About this property
Secluded Durango Retreat
Enjoy the peace and quiet of five secluded acres five minutes north of Durango. Nestled 700 ft above town and a 5 minute drive away. The house has great views, total privacy, and access to many trails within a 15 minute drive.
There are large windows with tons of sunshine that look onto a little valley on the property. It would be equally good for a base camp away from noise and traffic or as an idyllic weekend retreat.
The house is a three bedroom with another finished room that has the laundry in the closet. One of the bedrooms is now an office with an optional full size bed that can be setup ahead of time if you prefer (see office and 3rd bedroom pictures). If you use it as a third bedroom the ‘dedicated’ part of the office goes away.
There’s a large cathedral ceilinged central living space that includes the kitchen, living room, and dining room. This has step out access to the 5 acre backyard. The neighborhood is very quiet for the most part.
The dirt road is not great and AWD is strongly recommended in the winter. Please read the directions I'll send. There are no turns so you can’t get lost but it’s easy to stop too soon and accidentally go to one of the neighbors.
I live here a good portion of the year. It is cleaned out for renters but you will notice it has things like lots living plants and my photography (mostly) on the walls.
There is a pullout/parking area on the right 150 ft past the driveway. Feel free to park extra vehicles or trailers there.

About the host
Your host
I grew up in Durango and love the area. I have a lot of local family and work in the community here for the local electric cooperative focusing on EV charging, batteries, smart grid's, rate design, and distributed energy resources.
Why they chose this property
Local artists lived in the straw bail house for almost the entire time since it was built. I house-sat for them over 15 ago as a poor undergrad and was taken with the place.
Then, coming up on two decades later, they were at the age when they no longer wanted to handle this road and the winters. I was lucky enough to be in a position to buy it. We had never spoken in the interim and they were as thrilled as I was after they recognized me at the final showing. Buying a dream house in Durango isn't easy and I remain very grateful for how it played out.

What makes this property unique
It's in a unique little spot tucked away above Durango. You can still get everywhere within a few minutes but you get to wake up to birdsong most mornings and go to bed with crickets instead of town noise.
It has great design with lots of south facing windows that share no sight lines with neighbors.
