We loved Locavore!
We enjoyed the cottage for two perfect days and nights on Mother's Day weekend with the bonus of a farm-to-table dinner and lovely music in the pasture under a beautiful clear sky. There is magic happening on this idyllic family farm: 1. Sunset began with a golden glow and lasted a full three hours. I credit the 360-degree horizon and big sky. 2. Were the roosters respectful with crowing times or were we oblivious to their crows because we were having the purest sleep? 3. Breakfast was harvested all within fifty feet of our door; eggs from the chicken coop and spinach, tarragon and green garlic from the garden. All six of us ate at table together with the front door open to the view of sunshine on the golden pasture. All was made possible by a delightful, welcoming host family and their charming farmyard animals. We wholeheartedly recommend a visit to Locavore Farm to enjoy the company of the human, donkey, cow, pig, chicken, sheep, doggie and kitty residents, and to be inspired by an education on regenerative farming and permaculture food production. Visit, relax, slow down, and feel true peaceful connection.

Delightful weekend stay
This farmstay is a delight: the owners are welcoming and very warm, keen to make you comfortable and relaxed in enjoying their property. Wonderful, imaginative, fresh food was served as well as happy times walking the property and visiting with the animals. Owners are working hard - and effectively - on a regenerative program of husbandry and generation of food that us of the film “Best Little Farm”. Truly “Best” farm stay in Illinois! Location is great for Quilt Barn tours and Kankakee Riverfront as well.

Picture Perfect
The cottage was absolutely perfect down to every last detail. It's appropriately furnished in what I would call upscale farmhouse style. Everything is done with good taste, creativity and style. It's new and clean, with every amenity you can think of provided to you.

Compelled to leave the comforts of suburban living, we wanted to actively participate in the quality and availability of our food. We were also hungry for community. A true experience of community, shaped by experiences common to all. We wanted to engage with our neighbors in very authentic and practical ways. Urban living made us super independent - isolated. As we looked for examples of communal living, we saw numerous examples in rural settings. We knew that ‘place’ for us would be a rural setting where land is vast and ideal for growing food and where the farming community would serve as a guide on how to connect and collaborate. So, we set out to find a home in the country for our soon to be beginner-farmer family of six.

Our journey led us 43-miles south of downtown Chicago to Grant Park, IL in Kankakee County - a farming community with fewer people than acreage. We knew that our lifestyle would be different from those moving to the country to get away. We would be moving to the country to collaborate and commune, inviting others to join us in the nurturing and sharing of food. Our place would be bustling within the quiet landscape of rural living and would interrupt the practices of conventional farming with a climate-friendly approach to agriculture.

— Christopher & Rachael Jones

The Jones family manages every step in the journey from plant to plate and the entire operation and marketing strategy involves celebrating the labor of farming, gathered around a table with 100 guests. To date, approximately 10,000 people have dined at Locavore Farm. Over 65% coming from downtown Chicago, and the remaining from Northwest Indiana and surrounding Chicago suburbs, including tourists that have heard about Locavore from the Illinois Tourism Bureau who has featured the Dine on the Land experience as one of Illinois most unique, must-do, experiences for visitors.

Why they chose this property

In 2022, the Jones family realized a long-time dream since opening Locavore Farm by purchasing a 30-acre estate just 2.2 miles down County Line Road. The name of the new farmture (farm-adventure) is Sumac Creek Farms and will host all the Dine on the Land events and educational experiences as well as overnight retreats, glamping, and extended farmstays in a historic farm cottage.

We seek to transform our conventional farm into a carbon-guzzling oasis. We have returned to the roots and traditions of early - at times even primitive - agriculture! We are climate-farming, putting in more than we take out in an effort to leave a sustainable operation for generations to come.

We will recontour the land, resulting in berms and swales that provide water and nutrients to the soil and plant roots from the ground up. Stratified planting, companion planting and diversification of plant species, replaces the system of monoculture. Trees, trees and more trees planted will protect soil from erosion, drive nutrients through the soil and into vegetation as well as break up soil to improve irrigation. We will build up our soil by using livestock and green manures, resulting in nutrient-dense food for our local food system.

We are good stewards of our land because we love the people who depend on earth’s planetary resources to live…. That is why our desire is to restore the connection of people, one to another. Every gathering at Sumac Creek Farms will deliver an experience that positively impacts how food is nurtured and shared.

What makes this property unique

The farm cottage is completely remodeled, yet still holds its historic charm. The Cottage has its own vegetable gardens, herbs, and chicken coop for guests to enjoy, as well as fire pit. The cottage sits within Locavore's Agrarian Center which hosts farm dinner events and more.
