Winter Adventures: Downhill skiing, cross-country skiing, snowshoeing, snowmobiling, ice skating, hockey AND Winter Carnivals are some of the wonders of winter. Nearby areas to explore: Gore Mountain (about 10 miles away), West Mountain, Oak Mountain, Whiteface Mountain, Hickory Ski Center, Garnet Hill, Coles Woods, North Warren Snowmobile Club, C&C snowmobile Tours, Dynamite Hill Ice Rink, and Adirondack Thunder Hockey are just a few in the area.
Winter Carnivals are in Lake George, Saranac Lake, and Brandt Lake (more will be announced once the final dates are set).

Spring/Summer/Fall fun and enjoyment. Hike the trails and mountains nearby, examine the abundance of flowers springing up in the spring and summer, view the beautiful colors of fall throughout the Adirondacks. I am always amazed each year by the wonderous colors each season has to offer - truly gorgeous!

For Golfers, Cronin's is the place to go (only about 5 miles away). It has a fantastic course and great food! We love their hot dogs! When making your reservation, tell John or Jim (the owners) that Ken and Sue sent you to them.

Starting in early Spring, Square Eddy Expeditions has white water rafting. Are you planning on attending a wedding at Friends Lake Inn? Then, staying at Hermanus is just down the road. Revolution Rail is your place if you love recumbent biking along the Hudson. Hermanus-on-the-Hudson is the place to be!

Hermanus is a private estate (25 acres) located on the Hudson River in Chestertown, NY, surrounded by nature. Hermanus has a unique history, so be sure to check out Hermanus' history on our website, www.hermanus-on-the-hudson.com.

The Adirondack-style second-floor Carriage House apartment boasts over 1500 sq. ft. and almost every amenity you desire. Upon entering your private entrance, you will be amazed at the living areas: an open living/dining/kitchen area with a wood-burning stone fireplace that reaches 16-18-foot ceilings.

At Hermanus, you may walk the many trails, sit in or by the river, fish, walk across the Hudson (when the water is low), snowshoe (not provided), or sit by the fire pits (two on-site). In addition, there are puzzles, games, internet Wi-Fi, and a 75" Smart TV.

Wish to dine in: the kitchen has almost everything from major to small appliances and baking supplies. Have your cup of coffee (k-pods or 12 cups) anytime during the day, a toaster, blender, or crockpot. Plenty of dishes, silverware, pots, pans, and knives make preparing meals easy. Ample cupboards and a large refrigerator offer plenty of storage. Paper and cleaning products are provided, including basic food supplies such as ketchup, relish, mayonnaise, spices, and sugar. If you forgot an item, ask!

The main bedroom has a king bed and a comfortable reading chair. The adjacent walk-in closet has plenty of hanging space, a washer/dryer, and a small safe for valuables.

The second bedroom has two twin beds and a closet. In addition, there is a small desk and a trundle bed in the "Crows Nest" (loft). This area overlooks the massive living/dining/kitchen area. The maximum sleeping capacity is 6. There is also a travel crib (Graco Pack 'n-Play Dome LX-Playard).

The private bath has double sinks and a walk-in shower. The caretakers share additional bathrooms: a half bath downstairs (through the heated garage) and a full bath (shower) in the heated workshop.

Chestertown is about 5 miles from restaurants, and an exquisite fine-dining restaurant is minutes away. Every town around Hermanus has its unique charm and plenty of activities year-round.

We only accept dogs. If your dog or dogs are over 25 lbs, please email us to let us know what breed your dogs are and their weight before booking. So far, we have had dogs up to 125 lbs.

Perfect stay for our families needs. Ground managers live on property and are very friendly and helpful! Their two dogs were very welcoming of our pup, who loved running free around the property. Hudson lake access and great view. Well equipped kitchen, large TV, and comfortable furniture. Recommend renting a boat from Yankee’s boat rental to explore Lake George (pet friendly) and short hike to Goose Pond for a lovely swim if you go to the Pharaohs lake wilderness area.

Beautiful, serene getaway along the Hudson

We could not have been happier or more comfortable in this spacious, yet cozy rental home. The property itself is so beautiful and peaceful. We used this as a home base for skiing at nearby (17 min away) Gore Mountain, and it was the perfect place to return to for an evening of relaxation by the fireplace. The hosts and property managers are lovely.

A Lovely Retreat

Our family loved our time here. It was exactly the quiet we were looking for, and centrally located for the sites we were wanting to visit- Lake Placid, the High Peaks and Lake George. The hosts were exceptional, offering restaurant and activity suggestions, and made us feel very welcome during our stay.

