A cozy little cottage with great light set in a beautiful, old, safe neighborhood with plenty of privacy. Easy walk into town; grab lunch, dinner just down the road, coffee, shop or just discover all the hidden treasures this town offers. A ten mile drive to the historic Peaks of Otter, visit the D Day Memorial, Poplar Forest or walk to the Wharton Gardens which is only five minutes away. Unwind. Stay in this fully furnished cottage replete with a kitchen, dryer, AC and no screens. Regarding internet/wifi, this is a comment from a recent guest: Just FYI, for any future guests who ask, Verizon has superb coverage here and in tech speak, I can download at 20MB/second on my Verizon hotspot. Meaning, my phone’s coverage extends to all my devices (computers, tablets, etc.) and that speed I gave you is a real number pulled from a Speedtest. As a basis for comparison, 10MB/s is the bare minimum to (for example) stream a 4K movie. So 20 is a WHOLE lot better than I expected--Towels and linens upon request.

This was one of the nicest places I have stayed! So clean so convenient and Helen could not have been nicer or more responsive!
Would definitely go again to recharge!

It was our pleasure to host you and your son, please do return anytime. You were a delight. Thank you.
This was exactly as advertised. My son and I enjoyed every minute of our stay here. The sunset over the mountains from the porch and living room as we fell asleep was priceless. Also a short drive to Natural Bridge. Loved it and will return!
Location and the cottage we're as hoped. A bit disappointed in the amenities like no can opener. Also infested with ants, but overall we loved the area and plan on returning.
This was my second time renting from Mrs. Maxwell. She is very prompt in answering any questions and everything is always clean and as described. I come to Bedford for work once a year and will always choose her properties for rent over staying at a hotel.

Bedford cottage
Musty smell throughout the property during the two days we stayed. Need a tv!!!! Need better mattress!!!!
Just loved this adorable little home. It was perfect for me and my senior mom. She uses a walker, so there was only one small step up to get inside, which was no problem. There was a shower stall with a low lip so that worked out also for her. The bed was the right height for her to get in on her own. Some homes the beds are so tall she can't get up on it! Helen was a wonderful host and we loved the way she decorated the home. It had all we needed. The location was close to everything but at the same time we felt like we were in a park all to ourselves. So many deer and fawns. Just delightful.

If every guest were as kind, considerate, caring and clean as Elaine, the world would be a better place. If you ever get the pleasure of hosting Elaine, do not hesitate, she is the best of the best. Thank you Elaine for restoring my faith in human kind. I wish you and your Mom the very best, always.
My friend and I greatly enjoyed our stay at the cottage. It's perfect for a peaceful, quiet retreat to read and write. The yard was perfect for enjoying a little nature. The neighborhood was adorable and lovely for walks. I do recommend bringing a couple floor fans for the bedrooms. We did which made the bedrooms perfect. The cottage has an AC window unit in the living room which does a great job for the rest of the cottage, but the rooms were a little hot seeing as our trip was mid-August. Our host was wonderfully accommodating of some travel glitches we had to our arrival time. Check-out was very simple too. Some places have a huge list of things to do before check-out, but our host didn't which was very helpful as we had to leave at the crack of dawn. I hope to come again.

Charis, you were the perfect guests. Thank you for staying at our cottage, we welcome your return anytime and I would recommend you to any host. Best always to you and yours.
We really enjoyed our stay. The cottage was clean, cozy, and perfect for a weekend getaway. The bed is a queen in one room and a twin in another. Plenty of storage. We had clean sheets and towels ready for us. The bathroom has a stand in shower with good water pressure. The shower is a little dark but doable. The town of Bedford is charming. We enjoyed our walks through town. The best part is this place is close to the Blue Ridge Parkway. We hiked Sharp Mountain and the view was phenomenal. We had a chance to unplug and enjoy sitting on the porch watching the deer and a rowdy gopher we named Charlie. The only thing I have to complain about is the squirrels throwing walnuts on our car, lol. No TV was not a concern for us but might be for others. The kitchen was the right size with all the amenities. Bring your own coffee for a standard pot! Thank you for allowing us to enjoy the cottage and the town of Bedford!!!!
We stayed at the cottage and host was easily reachable and replied quickly. The listing pictures are a little deceiving. No curtain for privacy in bathroom. No TV or internet but that was my fault for not paying attention to details. Beds slept good but several things don’t work such a washing machine, small fan in bedroom, overhead light in main room, etc. It has a small AC window unit but thankfully it was only 85. degrees. The home is a very old home that has a distinct old smell. The shower is very unique and was very surprising. I would’ve felt better if I’d only paid $50 per night instead of the $88 we paid.
My son and I visited Bedford for a disc golf tournament. We arrived at the cottage in the evening when it was dark, and it was a little hard to find the driveway. There are no street lights when you drive down the one lane gravel lane, the driveway was easy for us to miss twice. But after we arrived and turned on the porch light, we had no future problems. It was easy to get to once we had been there!!
The cottage was conveniently located in town, but in a very private location with a large, tranquil yard all around. The cottage was as advertised, with a fully functioning kitchen., 2 bedrooms, bathroom, and sitting area. The linen and towels were clean and fresh. Others had mentioned good cell service, but it was a little spotty for us. Overall, you can’t beat the location and the value and we wouldn’t hesitate to stay again.
Very convenient location for the family and sites we wanted to see. Perfect size for two siblings. Just wish washer had not been down for repairs and that the dryer was a little speedier. Place was so clean, which is a bit of a priority for us, we felt comfortable handwashing our clothes instead.
I loved the feel of this charming and beautifully cared for cottage. The host was amazing and helpful when I needed it. We were very comfy and it was my best experience staying in Bedford ever and I’ve been there quite a few times at other places.
Watching the deer, squirrels, birds & groundhogs out in the yard was so fun and peaceful. Immediately I appreciated the mature and sprawling magnolia trees when you pull up.
The only thing was the shower was really dark and the floor could use some updating. I’m used to camping a lot though so I just used some shower shoes and hoped for the best. Other than that it was absolutely perfect and I loved my experience there so much. I will reserve this again if it’s available when I return.
Peaceful place but still within walking distance to town. Enjoyed watching the deer in the yard every morning. House was clean and well renovated, only downside is that the shower needs some work.
Mid-Century Modern Oasis in a Historic Southern Town
The hostess, Helen, is on her game - prompt responses and professional to a tee! Thank you!
Shower stall surround and shower floor needs updating. We sponge bathed. The shower head is beautiful, yet we weren’t comfortable with the dark shower and curtain to use it. Also due to the lovely private area the cottage sits on, ALL windows needed curtains. I’m a city girl afraid of the dark and need insurance no one is peeping in!
Sleeping nightly was a dream, beds are comfortable and extra box fans kept the air conditioned air circulating comfortably!! The local large family of deer were entertainment daily and Azul Mexican down the street was tops! This little place has many special features if you are looking for a relaxing, quiet getaway!
Despite my mentions, we would stay here again! Thank you!
