They have cold beer, a great Bison burger, and the Wine-burger also comes highly recommended.
Pine Downtown is just 5.5 miles from the house and offers great options like THAT Brewery, Old County Burger, Old County Inn, and definitely check out the Pine-Strawberry Farmers market open on Friday, Saturday and Sunday. You can find our cookies freshly baked from Timberwolf Homestead there! The Pine Creek Lavender Farm is a lovely spot to visit as well. Ponderosa Market in Pine has a large selection of basic necessities, firewood, alcohol, and groceries.
Want to check out a bar in the woods?! Below the Rim Meadery is worth the trip! Be sure to approach from Houston Mesa Rd near Payson. Google can take you on a nearly impassable route through the forest roads.
It's a scenic 1-hour drive to Woods Canyon Lake, where you can rent a variety of watercraft and enjoy being out on the lake. We love to rent a canoe and explore the trails along the shore with our pup. Both Woods Canyon Lake and Willow Springs Lake are great for fishing or swimming off the shore.
Knoll Lake is known for having very clean and clear water. It is a longer, more adventurous trip on a dirt road, but it's one of our favorite spots.

About the host
Hosted by Josh
Our family, who manage the property together, are originally from New Jersey, Morris County, about 20 mins from NYC. We moved during peak-pandemic and settled in Northern Arizona. We love the high desert and the magnanimous scenery it brings on a daily basis, as well as the dry weather and calm. What is called Rim Country was an easy choice to land on with its "sea of trees" (Ponderosas) and its sprinkling of lovely small towns like Payson and the charming unincorporated communities like Pine and Strawberry. Strawberry was especially ideal for us in that the elevation and orientation, especially of our particular site, allow for a cooler, more temperate climate and a rather mixed variety of native flora. Wildlife is also a very rich element of the area, there being an impressive concentration of Elk, which seem to dominate the scene, though they share the forest with deer, bobcat, coyotes, bear, and mountain lion, as well as the free range cattle that occasionally veer off from the surrounding ranch land. The neighbors in Strawberry-Pine also bring diversity to the animal scene, maintaining space for horses, alpaca, llama, sheep, etc. We love hosting here because of the joy this property and area brings to the guests, whether they are a family trying to get away from the heat of Phoenix or avid hikers or sportsmen craving adventures.
Why they chose this property
The neighborhood, the community itself is a lovely microclimate, a valley, that allows for strips of mixed forest in a semi-arid high-desert just below the Mogollon Rim. There are pondo pines, junipers, oaks, walnuts, and willows as well as old fruit trees here. There is also diversity of bird life, Elk, and deer, and also the javelina. We also get skunk, racoons, mountain lion, coyotes, and bears, though rarely seen. This doesn't include the Blue Heeler named Bean who has staked her claim to the whole property here (haha). Strawberry has a definitive rural way of life with its roots in logging, giving a small town feel and a slow pace (Pine Time). At the same time, Payson and all of the box stores are only 20-25 minutes away. So, the area is not so remote that a fully stocked supply hub is not too far away. The house is fully updated with wifi, big TV (75"), modern kitchen, a game room sporting a pool table, ping pong table, dart board, and nintendo, but it is also positioned on a property that exudes Nature. You will have the option of indulging in those creature comforts you hold dear while preserving your privacy, as well as to get out, explore, and breathe the fresh air. You can come fully prepared with a week's worth of packed clothes or use the washer-dryer in the garage and a second washer-dryer (stacked) in the master bathroom. This home gives you the option of central AC and heating and/or the use of a woodstove for roasting marshmallows and making smores. In the back, under the terraces, there is a firepit near the hot tub with lounging, while the grill can be used right on the wrap-around deck. It is very common to wake up to Elk browsing outside your window (warm season).
What makes this property unique
Quiet, clean and off the beaten path, but still very close to Strawberry & Pine shopping and dining centers. Payson is only 20-25 minutes away. Abundance of games to play and wildlife to see, offering a country experience in a modern and comfortable home. Quick service. Well-stocked. Pet Friendly. Reasonable pricing.