Everyone was so friendly. The area was beautiful with so much to do. The home was exceptionally cleaned and maintained. Not a single person in my group complained about anything. Would definitely recommend the place, and I hope to stay again at some point in the future. Thank you so much!

Fabulous

Weekend excursion for my 60th birthday. I have been wanting to visit the Adirondacks and what a beautiful place to explore. The estate is right on the Hudson River and the views are amazing. The caretakers are more than welcoming. Willing to share favorite restaurants and places to explore. My fur baby enjoyed playing with Ruby & Pearl. Thank you for a great long weekend!

A cut above!

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at the Hermanus Estate! The carriage house is EXCETIONALLY well appointed with high quality furnishings, supplies, and decor. It is obvious that great thought and care went into creating a great experience for guests. The grounds of the estate are magnificent for taking long walks and just relaxing and enjoying the view of the Hudson River. The hosts are friendly, welcoming, and so helpful in sharing their extensive knowledge of the area. The property is perfectly located for visiting the Adirondacks area and close to restaurants and services but is also a cozy, comfortable, quiet retreat to return to after explorations.

Great Fall Getaway

We celebrated our daughter's 30th birthday with our first trip to the Adirondacks. The Hermanus Estate was a perfect choice. The carriage house was immaculate and beautifully decorated. Beautiful bathroom, very comfortable beds and a well-equipped kitchen! Sue and John were very welcoming and accommodating; John set up a fire for us one evening. We enjoyed relaxing time along the river, combined with day trips to Lake George and other venues. Check out the Saturday farmer's market in Glen Falls! Effective wifi was useful for some work zoom meetings. Wonderful stay!

Beautiful Estate

My best friend, my son, and his girlfriend spent a wonderful time at this beautiful home. It’s absolutely gorgeous. The caretakers made us feel so welcome. We had many great conversations with them. Having the Hudson River at your view was so relaxing. Oh, and the stars at night! We felt like we could just reach up a grab one. There were so many we could see and so vivid. Thank you for sharing this magical place with us.

Perfect!

Hermanus on the Hudson was the perfect location for our weekend visit to the Adirondacks. Susan, Sue and John were very welcoming and John offered great tips for local eats. The location with sunset over the Hudson is stunning. The carriage house apartment is beautifully done (just like the online pictures) and has very comfortable beds, kitchen with everything you need and a spacious bathroom. Our dog, Elle, enjoyed her morning walks on the property. When we return to visit friends in the area, we will definitely book again. Thanks Susan and Ken for sharing your wonderful home.

Amazingly beautiful property

We spent the most restful, calming, and relaxing long weekend at this beautiful riverside property. Upon arrival we were immediately greeted by John who welcomed us and gave us a brief rundown of the property and let us know him and Sue would be there if we needed anything. The house had every ammenity you could possibly need. The views alone from the windows of the carriage house were incredible. Walking the property, whether in the wooded area or along the banks of the Hudson River provided beautiful scenery, perfect for a late summer/early fall mini vacation Thank you to Sue & Ken for their incredible hospitality and wonderful converstaion. We will most certainly be back. Ricky & Susan

Better than we could have expected!

We stayed at the property over Memorial Day weekend and are so sad to go! The property was even better than the pictures. The space is beautiful, everything is clean and new. Well stocked everything, Giant TV. There’s extra linens, well stocked kitchen, shampoo/conditioner/body wash in the bathroom, washer and dryer and plenty of storage space. Beds were comfortable. The caretakers Sue and John were beyond! They really went out of their way to make us feel comfortable and well cared for. Sue gave us excellent family friendly activities to do everyday - we would have never founds these gems on our own and kept going back to Lake George village and missed out on all the amazing things the Adirondacks have to offer! They set up fires for us in the fire pits for us every day, supplied us with whatever we needed for the day. We generally like to have our own private space without people on the property but they were not invasive at all! Just lovely, lovely people who are here to help. The river was fun to splash around in too. Such an added bonus! Speaking of added bonuses, our son became friends with their dog Ruby - such a sweet dog! We can’t wait to come back. Thank you for a super memorable weekend.

Absolutely Amazing

We arrived on a Thursday afternoon. We were greeted with smiles and best of all, dogs!! The caretakers of the property, John and Sue have 2 dogs. Ruby, a black lab that says Hello any chance she can. Pearl, a 9 week old yellow lab that does nothing but make you smile. We brought our dog, who played with them and enjoyed the property. The property itself is stunning. The river is calming and tranquil. The trails are extensive. Its private, away from main roads and very well maintained. The inside of the rental doesnt do the phros any justice. Its wide open, spotless, inviting, comfortable and has everything you may need. The TV could have been a little bigger (joking, its 75 inches) The beds and furniture are all comfortable. There is AC in each separate room and it worked great. John and Sue are incredible. They were so kind to take us fishing, on rides in the side by side, started fires for us down by the river any night we wanted. They are wonderful, very friendly people. They gave us an extensive, detailed list of places we could go for dinner. This place is special. We cant wait to come back. I cant imagine how beautiful it would be in the winter (only 14 miles to Gore). The fireplace is an absolute dream. We absolutely loved this place and would give it 5 stars. If you are need of service and have Verizon, good luck. The wifi is slightly spotty, but who needs it when you have a place like this to enjoy.

We absolutely loved our stay! As per the listing, it was private with riverfront views, hiking on the premises and a very comfortable home-away-from home! Our hosts were very friendly and helpful. They built fires outside for us in the evening to enjoy the outdoors including the riverfront and nature! They also recommended several places to visit and activities to do which we did - and thoroughly enjoyed all of them.We would love to return in the future!!! Great place! Great hosts!!!The only issue which turned out to be very minor was that the listing described two bathrooms in the unit (in addition to another bathroom in the garage). Actually, the unit only had one bathroom, but since there were only three of us in the unit, it was not an issue. The one time we needed a second bathroom, it was not a problem to use the facilities in the garage. This place was truly wonderful!!!

About the host

Hosted by Susan Farr

Host profile image
Hermanus Estate was given this name for one of the most beautiful places I have visited - Hermanus, South Africa, where the water and views were breathtaking. I, Ken Hopper, have resided on this property since 1998 and thoroughly enjoy every minute. His wife, Susan, joined him in 2013. The Caretakers, John and Sue, have resided here for over 14 years; if you have any questions, please contact them. They reside on the other side of the Carriage House apartment.

Before Hermanus, the property was called "No Kaire." The previous owners, Jay and Gay Mahoney loved and developed this property into its present style. Both loved the Asian culture as depicted. Even the main house is shaped like a bird, like a typical Japanese summer home. As you walk along the pathways, you will find a huge koi pond with a waterfall; however, the pond is currently not working (under repairs). The Asian culture is depicted in the Carriage House, where you will stay.

Being a host brings joy to the caretakers and the owners, as each family who stays with us is unique and special. We learn from each other. It is a joy to learn!

We accept dogs only. If your dog or dogs are over 20 lbs, please email us to let us know what type of breed your dog is and its weight prior to your booking. So far, we have had dogs up to 125 lbs.

Why they chose this property

Hermanus is in the center of year-round activities: Gore Mountain, Chestertown, North Creek, Friends Lake, Schroon Lake, Loon Lake, Adirondacks, Americade, World University Games, FISU, Bolton Landing, and Warrensburg is the host to the World's Largest Garage Sale. You may be as busy as you wish with activities or you can relax with nature. It is all up to you! An abundance of activities awaits you: skiing, rafting, biking, hiking the High Peaks, water skiing, snowmobiling, boating, etc.

On the property:
- Screened Gazebo by the stone wall.
- Small fire pit, "Overlook," the river and mountains - mid-way down the scenic driveway.
- By the river, an enormous fire pit with the ability to go swimming or walk across the Hudson River.
- Heated ski storage.
- Walking/Hiking paths on the 25 acres or along the pathways onto the adjacent property, where you will see deer, bears, and other animals.

Each season has its characteristics, such as gardens in the spring and summer, fall foliage, ice flows in the winter, and multiple walking pathways throughout the year. Bring your snowshoes! In the summer, sit and relax by or in the private waters of the Hudson River or visit a productive nearby fishing hole.

What makes this property unique

Picturesque, peaceful, and relaxing in nature, we pride ourselves on cleanliness.

We are centrally located between Saratoga Springs and Lake Placid, 14 miles from Lake George or Gore Mountain.

Hermanus has a fantastic history, and the estate is near so many adventurous wonders that your spirit may wish for or desire. Take a day trip to Lake Placid or Saratoga Springs. You never know where the next page will turn, and you may want to return to Hermanus season after season to view the wonders of nature and be venturesome or sit by the fire and read an excellent novel.
